It’s been quite the week. A much-improved England beat an even more improved relative to their performances yet still less good Wales, leaving both sides unsure how to feel. So, what are England building, and are there positives to take for Wales?

Englands defence was incredible because of the lack of ruck challenges, which means they have more men on their feet, one mistake pass leads to a intercept try which wales licked up like a pair of balls on a dog, but apart from that England are building something but will all good things to come is that time is needed, something borthwick doesn’t have, I’m just hoping a miracle can happen in France for the red roses

Love your stuff but I think you missed the really obvious. George gave away the softest of penalties and Zamit scored an intercept try. That was all of Wales' points. England left 8 points on the field with Farrell kicking like the tighthead of Old Twatonians III. The score could have been 28 - 0 and no one could have complained about it not reflecting the game.
@olivera3365
@olivera3365 Жыл бұрын
I mean, he has explained that the intercept try wasn't just blind luck. But as a very pessimistic Welshman I do agree with that point. We have scored 27 points this championship and that is flattering to be honest. It is unacceptable and while I do acknowledge the improvements in this game to keep us in it at the 70 minute mark it does feel like we need to do *something* to start improving on our points conversion

I love Squidge but his detail-oriented approach does sometimes miss the wood for the trees. The problem is assuming that these crucial moments of initiative by players are part of some orchestrated master plan rather than just split second decisions executed by experienced and rugby smart professionals within a wider structure. Shape, tactics and analysis matter more in rugby than ever before, but anyone who has played at any kind of level knows that rugby remains a profoundly psychological game, even in the most elite tournaments. You can't plan or control nearly as much as analysts pretend.

Great video squidge and much prefer the extended full analysis. This game was not an entertaining spectacle (for most) compared to the more fluid running/passing/ball-in-hand/high scoring games but I’m glad these games exist because they demonstrate the honesty of a team’s low confidence or adjusting to new set ups. If every game is a ‘classic’ then it quickly devalues the memorable true classic games.

I did enjoy it for the two imperfect teams trying to win without the full toolkit at hand. Some times the sectacular is like the critisum of Mozart, 'too many notes'. Warrenball (a dumb but evocative term) is a blueprint for how to play winning rugby with average to middling player stocks. It didn´t work in his time with the Chiefs, ironically because it required the team to play beneath themselves. It´s sad in a way that even hardcore Welsh fans see it as the only way for Wales to play, as you suspect that will become a self-fulfilling prophecy and the wins will still largely elude them. It´s worth remembering that, in the years when they weren´t winning 6 Nations titles or knocking England out of their own World Cup (🤗), Wales were frequently abysmal; regularly thumped by the Southern Hemisphere teams, and typically shooting it out with Scotland for 4th or fifth place just above Italy (apart from the years when France were shit, when they could usually be confident of at least finishing third).

I think any team would rather win right now and hope to win later as well, than lose right now and hope to win later. If we can turn this around and win a match this 6N I think it would be great for our confidence and the atmosphere around Welsh rugby and I hope that would lead to better things in the future, especially with things (albeit painfully slowly) seemingly moving forward with the WRU and player contracts

Went in to this 6 nations believing England was the most winnable game for Wales and it seems that way at the moment. I'm not sure Italy are the type of team that we will be able to drag into a torrid game that we might be able to sneak a victory out of by the end. If we do manage, I think there is a *chance* we could pull off something like last year's France game and go on to win it, but that is more of a hope than anywhere near to an expectation. If we don't finish 6th that'll be an accomplishment. I just hope that if we do beat Italy, they don't randomly beat Scotland on the last day - for Scotland's sake and ours!!

Englands defense was so good because they were never challenged or made think. Wales endlessly sending 1 man to run at it means england will get the ball back and so they dont need to worry about risking pens, just let wales have it. Wales created nothing, scoring 1 penalty and a try that should never have happened while farrell also missed 10 points of kicks. Could easily have been 0-30 Whatever quick ball we had Williams was absolutely butchering making phillips look like dupont. So many 4 or 5 second rucks with the ball at his feet... Kicking constantly to the best 15 on the planet was utterly absurd with no one doing anything to change to vary or... anything. No dinks over the top, no kicks to touch, nothing. I'm all for finding positives but the reality is we've lost 8 in a row? Are 10th in the world and facing a wooden spoon. Warrenball was effective because it worked and won games. This is just nothing. Wales are an AI set to easy. You KNOW they are offering 0 in attack, you KNOW they arent going to carve you up and score 3 times in 10 mins. What you have to achieve as an offense is known and easy. As I say Im all for finding positives, but this was a simple exercise of containing and waiting by England. Criticisng England for lacking deception and then saying what Wales are doing well in attack is super disingenuous.

@@iteamy exactly. This isnt warrenball this is poor. 1 up runners isnt frustrating anyone, as a defender its easy and just psyching you up for a big easy hit as you know you dont need to hedge your bets.

We shall find out on the Italian game because if they cannot avenge their loss to Italy this year then they’ll learn nothing from this upcoming World Cup plus their contracts are pretty much in the wind so it’s not looking very good for some welsh players, which is a shame because as an English man I enjoy nothing more then to watch wales and England bang it out on the rugby field as strong rivals, pushing each other to the limit

One thing I noticed with the Welsh tactic of bombing it onto steward was it meant that he was often not in a position to chase back after or field the follow up kick. In much the same way that you might target the best opposition ball carrier from kick off. But instead of any tactical depth of analysis we get JD whining

Warren Gatland's focus is not on this years six nations. He has the unenviable task of trying to build something out of practically nothing for the forthcoming rugby world cup. Presently, he is looking at all his options, and if Wales get hammered a few times, so be it. Re-building is never easy.

There is a potentially very good Welsh team somewhere - but it was not on the pitch against England. The biggest problem is the forwards. Welsh pack was too full of passengers, of the starting 8 only Owens and Tshiunza were competitive. The bench improved things a little - Jenkins, Dillion Lewis and Reffell were clearly better than the starters. IMO Beard, Francis and Thomas are not even close to the required standard. Beard has a tendency to go missing as soon as the game gets hard, AWJ is too old, Tips has probably been slowed due to injuries and Faletau looks a long way short of his best. The reality is that Wales will, justifiably, be second favourite against Italy. In fact I hope Wales get thoroughly trounced so Gatland realises he needs to cut most of the old guard now
