Argentina have always been a team of highs and lows. And after plateauing for the first time in decades at 2019, the last few years they've hit some proper all-time highs. So, after a win at Twickenham and two defeats of the All Blacks, is it finally time to call Argentina Rugby World Cup contenders?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can advance the technology required to make other human being able to kick as well as Boffelli

Interesting thing about Puma-Cheika: his Spanish is actually remarkably good. Random bits of French pronunciation (from his Stade Francais days) or Italian words (Petrarca) but mighty impressive for a guy learning in his 50s.

It helps that Argentine Spanish is heavily influenced by Italian immigration so I can see him sliding easily into it. Plus Argentine rugby was brought by the Brits so our rugby nomenclature is in English rather than French.

There is a genuine case to make that Argentina are the strongest side in the much weaker half of the draw - marginally ahead of Australia and England on current standings, and clearly ahead of Wales, Fiji, Georgia, and Japan at present. Therefore it's fair to say they only need to have one great performance in a semi final to reach a final, with all of the games before that point being fixture they should be expecting rather than just be hoping on a bit of luck to win. Their odds of circa 25/1 are certainly the best value ones in the tournament by bookmakers.

It's interesting with Boffelli becoming one of the world's best kickers because when ARG first made him first choice kicker he was very inconsistent (as you would expect, but also to a point that you'd question what they saw in him instead of the flyhalf). He's the epitome of practice makes perfect as I wouldn't trust anyone else to take a last chance saloon penalty kick. Think that improve goal kicking gave him a wave of confidence that has benefitted the other aspects of his game, turning him into the best (back) players in the world. I feel everyone on that side of the world cup draw is a potential dark horse, especially given how my lumps the other side will take out of each other. Would be a breath of fresh (Buenos Aires, if you will lol) air to see ARG go all the way in France

Im so hyped to see argentina play, I know they can hit really high but at the same time as you say im concerned of the lows (and consistensy, our biggest enemy and I mean it as a society, not only in rugby), I hope the bad experience in 2019 is present in their minds and they will be looking to go for all and repeat as you say 2007.

They say sports teams reflect the society they come from and boy oh boy do the Pumas ever. The highs and lows are the best way to describe Argentina as a whole. Once again you've summarized Argentine rugby to a T. Whatever comes I hope the boys put on a show and just run with it. I will say that every time we've had a foreign coach the Pumas have always made a quantum leap in their game: case in point when Alex Wylie was in charge back in the mid to late 90's I remember we had a really good run against big teams (including a 46-20 thrashing to England I was lucky to witness live); he gave us our first big victory against Ireland in the 99 RWC and that completely overhauled our mentality. Here's hoping to the next quantum leap in Argentine Rugby!

I've never played for an Argentinian coach that didn't scream as much or more than Cheika does, I don't think the Argentinians will have a problem with his temperament, I used to have a coach that would slap our faces really hard before the game so we get mad and use the anger to play better, and it did work, if Argentina can keep a level head and keep good discipline in the field they can win against any team, anywhere, at any time.

Spot on, Argentina have always been exciting to watch and their win against England was fully deserved. They work the ball really well in attack and are never in two minds about penalties, they take what you give them and keep the score board ticking. The problems for them are simple ones, discipline and sticking to their strengthens. This is a side who outplayed England and won but also lost to a 14 man England side (Elliot Daley red card early in the game) in recent memory. They are little all in or bust
@blueboy1788
@blueboy1788 10 ай бұрын
Think the other element they have in their favour is that there is now a ton of experience in the side. I saw a stat the other day that, in the Rugby Championship, they actually have the most experienced starting XV if picked on number of caps, something I can't imagine has ever been the case before. Obviously a lot of that side has been a part of the up & down past 10 years, but you have to imagine that wealth of caps has ironed out some of the rough edges (except Lavanini of course.....). Actually really like them to win that group & make the semis, beyond that it's gonna be tough.

As I said, in the last 4 years, the records have pulled up... - first ever loss to Argentina - 2nd loss to Arg AND record loss - record loss to Ireland - home series loss to Ireland - 3 in a row without a win v England - record loss to SA - and most condemingly,

Luciano Gonzalez and Rodrigo Isgro are two total beasts from the Argentina sevens team who are in the squad. Both made the 2023 HSBC World Dream Team, and were on absolute 🔥 winning three of six tournament finals they were in. True phenoms. Offensive weapons who will bring a real sting to the Pumas attack. I'm expecting big things from them.

That pandemic upset over the All Blacks wasnt an upset: the All Blacks simply felt they would win an easy match: and got smashed! It was brilliant! Seeing the Kiwi amigos shocked, then sulking about it. Oh wait, but it was Fosters fault!

Can we just recognise that all these teams breaking records, finally beating NZ or winning series etc... Noone has once discussed the decline in NZ rugby. Their U20's has become bang average, and national team have losing records v France, Ireland, SA and England in recent years. 90% odd win record has reduced to 70%.

I feel like they're almost guaranteed to reach the semis. I have a hard time seeing them not winning their pool, which more than likely sets them up against Wales in the Quarters. After that they are, IMO, good enough to beat any of the teams they're likely to meet in the semis, seeing as those teams are going to have a far tougher road to that stage

As a welshman I'd be happy with that draw if I'm honest. We ddont really struggle against Arg since Gatland was in charge, I think hes only lost to them once when he made 13 changes. But then I dont remember playing them in the RWC when they have an even preparation period.
