Thanks for the great break down and info. One set of heads that don’t hear much about is the 64 cc swirl port 1.94 heads, casting 10110810 GM put them on some 90’s 350 TBI engines not just the 1.84 305’s. These are not as heavily swirl ported as the others. I have a set paired with a TPI EFI. With a little work they flow pretty good for cheap heads and a great torque monster with the high torque TPI system.

@@ezekielmoorejr3145castings where used in both 305/350. If they are installed on 350 then yes 1.94 if on 305 then 1.84. Best way to check is to measure with heads off, if not off another way to tell is supposedly the 350 casting is vertical to the sides of the cylinder head as mine are.

@@joedirt3472 thanks for the info! I'll have to check the next time I pull the heads which will be soon, because of a broken exhaust bolt at the back of the head (broke flush with the surface). The casting # starts on the intake side and ends on exhaust side and there was one other # (L153). Thanks again!

@@joedirt3472810s were never used on the pre-vortec center bolt valve cover 305s from the factory atleast. It was either 187 or 081. 187 was a swirl port, 081 was basically an updated 416 that flowed a little better and had a better chamber with a more centralized spark plug 810 head was only used on the 8600+ GVW 350s. The 810s have larger valve guides for the 3/8" stem valves, stainless incol valves and valve rotators on both intake and exhaust.

the Vortec heads are the best flowing production SBC head out there, the problem is that they don't take big cam lift. you are limited to about .420 lift without extensive work. and even then you are still limited to around .480 lift. as for the Double Hump / Camel Hump heads go, the Vortech head out flows them by about 20CFM on both intake and exhaust. until you get over .480 lift then the Hump Heads win, but only because of more valve lift. there are actually 5 different version of the Hump Heads, casting 461, 461X, 462, 291, and lastly the 186 heads. all are identical with the exception of the 461X and 186 heads. the 461X had bigger intake runners than the 461. other than that it is identical to the 461, 462, and 291 heads. all had 1.94 and 1.50 intake valves, except the 186 head used on the 302 DZ engines and 350 LT1 engines. one thing to note about the 461,461X,462 and 291 heads is that they do not have accessory bracket holes on the ends of the heads, so they won't work on cars past 69 without swapping to the short water pump and using the brackets for a short water pump. the 186 head has the accessory holes in the ends and it also got 2.02 and 1.60 valves. it will work with both the short or long water pumps, but the brackets have to match the pump type, short pump brackets for the short pump and long pump brackets for the long pump. the 186 heads are by far the best of all the double hump heads, but they are highly sought after for people restoring Z28 Camaros and LT1 Corvettes. they currently go for around 1600 a pair for a core that will need to be rebuilt. the last time I had heads rebuilt with new guide, new seats, bake, cleaned, and assembled with new good quality valves, it was $800 at the machine shop. so your looking at $2400 for a set of 186 heads said and done. and even then, the vortec is better down low. also any aftermarket aluminum head is better than the vortec. and you can run more compression with an aluminum head vs an iron head. for me, the vortec head is only useful if you're building a marine engine, lake and sea water a destroys aluminum heads on no time flat. the cheap route is a set of generic chinese aluminum heads from Ebay. they are a clone of the older Dart Pro 1. there an as cast heads and they flow very good right out of the box. and run around $200 each on ebay bare and unassembled. add good valves, springs, seals, lock retainers, studs and guide places and you're looking around 650 for a pair if you shop around for deals on the parts to assemble them. if my budget was tight, then this is the best bang for the buck. the second way to go is the new TrickFlow new aluminum Camel Hump heads. they are identical to the old camel humps except made from aluminum. and come fully assembled. TFS-30210006 is a clone of the 186 head and has hole drilled for brackets. TFS-30210002 is a clone of the 461x head. they flow about 30cfm more than the iron vortec head. they also have modern chambers, and runners, along with thicker decks to prevent cracking and allow for milling to increase compression. they run around $1400 a pair fully assembled and ready to bolt on. if i was looking at double hump heads, and had a modest budget, this is the way i would go. TrickFlow makes very good heads. I have never heard anyone complain about them.

ALL ARE GREAT HEADS FOR A DAILY DRIVER BUILD.
@chrisreynolds6520
@chrisreynolds6520 27 күн бұрын
For a daily driver, I would throw the 624s in the scrap bin, get a free or almost free pair of 191, 193 or 810s and enjoy the added fuel mileage, added torque and added horsepower. The TBI 350s were up a solid 40 hp over those mid 70s to mid 80s smog era 350s and the only real difference was the cylinder heads. Same piston design, same camshaft, the 193 was just that much better with it smaller chamber and fast burn high swirl design. The swirl port heads make peak HP at about 26-29* of total advance. I built a flat top piston 355 with a set of 193s that had a spring upgrade, 10.25 static compression, used a ZZ3 camshaft, used the Bowtie 242 Q-Jet intake, an 850 cfm Q-Jet and Thorley Tri-Ys. It made 340 hp and 410 ft/lbs on 87 octane and pulled a 5,300 lbs van around very nicely with a 700r4 and 3.08 gear. It ran mid 14s at 94 mph in the 1/4 and would still get 20-21 mpg with the ac blasting and the cruise set at 75 mph on long trips. The swirl ports also work fantastically on a 400 small block. Built a 406 to replace a 350 TBI. The 810 heads off the 350, 9:1 compression, Crane 260 cam, Edelbrock 3704 manifold bored to 2" throttle openings, 350 marine 2" TBI unit, and 2.5" outlet Hooker manifolds. That went into a 1995 G-30 cutaway class C motorhome with a 4L80E and 4.10 gear. It pulled a 4,000 lbs boat with ease. With the 350 it was foot on the floor in 2nd gear at 40-50 mph climbing a ~6% grade. With the 406 it was 3rd or even 4th gear at times and as fast you wanted to run. I ran it up Rutan pass at 65 mph nearly effortlessly in 3rd gear.

Here's a long winded one but Imo when it comes to actual performance the smoggers are too much effort to get any decent amount of power out of obviously you can the circle track guys work wonders with em but it's there only option but the work it takes to equal a not very good performance head is to much BUT if someone stumbles onto a good condition set of 1.94/1.50 76cc smoggers there not worthless boat anchors as so many claim, they are a great choice for a budget build rowdy runabout. You can make 300hp no problem with a good set of smoggers and 300 to 325hp is more than enough to have fun roast tires and have a fun little hot rod, the old 5.0HO mustangs had big rep back in the day and with a net HP 215-225 and gross HP was 260ish and mehh TQ.... Well toss a 300hp 300+ TQ 350 in something like a 3rd gen camaro and you would run away from stock 5.0 fox body's effortlessly. For any of you youngsters trying to get a fun car on a shoestring or anyone for that matter getting into the newly revived hotrod movement on a tight budget Find a decent 350 short block like a vortec someone already robbed the heads off is perfect, a decent set of smoggers, watch some videos and do some home porting and try it it's pretty fun and satisfying and well worth the effort, grab a howards flat tappet cam kit there still pretty cheap something in the 230°@.050 duration ballpark and . 480 to .500 lift 108°CL and 108° LSA, some budget "Z28" springs, any decent aluminum intake even an regular old performer, whatever working edlebrock 4bbl you can find, an old hei distributor install a $100 proform hop up kit and you have a 300ish HP 350 for peanuts easily under a grand $500 is your resourceful, drop it in a $1000 sn95 mustang (OG fox body's great but are are getting expensive) or Camaro, toss a cheap b&m shift kit in a marketplace th350 from a v8 ( but a converter from a 4.3 v6 is a bonus find) and you have a little hotrod that will easily get you in the low 13s (or 8s in 1/8) for what you would pay for a tired carolla or accord with 250k on the clock. One of the bigger part investments would be headers whether it's mustang swap type starting at about $350+, cheap Camaro headers about half that. This budget combo is even fun in an square body or obs pickup truck. Whatever vehical you build rear gears should be one of the first down the road upgrades just don't go to low stay in 3:55 to 3:73 or you will constantly be turning to much rpm and be above the meat of the Tq curve, you need to take advantage it's healthy midrange Tq of this combo. You don't need a turbo and 1000hp or even close to that to have fun by any stretch in all actuality those cars are not that great on the street there expensive ,temperamental and it's problematic to be able to use that much HP on the street, a solid 300hp+ in a light vehical has TONS of smiles per mile and that combo will have a rowdy potato potato sounding idle it will get you a bunch of attention at your local small town hangout.... Or envy of your friends at your high school.... And a 100/150hp shot kit is pretty safe and relatively cheap too... Good upgrade after gears....search KZfaq for this type of redneck racecar you will find it.

I like the video and information attempt although it has a lot of errors. 624 heads were built by GM with 1.72/1.50, 1.94/1.50 and even 2.02/1.60 valve combinations. The L82 Corvette engines had them with largest valves. The heavy duty LT9 350 had the smaller intake valves and had valve rotators on both intake and exhaust. As for swirl ports, there were 3 different 350 castings. 191, 193, and 810. They are all about 65cc. A 76 cc swirl port head does not exist from GM although the 187 305 head had a 1.84 valve and 58cc chamber. The heavy duty TBI 350 had an 18cc dished piston vs a 12cc dish on the light duty engine giving it the lower 8.75:1 compression ratio vs 9.3:1 on the lighter duty engine. HD engine started at 8,600 lbs gvw. It was not the combustion chamber that made the difference. 191 heads I have cc'd were all in the 65-66cc range. B/D-cars had a L98 TPI flat top piston with 6cc worth of valve reliefs giving them a 9.6:1 compression ratio with the 193s. Vortec heads, Mexican vs Canadian are different castings. The Mexican heads flow about 20 cfm less, they port stall before 0.450 lift and they are more prone to cracking than the OE Canadian heads. Vortec engines also came in some GMT800 trucks through 2007 but those were all the junk Mexican castings. They have a block that is newer than an 880 casting and had bosses for the LS 4-bolt motor mounts. They also had the regular old front side mounting bosses, 1 overlaps the LS pattern and the 2 blocks I have had did not have the two most foward bosses drilled or tapped for a traditional SBC mount. Mexican 062 I had flowed 215 cfm @ 0.400 then dropped off to 207 cfm @ 0.450 and beyond. Canadian 906 head from the factory engine in my 1997 Express flowed 236 @ 0.450 and 242 @ 0.500. Those 906s also had the pressed in exhaust seat which does hurt flow a bit, but not all 906 castings did. Some 906s were induction hardened seats like the 062s.

☝️ Can you drill the center bolt valve head to take a perimeter valve cover? ✌️ What can be done to stave off the cracking of the Vortec head? 👌 Frankly, I dont ever plan to rev (on a constant basis) past 4500 anyway, so the swirl head redrilled, if possible, would keep the vintage look n work well in my upcoming C3 project.

I believe you can drill the heads to accept perimeter valve cover studs. I’ve personally never done it but I know back in the old racing days certain race classes would call for cast iron small block Chevy heads but the Vortec heads were outlawed so guys would drill the intake and drill for the perimeter studs to hide that they where Vortec heads.

@@johncalhoun8011 I don’t have any A to B tests. The 350 I built was a swirl port headed 350 with a small cam originally. So it probably made 250-275 horsepower. With the new cam and the vortec heads it easily has to make 350-375 horse if not more. I did the light bowl blend and port matched the intake and a bunch of other little stuff. But if I had to guess I’d say I might have picked up an extra 10 horse just from the bowl blend and port match. Which this is all a hypothetical, I don’t have any real proof. I had an stern drive boat with 217 casting, 64cc center bolt valve cover non swirl port heads, the bowtie manifold and a Q-Jet. It was rated 280 hp using the GM 6492' roller cam. That cam is a little bigger than the 90s LT1 Corvette cam and a little smaller than the ZZ3-6 cam. Very strong runner with a lot of midrange torque. The 217 heads are basically identical to the 083 TPI heads but came with either the older 55-86 intake pattern or the 87-95 intake pattern depending on what they were on. My uncle bought a 1994 1500 with the 5.7L when it was new. I did the valve cover gaskets on it in the early 2000s. It had 217s and a OE roller cam. Always thought that truck ran really well compared to the 1994 2 door Yukon I had and then found out why.
