This weeks repair is my AKG K52 headphones, which suddenly went mono.
After a bit of troubleshooting, this really did only take a minute or so to mend, and once more proved that it's worth having a go when there's nothing to loose.

Can I just say: THANK YOU !!! 😊 I found your video simple and logical to follow, your voice very pleasant to listen to (your explanations as you went - just great!) and your message of 'have a go' BRILLIANT !!! You clearly love doing what you do, and I thank you for making such helpful videos that are also enjoyable to watch. THIS particular video helped us repair a favorite pair of K92's (similar construction) that kept a Voice Over actor very happy indeed! Cheers mate! 🎙👍

My K92's have just suddenly gone mono. Will inspect and investigate the fault with your guidance. I have to admit a level of sincere admiration to the designers that the structural rails that create the headband suspension are actually conducting the signal. I did not see that coming and was always wondering if one of the rails was actually hollow carrying both the wires or something. Pretty impressive design.

@@sherllock The wires that carry the sound to the other speaker, inside the ear piece are soldered to the metal headband. Google image search "dismantle AKG K92" 20th image you will see what I mean. The metal headband carries the electrical signal to the other side. Hope this helps bro. Check all your wire connects, also many other youtube videos showing the process. Good luck bro.

@@sherllock the metal headband inside the speaker case is uninsulated (the metal is exposed ) and is soldered to a connecting speaker wire , outside the speaker case however, the headband is coated with a black insulating paint that does not allow current to conduct when touched. Thanks so much! I love this line/AKG 52 and own 3 pairs, 2 had gone out on one side over the last year or so and I was about to give up on buying again. I was almost positive it was maybe I rolled over the cord with my studio chair and needed to cut the whole thing and replace. Thanks to your video it turned out on both pairs your same issue with the small frayed wire deepest inside after unscrewing all 5 screws. But mine were both in the Right side. So if you're reading this and don't have a multimeter, you can still visually check it. Mine both were the black ones and could see the breaks throughout. So I just snipped (leave a little on the headphone side if you're not real good at soldering like me lol), I stripped a little on the main side with scissors very gently. Solder, I used electrical tape to really keep it from vibrating loose again too. Thanks again so much for this comprehensive video!!!!!

Common design flaw with the K52,72,92 series headphones. Have repaired mine at least 5 times in the 4 years that I've owned them and every time was right speaker loss due to frayed wires in that left headphone. Unsure exactly why only the left headphone wire frays, but mine was the exact same as in this video. Cheers!

@@thesmallshed Absolutely! I believe the issue is pulling/tugging caused by tight tolerance of the hole leading from the speaker cone to the headband. I think making these holes bigger or lubricating with graphite might eliminate it. Another alternative could be to take the tension off the solder joints at the band so there's no twisting, but I'm unsure how this could be done besides gluing the cable down along its path.

Thanks for this great video! I have been considering buying these headphones as they are on sale for $29.99 USD and get great reviews. I have had one concern and that is a short in the wiring. Many of this model's competitors have detachable cords which I've thought might be a deal beaker since in many cases in my past the cord has been the weakness. These things seem really easy to do DIY "post-warranty" surgery on thanks to this video. Thanks again... I'm now a subscriber.

Yep - Same issue with mine. It too me a while and testing all kinds of adapters and interfaces before I determined it was the headphones. Plugging & unplugging the included cable would sometimes fix it. Mine started messing up with in the 1st few days of taking out of the box. If I twisted the left headphone the right side would kick in and out. I think it's a bad design? Headphones sound good - when they work.

The initial multimeter test you did is not quite the correct method, I'm fairly certain.. The base of the plug is the common ground, not the tip. So you would normally test the base to the "tip" & the base to the "ring" (centre contact on the plug) for left and right channels on a TRS type plug. Hope that helps! 🕵🏼

The two headband metal strips are used to conduct the signal to the other side, so any problem is likely to be where the wires connect to the strips at either side.
