I've been excited to get my hands on this camera for a long time. It took a little bit of luck, and a missing grip to get a great deal a few months ago and here we are.
The Sony R1 is an APS-C sensor camera from 2005. It was the first camera to use an APS-C sensor on a fixed lens camera. It also has an amazing tilty screen that sits on top of the camera. But best of all, the 24-120mm equivalent Carl Zeiss branded lens is fantastic. Overall, great camera, just good luck getting a good deal on one! They seem to be raising in price just like other cameras these days.

I had one about a year after its release, still have it and it is still working, just quite slow operation and dynamic range a little limited. Later smaller compact cameras caught up with using the CMOS image quality (higher ISO), plus video functions, which the Sony didn't do, it was a still camera only. The Sony business had just acquired Minolta around this time, so I know then there will never be a Sony R2. I waited and waited. The Sony TLR cameras were their key step into the bigger digital camera market to compete with Canon, Nikon and Pentax and so the R1 special design seemed to have then got forgotten about, although other bridge cameras used the smaller sensors. I was proud to be using a larger format sensor and loved the Carl Zeiss lens, especially the 24mm end. But I knew that Sony wasn't going to do anything more with the R range as their DSLR using the semi translucent mirrors was their profitable business. On the R1, the all in one design solved / avoided the issue of getting dust on the sensor too, as Olympus was the only one who was trying to address that during those early years. Now vibrating dust removal is part of most system cameras, back then it was a pain to most photographers (that cared).

Sony has long been a creative lead in the tech fields, and the R1 is a great example. I absolutely wanted one of these back in the day. I used to refer to it as the 'backpack camera' because it looked like it was carrying a little backpack. Eventually, I chose to go into the Canon DSLR system because of the limitations of a fixed lens camera, but this video reminded me of how much I wanted a Sony R1.

Nice video, I remember testing it in 2005 and making it the first review on my cameralabs website, and one of my last I wrote for the traditional mags I was working for at the time. It was pretty notable in 2005 for being the first large sensor with Live View, something which wouldn't come to DSLRs until quite a bit later. It also sported 10MP at a time when most rival DSLRs only had 8 or even 6, which was quite a big deal. But even back then, I felt the noise and DR performance wasn't as good as I'd hoped for the sensor size. That said, I still adore the physical design and the promise of what the lens and sensor might have done, and managed to bag one for my collection a couple of years ago - still haven't got round to making a retro review of it for my vintage channel yet, as I'm doing the F series in order right now! Anyway, enjoying your videos and your take on these old cameras.

@@snappiness I'm trying to get hold of the first versions in each key series between 1995 and 2005, and make videos about them on my Dino Bytes channel. For example, the Canon PowerShot G1, Nikon COOLPIX 900 or Sony F505. Once those are done I can supplement them with key favourites later in the series, for example I will do ALL the Sony F series cameras as I really enjoyed them all. It's funny, as I can also refer back to my original written magazine reviews from the 90's and early 2000's before my website and main KZfaq channel. I already have most of the cameras I need to complete my project, but I've only re-visited about ten of them.

I used a R1 for a while when it came out. Really innovative camera in many ways, but IMO it also suffered a bit by being first generation. While not slow in use when compared to many other fixed lens cameras at that time it couldn't really compete with dSLRs in handling speed - AF, turn on, buffer size and write speed to the cards and (really bad) - no video function which almost all fixed lens cameras had. Many waited for and hoped for a R2, but then Sony bought Minolta's camera division and put most of their efforts into the Alpha system cameras for a long time. They did make the RX10 though which IMO is a pretty good successor.

The price of the R1 has now escalated to a range of $200 to even $300 from trustworthy sellers on eBay, a stark contrast from the previous range of $140 to $180 before your video aired. As a fellow collector, I find myself in an unanticipated race with popular KZfaqrs like yourself to secure a good deal. I got one just days before your video for $140. Your rapid exposure of these hidden gems has inadvertently impacted my collection process. Once, I could leisurely peruse eBay and other marketplaces for overlooked treasures. But with the increased attention, hunting for bargains has become significantly more challenging than it was a year ago. The problem lies with the scarcity of these vintage items. Even a small surge in attention can cause a lasting increase in price due to the limited supply. I rue the missed opportunity to purchase the Galaxy NX for $200 prior to your video, as it has now become prohibitively expensive. And I paid at least $150 more for collecting my Samsung ex1 and ex2f.

Might be forgotten for most but unforgettable for me. I bought this at launch price with money saved from my first office job. Sounds stupid but I wanted it so bad because it was so avant-garde compared to entry level dslrs of the day. (I upgraded to the R1 from an EOS 350D). Lot's of amazing (to me) photos I took with it. Cool video. To be fair, the R1 *was* considered a big deal back in the day. As you say, the lackluster EVF, and also the ‘parsimonious’ speed of the camera were seen as big drawbacks, as well as its “no man’s land” pricing (too expensive for fixed lens, not premium enough to replace an actual DSLR) meant it didn’t destroy the entry-level DSLR market, and also meant that Sony would jump right into that category soon thereafter. But! Sales of the R1 were good, and it saw a whole line of spiritual successors in the RX10s. When the first one was launched, pretty much everyone immediately thought of the R1, and there was a big nostalgic moment for it. Nonetheless, it’s great that you covered one of the most momentous digital cameras. It’s amazing to think of how many things the R1 was a harbinger of (the CMOS supremacy, mirrorless operation, premiumization, the coalescence of the “weird” layouts of the early ‘00s into a more familiar style, the push for larger sensor sizes…)

@Ildskalli
@Ildskalli Жыл бұрын
@@parthsavyasachi9348 It *was* pretty foolish of DPR to somehow twist it into a con, but on the other hand, the "dual" card slots don't behave as they do on pro bodies. They're an either/or affair, just like on high-end Olympus and Sony DSLRs before 2014. So, they're not as advantageous as they might seem.
@parthsavyasachi9348
@parthsavyasachi9348 Жыл бұрын
@@Ildskalli well no one provided at that point so this could be considered as extra memory. An extra memory can not be a con. If others provided and it was inferior then there might a point to dpr. Anyway dpr was quite anti sony back then. This changed when sony once didn't send them their one major release and some other site had review on first day of release. After that point in time dpr started to have positive bias towards sony. (I believe in the background they had "talk") Ps: dpr has negative bias againt pentax too. They still have it.
@Ildskalli
@Ildskalli Жыл бұрын
@@parthsavyasachi9348 I disagree. DPR just seem heavily focused on what's trending 'now', but have piss-poor accuracy predicting the future. Thus, when the Olympus E-510 introduced live view, Phil Askey infamously called it "a solution looking for a problem". When Nikon introduced HD video recording on the D90, they said "meh". And they haven't always missed the mark - when Olympus made the first high-end IBIS system on the E-M5, they were impressed and called out its significance. Despite all its inadequacies, they saw huge potential in the original A7. I don't think they're biased against any manufacturer. Maybe they're a bit biased in favor of Canon, although they've called out their cripple hammer multiple times too.

The R1 was my first digital camera, now loaned to a friend, and I agree with everything you said. I took many beautiful photos with it, as you have done, but I got the "bug" to have a full-frame sensor camera that could take my old Nikon lenses, including a shift lens, which I missed during my time with the R1. The only problem I ever had with it was that, once in a while, the auto-focus would "miss" completely! And you know how poor the viewfinder is for manual focusing. I've always thought the EVF was the reason this camera didn't sell well. Great review! 😁

I still miss the best feature from R1: in MF mode you can press the Focus button, and you still get the advantage of AF, and when the one time AF done, you can recompose the image without any half pressed expo button. And for manual focusing you can read the actual focusing distance which was a real help in dark environments, when I got only only a Nikon SB24 flash.

I bought my Sony R1 in April 2006. Really like the camera, make great images. Actually shot several weddings with it. The only problems were after iso 400 the grain became a real issue and the auto focus was not very reliable. About 1/4 of the images would be slightly off focus, not good when shooting a wedding. However, when it worked, the images were beautiful. They have a smooth feel about them that I really liked. Just picked up the camera for 70 bux after watching your video, I was intrigued and it might also be a fun camera for my kids. After playing with it a bit for a day, I tried portraits at full zoom and wide open, the bokeh separation is very nice for a bridge camera, jpeg colors are decent but it’s better to rework the raw files. There’s a certain lack of detail due the native noise and older cmos sensor. It’s possible to make the photos look sharper and less noisy by playing in lightroom, silkypix or any raw software. The simple interface and direct buttons are great foe quick access. The bokeh at 24mm 2.8 is nice too ! And the best feature is the medium-format-like top screen, it’s very convenient for framing low angles and kids. Great camera overall but it would have been perfect if it used a CCD sensor ;)

My first Sony digital camera was the DSC-S70. it looked like my Instamatic 404. In other words, a rectangular box! Operations and button layout weren't great; but it had a Zeiss lens and took really beautiful pictures. So when the R1 came out, I upgraded. Both the DSC-70 and R1 were not cheap at my modest income; but I never regretted. I took many lovely pictures of my growing family with those 2 cameras. Sony cameras from that era produced such beautiful rendering. The colors were rich and and a 'sweetness' that I can't explain. I have not seen sweet colors like those from any other cameras. A few years ago, I bought a Sony A7. I didn't like the pictures. May be it was because I didn't get a Zeiss lens for it. In any case, I found the colors dull and so I sold it. However, I still have and cherish my DSC-S70 and R1. I still take them out occasionally to look at them. They are both wonderful machines and have preserved so many wonderful memories through so many special occasions. They are like my family and I will never sell them.

I had it. It's a wonderful design but 9 years ahead of technology. One super power was its leaf shutter that allowed for much higher flash sync speeds thus suppressing ambient light with a small flash strobe. Sony's CMOS had a higher noise floor and smaller full well capacity than Canon's back then and this made shooting in low light challenging not only for image quality but autofocus. The linear motor AF drive was fast and accurate but often had to slow down to wait for the image sensor to gather enough noisy blurry frames to see any contrast. Imagine what a remake can do with even just an A6000's image sensor and phase detection AF. The grip was deep and secure. My nose wouldn't smudge the screen. And of course the lens was wonderful.

I have got two of this model from ATG. ATG DSC-R1 IR and ATG DSC-R1 UV, both are very rare. The optics are ATG/Ziess lenses, before it becomes Japan Zeiss.

One of the best cameras ever, it makes you forget you are using a digital camera and you can even use it in the dark. Many of my best photos were taken with it and I used it until it got stolen. I didn't purchase another model though as to use it at its best I had to use a backpack with a tripod. As I don't like DSLRs and I prefer cameras with fixed lenses and big sensors I decided for a Fujifilm X100S as a good compromise for the lack of zoom. But if I had wanted the same zoom and focus blur capabilities I had gotten instead a Canon G5 X mark II, which surely hasn't such a superb optically corrected lens as the Carl Zeiss, and the shooting experience isn't as pure, but I could do the same images while not needing a backpack to get the most of it. The Canon has "just" a one inch sensor but technology has advanced so much that the DNGs from my Samsung S20 FE cellphone are comparable in dynamic range and detail to the raw photos from my Sony R1. But I miss the experience, makes me think I could only get it from medium format film cameras.

Got mine in 2005 pre-ordered to replace my 828. Still have it and occasionally use it. You give a good review stressing both its strengths and weaknesses. For its time it was a really fine option but now seems desperately slow with poor high ISO performance, slow write speeds and a truly awful EVF. Great build quality though. You could extend the range of the camera with lens attachments (very expensive - did Sony actually sell any?) and of course close up lenses. Batteries were not cheap and although I bought a charger most owners charged in camera. Great camera for a vintage all in one ( though my RX 100 gives markedly superior results and is a tiny miracle In real use it is a pain compared to my DSLR s - and the R1)

It produces stunning images, but it is slow. I have landscape 20x30 prints that I think are as good as it gets. Low iso is a must ,It was so good I got 2 second hand, not used for sometime as its BIG. The lens will cover 95 percent of most peoples need. I got the add on tele lens as well but never used it! As now have many cameras Fuji Sony Canon Olympus, if they all went I would be happy with this camera for landscape its that good.

Back into Fall 2005, i wanted 2 things 1) R1 2) 5D. I bought my R1 into feb. 2006, and the 5D into Summer 2006. FYI, with ETTR, one could use even ISO 3200. But as an advice, i'd ordinary never go beyond ISO 400. ISO 160-400 is fine. The lens is great, the EVF is 2005 standard, but the 24-120/2.8-4.8 T* Zeiss Lens excels for landscape, architecture & objects. I use my R1 for architecture, landscape and statues work ever since then. Be sure to update the Firmware to 2.0 in order to avoid hotpixels into specific situations. Sadly, over the ages, during mist & winter shots, my R1 developed glas funghi, so i replaced it with another copy. 10 MP is plenty of MP. AF is fast enough for still photography. I rarely crop, 95% never.

The Olympus E-10 was what got me dreaming of owning a hefty all in one digital camera, but that was 2001 ish. I ultimately got my hands on a Panasonic FZ1 which had the amaizing lens that maintained F2.8 all the way through zooming but it was slow at everything yet could give stunning close ups. By 2005 DSLR models were being knocked out by everybody and I took the plunge on a Pentax ist DS mainly because, as you concluded, electronic viewfinders just weren't very good back then, and the Pentax was relatively cheap, and accepted old lenses, and was first to use the all new SD cards! Shame it was a bit too plastic.

I only recently sold my Pentax *ist DL. I found one for $20 a few years back. Great camera. Not a ton of features, but a nice sensor and using the old lenses was nice. I do still have my K10D though. That's a bit nicer of a old-dslr setup :)

Imagine modern Sony camera with this design, but with modern spec and E mount system. If they could make a one off camera with this design for modern audience, good specs, I think people would be fighting for it and maybe if proven to be popular, Sony will make more of this design.

@@snappiness yeah,that was the main reason I took it,despite the fact it has a smaller sensor than the R1. It changes your perspective. I used to shoot wide,now I'm scanning the surrounding to find something noticeable. But never gave up landscape or street photography. It's just narrower now at the wide end :) . I bought a spare battery to maintain the R1 at service. Sometimes,when I want to capture vast,beautiful landscapes I prefer the R1. I like the simplicity of that camera as well. You can do a lot of things quickly,without a lot of thinking. As you mentioned,the ergonomics are top class.

Somehow doubt he paid much for this, Zeis Lens or no. Fleabay could be one place to look. But, it shouldn't be the only place. I guess I'm fortunate enough to live in a place where we have a Small Ads website, which was ran by Fleabay of all people, seeing as you could see your tat, and not have to deal with all the typical eBay BS. It's not a wonder everyone in my area jumped ship. eBay recently sold that site off. But it still exists and is going stronger then ever. I used it to pick up a 5D mkII (fully working), with less than 25k actuations on it. For less than 300€ so it's quite possible. Would also recommend for Lenses.

The rubber grip on this camera doesn't age well. I own a copy, and I had to super glue the grip to the body before it came off. The lens is good but I don't like the quality of the bokeh at shots taken at regular distance like for portraits. An equivalent interchangeble lens would be the Sony 16-80mm Zeiss (A mount) lens which is also very sharp. Thanks for the video.

Someone remind me when Konica Minilta sold their Camera division off to S0NY again? Cause this Camera is giving me real K-M Dimage Z vibes. Sans the better construction, and the non K-M mount Hotshoe this could have easily been designd by them. (i.e. K-M).

Was this a S0NY design though? I don't think so. At least not wholely. I for one see Konica Minilta's Dimage Z series fingerprints all over it. Granted it's a heavily fingerprinted goldbar compared to the actual Dimage Z line, at the time. But, that design is unmistakable.
