What an amazing performer Stevie Wright was, fun fact, he did this show after being in rehab for drug addiction, in 1976 he was put into deep sleep therapy at a place called Chelmsford hospital where he got 14 electric shots and came out with brain damage, several of the patients killed themselves after the treatment. Stevie was always a survivor and it took a lot of courage to get up in front of 150,000-200,000 people after going through such things, R.I.P Stevie.

This is a true story , every Wednesday at around 12 to 12.30 in summer we would play school cricket at Pennant Hills Oval as we passed the Chelmsford Hospital we would stop and talk to a guy in a bathrobe in the front of the grounds . He seemed impaired but was courteous , polite to a fault and gave a real sense he was a gentle soul a nice guy who talked to us as equals with respect and we were just 15/16 years old . He would ask us about the upcoming game and the result from the previous week , it only occurred to us years later that it was Stevie Wright when the horrors of the deep sleep therapy was Made public . His career was stellar when he was at the top of his game ....The Easybeats "Friday on my Mind" was an absolute classic ... Having the early song writing wrecking crew Vanda and Young on board galvanised their standing before they were instrumental in the early days of ACDC . It is obvious their faith in Stevie was justified despite his demons ...your clip is a testament to that . He was loved by the public who knew much of what he was dealing with and his passing mourned as a son who had tons of talent , possibly too much .

I love this performance by Stevie. He seems happy & confident & at the height of his singing & performing abilities. Earlier in the 70s he had a real air of menace & trouble but with a glint in the eye. Almost a proto-Bon Scott. Was he on speed as well? I wonder. It was big with the Sharpie culture of the time & Stevie’s music seems a fit with Billy Thorpe & bands like The Coloured Balls.

Holy-snapping-duckspit YES!! What could be better - a healthy Stevie in 1979 (the event was called "The Concert of the Decade") doing a great live version of his 1974 biggest selling Aussie single of the year, complete with the girls from Cheetah on backup (the Hammond sisters - Chrissy & Lyndsay). By the way, when Evie originally hit #1 in '74, at the time it was the longest single (at abt 11 mins) to hit #1 anywhere in the world. It was written by Vanda and Young (Harry Vanda and George Young) - 2 of Stevie's former Easybeats bandmates who after the 60's band ended, wound up as a legendary Aussie songwriting duo - George Young, by the way was the older brother of AC/DC's Malcom and Angus Young.

Matt love your comments. Stevie Wright was a teenage legend lead singer in a band called The Easybeats. They were incredible. Stevie's battle with drugs and the booze .. and his victory over addiction is a legendary story in itself. If they ever do a movie on the guy's life it would rival the Freddy Mercury story. Any writers out there ?

Harry Vanda and George Young (part of the Easybeats) wrote this song. I don't know about all the musical nuances, but this song evokes such memories. One of the first songs that ever made me cry. Stevie was a real rock idol and I love the care and attention you gave this song. 1974, I believe it was, is part of my memories and this song is strongly remembered there. The Easybeats were part of my growing up in Aus. Evie was such a momentus song, I will never forget it.

Stevie Wright (lyrics) co wrote most of the Easybeats songs, with George Young, up until Friday On My Mind. A record producer in England told him his song writing was not good enough. This sent him into a downward spiral from which Stevie never really recovered. Check out, the Easys', For My Woman, She's So Fine, Wedding Ring, Sad Lonely and Blue, Sorry, Women, In My Book, Funny Feelin', Come and See Her, Easy As Can Be. All charted in Australia as singles or double A side records. All written by Wright/Young. Guitarist Harry Vanda took over Wright's song writing duties and co wrote Friday On My Mind. They went on to have huge success for writing and producing for other artists in the late 70's and 80's. But as a teenager in the 60's, Wright's songs to me, are the most memorable of The Easybeats.

Even after all of these years, it still gives me goosebumps. This song was huge in Australia when it came out, I still have mine on vinyl from back then. One of the most beautiful, gut wrenching songs ever. Broke my heart even when I was 14. Then many years later when I had my son, I also nearly died and this meant so much more to me. My son’s father was holding my son crying while they did everything to save me. I will love this for the rest of my life thank you Stevie Wright, you legend.

Hi Mat ! At the end of ‘70, I was a teen not knowing English yet but a young musician already. This song made me attracted to music that was more on the concept kind of composition , which lends me to prog and classical later on. A little bit like Lara Fabian would take you on the road of an emotional roller coaster, this band was able to attain the level of a Broadway performance. Underestimated masterpiece.

Yes, this song is a tragic story. Part 1: Dating Evie and partying. Part 2: In love with Evie, and looking forward to the birth of their child. Part 3: Losing Evie when she dies during childbirth. In the original recording you really get a sense of the anguish in part 3 with the way he sings, and the guitar work.

Written by Harry Vanda and George Young previous band mates in 1960s band the Easybeats, massive in Australia. Released 1974 to help Stevie who was addicted to Heroin. Vanda and Young became hit makers world wide, They wrote hits for many artists in different styles. Early stuff to look for includes Good Times, Heaven and Hell , Wedding Ring , Peculiar hole in the Sky and Saint Louis many of these were covered by other artists. Stevie wrote before his addiction got to him. Vanda and Young wrote songs such as yesterday's hero and love is in the air for John Paul Young and had releases as Flash and the Pan such as Hey St Peter, they produced the Australian releases of AC DC as George Young was the elder brother of Malcolm and Angus.

Chris back then [it may have been the same in the States] Aussie bands had to be successful in the pubs [baptism of fire] they honed their craft there, be it rock, jazz, folk or whatever. Not as much but he still has that jive he had with The Easybeats! I was born in 79 but used to listen to my olds (my parents) vinyls growing up & i hated 70's. I loved the 80's & our own genre of music, pub rock, but in the last 10yrs I've come to appreciate the 70's & especially the band's we had down here. We may of never hit the international market, well the American market very much but possibly due to our own unique genre & sound but as Aussie's we are very protective of our bands & probably a bit greedy in wanting to keep them to ourselves & not share with the world like we had to with the Bee Gees, Acca Dacca & INXS. Also as funny as it is to say but the Aussie public are extremely harsh & we put down our own that have succeeded international or as we call it "Tall Poppy Syndrome". So to be accepted by the Aussie public & to succeed, meant that you'd made it. 🥰

IMHO, the reason yesterdays musicians seem better is that there was no computer - sequencing technology. There was only raw talent, apart from recording tricks. Far too many bands/musicians reply on technology today, not to mention drum machines/loops and sequencing tricks. I agree, there are great artists today, especially outside the arena of pop rock. Again, IMHO, the radio and so called top 40 is mostly crap today.

Many years later a few modern alumni got together in a tribute band called 'The Wrights' and performed this excellent cover kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5h2hdx01LzNkX0.html for a fundraising festival (our bands love them a good fundraising festival) With Nic Cester of Jet (first vocal), Bernard Fanning of Powderfinger (second vocal), Phil Jamieson of Grinspoon (third vocal), Kram from Spiderbait and Chris Cheney of The Living End (plus others i'm probably forgetting), this song is the one and only they ever record, released or performed. Bass is probably an Ernie Ball Music Man, the circular looking pickguard is a big tell. (Actually after seeing the full thing, it's definitely an ernie ball music man stingray)

Stevie Wright was a great talent who was eventually lost to a heroin addiction. He lost his career. This song was written by vanda and young specifically for wright to get him back on the tracks and resurrect his career. They were his friends. It worked but then his demons took over and he was lost again. This version is good, but, there is a clip of the sound check they did earlier in the day without the crowd that is far superior. I think he did this either pissed or off his face. It’s just not as good vocally.

Hi Matt , love your reviews of great Aussie Music. Please do yourself a favour and listen to some Doug Parkinson, he did a fabulous rendition of "Dear Prudence" by the beatles.

The studio version is better. His voice sounds fried. The performance is after his sojourn at the infamous Chelmsford Hospital.

Who's do you think you are to say negative things about singer stop ✋️ please the people that wrote this song happen to be Australia top producers of hundreds of hits they know all about music and hits because of written more hits than anyone else in Australia and Stevie Wright was from The Easybeats where vendor and young came from they also got ACDC up and rolling and a number of other Australian artists they are some of the two best songwriters ever in Australian history and you are pulling one of their songs apart what are doing here
