i think i am finally at a point where I can start making slipjoint pocketknives regularly. these last couple weeks ive been locked in the shop practicing and made some very nice improvements in the repeatability, and efficiency that I can make them. and made some cool knives in the process :} caltoncutlery.com

Loved the video! That was refreshingly humble. I particularly liked the spear point (not everybody is skinning muskrats), the half stop (which reminds you "Get your thumb out of the way when closing") and the fact that you talked about what ordinary people use pocket knives for....cleaning fingernails, ripping bags open, etc. I also agree with your point about the size of the knife in the front pocket....my way of dealing with it is belt sheaths. I don't like pocket clips....I've seen too many people lose knives when they are working in the bushes...the bushes can catch the clip and, if you don't have scales that are yellow, orange, etc. The knife is gone! That gets us back to my suggestion about a belt sheath. I have a joke about it that you are welcome to repeat: I tell people, "If you are thinking about sticking a 4" knife in your front pocket, for one, you are going to wear out the pocket; for another, the ladies are going to wonder what you've got on your mind and why you're built kinda wierd!" Those are great knives, Joe....keep machining!

thanks! sometimes it seems like it takes a TON of practice before things start looking the way I want them to. I just made a belt sheath for a fella that wanted to carry one of my slipjoints on his belt, very similar to the buck 110 leather pouch sheaths. yes a 4" folder without a slip or pocket clip is alot in a front jeans pocket. something like the cargo pocket on shorts is not so bad, or a coat pocket or something so the ladies dont get the wrong idea :}

id be interested in one. a couple different steels that you usually mess with along with the different bone, wood, etc would really bring some business also too.

It’s so hard to make a pocketknife your 100 proud of.

yes it is way tougher than fixed blades so far, but ill bet after another couple hundred slipjoints, ill think they are easier. some of those you have been turning out have been really nice!

@@JBCaudillKnives when I first started out making hunters, a forged 4" hunter with a handsanded finish, a guard, partial tang, and leather sheath had about 40 hours or more into each one. i dont think I have 10 hours into a similar one now, and they are much better quality for much less time. while I dont count the minutes all that much, i do get more efficient the more I make.

Lots of respect Joe. Thanks for sharing. I need to stop buying so many stones and save up to buy one of your knives. If and when I do decide to buy one you're definitely on my list. Appreciate what you do Joe thanks again!

Ever thought of slapping a pocket clip on them. Takes care of the rotation problem
