Are you guilty of this serious topwater lure mistake?
It's tempting to use snap swivels on your topwater plugs to make switching them out easier, but there's a reason you should NEVER use them. This common mistake is turning fish off.
So, take 90 seconds and let Coach Tony show you exactly how using a snap swivel changes the way your topwater plugs behave... and the reason fish aren't hitting them.
Once you know, check out our video on how to tie a loop knot so you can get back in the game quickly when you need to retie while giving your lure with an irresistible action fish just can't resist!

There are many quick clips that weigh almost nothing. Spro,Tactical etc. Your example is the heaviest..

I use those to quick change lures that come with split rings - I remove the split ring, the clip does the same job. My light inshore I usually direct tie with a loop knot (also no split ring). They use the heaviest - a coastlock with a swivel to exaggerate for easier illustration I guess, but yeah I've never seen anybody but a googan use a coastlock on anything like that.

I think I learned more about why not to use fluorocarbon but instead, mono, than the snap swivel. Great demo!

Personally I have designated poles with and without snap swivels. It just depends on what I'm fishing for and lure type. It's less confusing and faster lure change outs. Fluro, Mono and Braid are on specific rod and reel combos as well. More time fishing when set up before the trip.

try the paperclip style "power clips" (many different names / brands) you'll be hooked! (pun intended). Remove split rings if the exist, tie clip direct to leader. Fast, easy, works really well for bigger lures. I use them a lot on my surf and pier setups.

That’s a great comparison between the two. But the comparisons are in a static situation. I wonder if it’s an issue in the typical dynamic situation. While fishing the top water, you are pulling the bait. The swivel will be more horizontal than hanging vertically so the effect on the rear may not be as dramatic. And pulling the lure will bring the nose down a bit, lifting the rear. Just wondering.

its not that huge of a deal if its a large topwater, and you're using a tiny power clip after removing the split ring, but that huge coast lock and swivel is way way far from ideal.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong Күн бұрын
That's a good thought. One of the biggest things we noticed was that this setup forced the nose of the plug to dive down, limiting its walk-the-dog action. It'd be cool to try this again in slow motion and see exactly what the swivel assembly is doing at a normal retrieval pace.

Loops knots are best but I still prefer a tactical angler clip for quick change of lures they're fairly small and don't seem to impact the action of the lures.

Lures that come with split rings, lures that are pulled hard and fast like crankbaits whether or not they come with them - I use these clips. I can switch between a crank bait, flair hawk, larger topwater, jerk bait, or spoon very quickly. Small finesse lures like mirrodine 17mr or a rapala sub surface - I tie a loop knot.

VMC Crankbait snaps are the deal. Used by pro bass fisherman and made to not impact crankbait action (other lures as well) = good enough for them = good enough for me. Great for mid-water column straight retrievers (swimbaits, cranks, etc.). Personally have not had an issue with topwater walking or wakebaits either. Note, they are a lot smaller/lighter than other convention swivel/snap options like this one shown. In terms of visual, if a predatory fish can see the hooks I don't think they will mind a very lightweight snap.

I use smallish powerclips for surf / pier fishing with gotcha plugs, diamond jigs, big flair hawks and that sort of thing. They work great. Remove split rings, tie clip direct to line. No tools, no springy wires to fumble with like a normal snap / coastlock.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong Күн бұрын
Yes. Most lures are designed and tested to be tied onto mono/fluoro, and anything that changes the way the line sits at the connection will change the lure's behavior. That said, we've had several great suggestions for alternative clips that might work better. We're planning a follow-up video with those right now.

Why would Anyone use a swivel on a lure that doesn't spin? In addition, the snap/swivel used in the demonstration video is oversized ... obviously too large for the lure. A properly sized snap alone is quite sufficient, and certainly doesn't interfere with topwater action. Loop knots are highly overrated ... a needless fetish. I've never seen an underwater video that showed any difference between the snap and the loop action of a plug, or jig. Better to tie a good knot on a snap. Soft plastics are always direct tie, until shown otherwise. Only spoons & spinners need swivels.
@notsure7874
@notsure7874 29 күн бұрын
I don't even use swivels with spoons. The line will twist with a swivel pretty much as bad as without one anyway. Every now and then I rip it out there and retrieve slow enough for any twists to come out. This is inshore gear I'm talking not trolling boat propellers to catch megalodons ;)

@@jond5925 A lot of people use swivels when they don't need to. We've seen with braid that the line often twists even with a swivel attached. We'll add your question to the list and see about getting a more comprehensive answer out there.

@@jond5925 Swivel placement is another mistake. Most of the time you want it at the mainline to leader connection, but for a metal spoon, you might want it connected directly to the spoon instead. Bass guys will do this when they're tying direct to braid.

That's out go to most of the time! If you have something like a weedless football jig where the hook can freely swing on the weight, you can tie a stronger knot that cinches down against the weight, though.

Lose the barrel swivel . If you’re concerned about line twist use the barrel on a 3 ft. or more leader . Scale down the clip to smaller size, yet very strong, and use 40,50,60, leader. I have no problem with loops, I use them all the time fly fishing . Throwing plugs it’s a clip all the way . I’ve caught more fish on pencils. spooks , creek chubs, and every popper known to mankind, never a problem.

It's more about what it does to the action of the lure. With this swivel setup, the lure dives down some as you twitch, limiting its side-to-side action and changing the noise profile quite a bit. It ends up acting less natural and reducing the number of strikes you earn.

Seriously? That snap is huge, who actually uses that on a lure? Not a good example, IMO. Ex., a Norman Speed Clip works great, is very light and non reflective.
