Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.

Horny Aleks The government spies on you and collects data on you, because they have deemed you untrustworthy. What they are doing normally would require a court order signed by a judge for each and every person, this is a complete circumvention of the fourth amendment of constitution (the highest law of the land) and it is treasonous for those that took the oath to protect the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic (every government official has to take this oath). Snowden was the whistle blower that brought all of this to light, of course they would accuse him of doing the exact thing that he caught them doing. The government is collecting a massive file on each and everyone of you. The fact of the matter is that there is no digital vault that has not gone uncracked (office of personal management breach of june 2015 exposing 21 million peoples data) and the mere presence of a file with your personal data endangers you. All of this was done in the name of security.

+3vil3lvis not only that, but it doesnt guarantee any saftey at all, and the evidence resides in the last terrorists attacks. The guys who did it were all on the CIA's watch list yet they didnt stop it (either they couldnt, or just let it happen). Collecting massive data is just adding more haystack to the pile, because 99.99% of all the data is garbage... unless they have other motives.

If the other superpowers do this, we have to as well least we run the risk of outside powers simply moving into the country and operating undetected. Grow up. Anyone that knows anything about this field knows Snowden was not the first traitor, even in the agency he was contracted to. In YOUR world, if the U.S. is only allowed to run this level of surveillance on locations OCONUS, then a terrorist cell must only simply move to the U.S. in order to escape surveillance. Thank the Lord we do not live in a world with you making the decisions that matter. Grow up, learn to manage your own life, and for God sake, clean your house.

There has been no correlation between stopping terrorists and surveying everyone on the planet. And if you think about it. It makes no sense to survey everyone at the same time. No matter how many people are at the NSA, they can't filter the entire internet pool. You can't find the needle in a haystack if you looking at the whole thing all the time. No you need to check individual locations, not take everything into account all the time. That doesn't work. Personally I find him to be a hero, and that's my opinion and you don't have to agree. He gave up his freedom and put himself into harms way to let us know what the government was illegally doing behind the worlds back, and against the trust of US companies such as google and Microsoft. He deserves to be commended for his bravery not exiled, or jailed or killed.

Premium Heck, this is extremely vital information, the NSA is disregarding the 4th amendment in the name of "counter-terrorism" and yet there hasn't been a single case where their mass collection of data has helped stop a terrorist attack! Don't you think they would display that as an example to justify their actions?

Excelent !!!

So if you hate the idea then take whatever terrorist acts that falls on your country. Germany ran the same "freedom" speech with heavy migration agenda and now suffering for it. Sweden, a once very peaceful place now in turmoil. When God imposed restrictions on ancient Israel, they rebelled in their defiance of freedom. However God executed many of them with his insistence on compliance. No one has unaccountable freedom

All the guy did was tell us all something that we already knew; even if you failed to read your cell phone contracts, phone surveillance had been the subject of every late-night monologue and sketch-comedy show from 2001 to 2008. Snowden is only a hero to the kind of person whose biggest fear is that the government will find out that his search history contains "Game of Thrones torrent" and "nude shapchat hacks".

This was all talked about for years, a former employee form AT&T had already been speaking about this when he discovered a room where all communication was going through and could be tapped. It was all called a "conspiracy theory" but by Snowden releasing the documents it just confirmed it.
@koonteriskool
@koonteriskool 7 жыл бұрын
Government surveillance was already exposed by Russ Tice, who beat Snowden to it, who is the real hero in all this, then after him Thomas Drake, another NSA employee beat Snowden to it as well, however few people paid attention to this as both were in their 50s and overweight, thus not "sexy" enough for the media. Snowden on the other hand, a 20 something year old hipster, was much easier on the eyes. Its the Anna Chapman effect, the Russian spy who was caught by the FBI, she was one of 10 spies in the ring, and was also one of the least successful, but can you name any of the others? No, because she had big jugs and the rest didnt. The reason many dislike Snowden is because much of the classified data he stole (such as files on NSA's surveillance of Taliban in Pakistan) had nothing to do with "personal freedoms" and were clearly stolen just so he could use them as a bargaining chip to extract asylum demands from different nations.

@IHLWonk 7 жыл бұрын
Mass surveillance. He has claimed the NSA read all of your comments, posts, emails, IMs, etc. That they listen into your phone calls, or have that ability to do so, on a mass scale. This is a lie. Even his own leaked documents show as much. Everything, all of the 1.5 million documents or so he leaked to the Russians, and the world were mostly on foreign powers, as you'd expect. Only one program _could_ target US persons, and that's FISA section 215. Which, has been shown in his leaked documents, and subsequent follow up reviews of other documents, and investigations, do not break the law, and had numerous protections in place for privacy and civil liberties. So, lets define what "metadata" is in this context: According to the NSA/ODNI (officially and through the leaks), it is data that describes other data - such as for emails: The email addresses, and *_NOT_* the content of the emails... for phone call data, it is merely the duration of the call, the calling/receiving numbers. This can be noted on the Office of the Inspector General's 'Implementation of section 215 of the US patriot act and section 702 of the FISA amendments act of 2008' lawfareblog.com/nsa-ig-report-reveals-new-information-section-702-collection On page 153 for Section 215 (which was the only thing that dealt with US persons): "The BR (Business Records) order requires that providers produce to NSA certain information about telephone calls, principally those made within the US and those between the US & foreign countries. This information is limited to BR metadata, which includes information concerning telephone numbers used to make and receive calls, when the calls took place, and how long the calls lasted but doesn't not include information about the content of the calls, the names of the participants, or the cell site location information (CSLI)." ^That report was declassified around Feb of this year. Only in September of this year, another report, declassified from the DOJ's IG for the FBI's use of section 215 from 2012-2014. www.lawfareblog.com/doj-oig-report-use-section-215 For that, I'd skip to page 8, titled, 'The process for seeking section 215 orders' Now, as for Snowden's documents in which support the Governments claims in these reports, nsarchive.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB436/docs/EBB-023.pdf ^Skip to page 15 (of the scan also as page 19 of the PDF). Through to the next page - where it defines what metadata is: "Metadata is data that describes other data, specifically information that describes the content, events or networks associated with SIGINT targets. For example, for an email message, it would include the sender and recipient email addresses. It does not contain the subject line or the text of the email; they are considered to be content. Likewise, for a telephone conversation, metadata would include the called number and the calling number as well as the duration of the call." We also know Snowden failed his annual NSA test for section 702 and 215 - he actually complained it was rigged to be too hard. The test accounted for knowledge on the privacy protection, authorisation, and several other factors that should be noted. This claim is supported by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence's report, 'Executive summary of review of the unauthorized disclosures of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden' www.lawfareblog.com/house-intelligence-committee-releases-snowden-report-summary "It is also not clear Snowden understood the numerous privacy protections that govern the activities of the IC. He failed basic annual training for NSA employees on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and complained the training was rigged to be overly difficult. This training included explanations of the privacy protections related to the PRISM program that Snowden would later disclose." Where else has Snowden lied? Well, to that lets look at some interviews and claims made about how he tried to warn the NSA about the legalities involved. The biggest touting place for the claim comes from an article by VICE, 'Exclusive: Snowden Tried to Tell NSA About Surveillance Concerns, Documents Reveal' The documents in question come from a FOIA lawsuit as noted by several experts in the legal and national security realm, as well as anyone such as myself who simply read the actual documents, well - we arrive at a totally different conclusion. They show Snowden didn't send any emails but one, which was focused on asking for clarification on a training slide, and had two additional contacts with compliance officials unrelated to raising legal or privacy concerns about NSA programs. For a much more in-depth break down, I'd suggest reading here: 'VICE's Vice: Snowden Scoop Promises Fire, Doesn't Even Muster Smoke' www.lawfareblog.com/vices-vice-snowden-scoop-promises-fire-doesnt-even-muster-smoke We also have a well-documented research paper, on the issue titled ' In defense of FAA section 702: An examination of its justification, operational employment, and legal underpinnings' Some key notes to take away from the document: www.hoover.org/sites/default/files/research/docs/indefenseoffaasection702_inglis-kosseff.pdf "If NSA employees fail to follow any of the detailed limitations on their ability to collect or use the Section 702 data, they are subject to a number of internal compliance positions, including the employees’ supervisors, NSA’s director of civil liberties and privacy, NSA’s general counsel, and NSA’s inspector general. And while concerns about potential abuse properly inform the diligence with which controls are designed and enforced, numerous and extensive investigations conducted by outside parties before and after the sensational claims of Edward Snowden in 2013 have yet to document a single case of abuse of Section 702 data by an individual or a systemic abuse by the NSA. Indeed, as Geoffrey Stone, the Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago and a member of the President’s 2013 NSA Review Group, stated in an op-ed in March 2014: _From the outset, I approached my responsibilities as a member of the Review Group with great skepticism about the NSA. I am a long-time civil libertarian, a member of the National Advisory Council of the ACLU, and a former Chair of the Board of the American Constitution Society._ _To say I was skeptical about the NSA is, in truth, an understatement. I came away from my work on the Review Group with a view of the NSA that I found quite surprising._ _Not only did I find that the NSA had helped to thwart numerous terrorist plots against the United States and its allies in the years since 9/11, but I also_ _found that it is an organization that operates with a high degree of integrity and a deep commitment to the rule of law._ _Like any organization dealing with extremely complex issues, the NSA on_ _occasion made mistakes in the implementation of its authorities, but it invariably reported those mistakes upon discovering them and worked conscientiously to correct its errors._ _The Review Group found no evidence that the NSA had knowingly or intentionally engaged in unlawful or unauthorized activity. To the contrary, it has put in place carefully-crafted internal procedures to ensure that it operates within the bounds of its lawful authority."_ And the conclusion: *A complete examination of Section 702 reveals a program that is painstakingly designed* *to protect the privacy of US persons to the greatest extent possible while also* *gathering valuable intelligence for national security.* *Section 702 achieves the twin goals of the Constitution’s* *preamble: providing for the common defense and securing the blessings of liberty.* And as noted in an extensive 2013 analysis, the United States is the only nation in the world where “. . . _such surveillance is subject to review by courts presided over by_ _federal judges,_ _with appeals possible to the US Supreme Court._ _The law enforcement agencies tasked with complying with FISA_ _are required to provide regular compliance reports to the_ _Congressional committees with responsibility over national security.”_ Given the Constitution’s mandate for limited but effective government, this burden is both appropriate and well imposed. It remains the gold standard in a world searching for the means to achieve the dual aims of security and the defense of individual liberties. *The critics of Section 702 have failed to provide persuasive evidence that Section 702 is either unconstitutional* *or bad public policy, and therefore have not made the case for modification or repeal of the law. For that reason, Congress should* *reauthorize Section 702 without any significant amendments." So, after all of this, and more - we can only conclude two things: Snowden lied. Or Snowden didn't read his own documents, and ran with it.

Satellites can see through your walls and your electronic devices can be made to overheat to do things from download your data(or upload data) to seeing you in a radius around the device even when you're not holding it. Tap over your camera is meaningless. Just hope you never experience the full scope of what they can do... some of us already have, and there's no recourse short of getting rid of your electronic devices. Even chucking them doesn't stop what they can do completely.

You guys are a bit too paranoid. The NSA does indeed spy but (1) they cannot simply look through your cameras, and (2) there isn't enough manpower to watch everyone in the country even if they could. You should only worry about your security if you're doing something that might get the NSA's attention.
@Blaze6108
@Blaze6108 7 жыл бұрын
Do you have any sources on this? From my understanding the only wavelength we can magnify significantly from spy satellites is visible light and some infrared. Being able to "see" things around a device "in a radius" sounds like bullshit to me, frankly.

Really? Are you the typical snowflake that believes the lie that "big bad evil America" is the only country that has mass surveillance? Grow up.

America is such an interesting country. You could get a prize on your head for telling the truth, take refuge in a country where the president is in a circus media act with your country's current one, pretty much in exile, and still have a movie about you made in that country. The interesting part is that this is how most Americans will know who you are and what you were trying to tell them, for the first time. Incredible.
