It's a popular misconception (we believe) that in order to run faster, you need to slow down. There is some truth in this theory but not enough to lead with this thought process. Coach Diaz and elite Marathon runner and coach Blue Benadum visits this theory and offers their opinion.

I needed to hear this, I bought in to the whole MAF approach and while amazing for my base it did not make me faster. This year I have taken a totally different approach and have seen the results and it feels good that you guys have confirmed it

Can't wait to read the book, sounds like it ties in neatly with th Ingebritsen training and the Klaas Lok easy intervals which I follow formy training.

At last. At last. I thought the world was bereft of anyone that knows all about how to run. I have watched this and the other videos and I am in total syncronicity. I am in total agreement with this training philosophy and the form instruction in the other videos.

You need to run slow to be able to recover so you can run fast on the hard days. 🤡

i love my treadmill for warmups, and for tempo, then i love to go apply that tempo outdoors, but the tread keeps me accountable to the numbers, and i have to "tap out" or hit the "slow down" buttons to get me out of the pain cave, and i like and need that accountability when forcing myself to go deep into the cave. I also need the freedom to do whatever my body wants tomorrow, i dont know what i'll be doing, but my body and energy levels will tell me, and right now my body is reaching for some trails in this rain, so thats what I'm going to give it

The MAF approach is designed for ultra runners imo. It's a great way to develop your base cardio, but you need to develop endurance in speed and vo2 max as well. Running slow to get fast applies to everyone who doesn't have a base or who only needs base. Long runs 2-2,5h zone 2, some treshold runs and some interval training and maybe a mid-week semi long run of 1-1,5h of zone 2-3 should cover it.

Hi and thank you for the information and interviews you provide. You mention physics in this interview. Can you expand on your views on the physics of running? Or do you have a previous talk about this?

Forces from gravity, inertia from opposing posture, associated braking forces as a result of the aforementioned are numbered as physics.

If I want to run faster I must run faster and harder. I do tempos, track, speed work etc. but I’m a star to run later in life 40’s I done few marathons 3.15.21 is my fastest time however I find it harder to do a 10k or 5k fast. Is this area that I’m forgetting about it?

I run 5 minute miles only training in zone 1. Explain that one.

So the ONLY thing you do is train zone 1? How tall are you, what do you weight? How much volume per week for how long, do you strength train? Finally, do you really think that low intensity training is the solution to running faster?

@@diazhp sorry, Mr. Diaz. My comment was pure sarcasm. No… I do not believe in the whole running slow to run fast fad. Since I made a rather rash, sarcastic comment, that wasn’t really that funny I will go ahead and answer your questions. I am 5 feet, 7 inches tall and I weigh 155 pounds iRun approximately 60 to 70 miles per week. I actually do a considerable amount of strength training. I can do a weighted chin up of 115 extra pounds for 3 reps that I can easily prove. Full stretch of oats at bottom…chin clearing bar. Controlled no Kip. I have video of this. The zone 2 is BS. I believe in aerobic training but the only way to learn to run fast is through speed work.

I appreciate you Frank! I had a feeling there may have been a bit of levity behind your claim. Sounds like you're putting in some solid work! @@Frank-cw2xy

Never believed any MAF stuff. on Fancy Wind-HOff techniques. LMAO.. makes me "LAFF". Just believed in HARD Work = Strength and Speed. Not RUNNING SLOW. Unless you want to build up a ton of miles.

this is not a much needed conversation. unfortunately, slow down to run fast is still more relevant.
