This week, in honor of a friend's birthday, I did something I've never done before here in Xinjiang - I went skiing. Well, technically I went snowboarding in China.
I'm from Texas, so snow was not a big part of my life growing up. Sure, I took a trip to Colorado to try my hand at skiing, but until today I had never strapped on a snowboard. The first two hours were a mess, with faceplant after faceplant.
Thankfully, the third and fourth hours were much better. We went to the Silk Road Resort (丝绸之路滑雪场), one of the better places to ski near the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi. Cost to get in was only 100 RMB for 4 hours, including ski rental.
It was a wild ride and I have plenty of bruises and soreness to show for it, but I can now punch some new holes in my man card, officially calling myself a "snowboarder". Ha!

Man I dig the cinematic editing you put into this. No sweat wiping out, it took me a few days to learn how to shred powder. Awesome vid!!

Thanks, Kevin! You should come out here in the winter sometime. There are much better runs than what I show in this video...I just wasn't quite at the level to make them 😉

I have skied there maybe 6 times, it's not Utah either, but not bad for a skiing addict. Brought my own equipment with me from USA. The resort near heavenly lake is much better for intermediates. For advanced skiers and beginners NanShan is best. I haven't been skiing in Alti, so I can't comment there. There is only one intermediate level run here, otherwise you ski the steep face in the background. The face is quite fun if the steepness is something you are used to. They force you to sign a release paper to ride that upper chairlift and can't go there without a helmet, it ain't USA !! One last word, skiing "rocks". There is a reason we have 2 legs, not 1 leg, God made us for skiing :)

I don't know if it's changed from before, but now they won't let you ride any of the chairlifts without a helmet. You can do the little elevator to the bunny slopes, but that's it. 😂

Travel Xinjiang: Far West China: Yes 3 years ago, no helmet was required on the lower mountain. I never skied with a helmet prior to this in my life. In USA helmets are 100% optional at every resort. I always made my children wear helmets. In USA putting down the safety bar on the chairlift is optional, there they get very upset if you don't use it. They will act paniced and yell at you.

Warren Miller this was not but I really enjoyed it. For Xinjiang it was pretty good. To paraphrase your words. You have great content. You make me want to visit. You are Xinjiang tourism's best spokesman. They should pay you big bucks or should I say fu ni hen duo qian.

Ha! I think I'll take that compliment. I'm under no illusion that I'm a professional ski filmmaker. 😂 As for the money - sure would be nice if they paid me. Of course, I have a guess that taking any sort of government money would hurt my credibility.

Travel Xinjiang: Far West China: It didn't hurt Crocodile Dundee's (Paul Hogan) credibility when he became the official spokesperson for Australian tourism. His movie image and marketing adds took Australia from from 15th position preferred Tourist destination to number 1 in the late 80's. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtSPdrOjqLmcl6c.html

The far northwest of China is the Shanxi, Shaanxi and Ningxia region in the remote distant far north western frontier borderlands of China adjoining the International Border of the sovereign states of Mongolia and Tibet. The so called "Xinjiang" meaning "New Territory" is not a part of China and is under the illegal military occupation of China. China is not even contiguous to the sovereign State of East Turkistan which is a militarily occupied sovereign country adjoining India along the northern foothills of the Kuen Lun Range in the northern province of Kashmir. So you can go and enjoy yourself in the occupied country where there is an armed independence movement going on and if you are not shot in the cross fire, you can consider yourself lucky and enjoy your "vacation"!

yes“xin jiang” means “new terriory”, but it is abbreviation. the full meaning is "old terriory new return". if you learn some history, you will know han dynasty (2000 years ago)already conquer xinjiang, that time, no one heard Uygur... Uygur maybe come from middle Asia or middle east...after han dynasty
