Last Saturday, France completed the set: Under Fabien Galthie, they have now defeated every single tier one team, as they sent the Springboks spiralling towards a second successive loss. So what can we learn from these two teams in one of the best tests of 2022?

As a French fan, I agree with the analysis here, the Boks are probably the strongest team at the moment. Our coach Galthié, insists on the bigger collective experience this team has compared to us. 14 out 15 on the pitch were world cup winners and it shows. The French are building up cohesion,, lucidity to win games as well said here, and momentum but this SA side will be very hard to beat...With Ireland being strong and the AB and England probably arriving ready next year, exciting games ahead whatever happens!

One of the things I love about Squidge's videos is...the explanation about why seemingly controversial, dodgy moves (that winning French try) are not as iffy as they look. Or the breakdown of Kolisi's miraculous try. I actually think the Bok captain appeared out of a puff of smoke in mid air to score that. But that's my theory...

Honestly I think that’s what they’ve been trying, their run meters in the last 3 games would make even the AB’s blush. But no matter how much training you do, you need practice at that running game in game pressure… if boks can get confident in their running game and still maintain their physical and set piece their options to adapt to our play various teams will be second to none. One thing you didn't mention on the first French try : if you look at Mbomanbi a bit before, he miss a line throw, he's completely out and doesn't do much in defence for a bit (and what he does, he does it very late), then leaves the field for a comossion. He probably took a hit to the head a bit before, and that's probably the reason why the space is as big as it is...

AJ is the best number 10 the US have ever had. What they are lacking is cohesion. They used to get by with having big carriers in the back row (think Samu Manoa), but the rest of the world has moved beyond that through good coaching. Individual performances aren't enough to beat 'tier 2' sides any more. Look at Fiji vs Uruguay.

The Siya Kolisi try just shows how much is going on at a ruck. Siya ran past the Ref (even moving out of his way), who had his eyes on the ruck like an eagle, but only realized that a try was scored when Le Roux came up to congratulate Kolisi (as did most of the French team shown in the video). It just goes to show how difficult it is to ref a game! Intense pace, moving parts and theatrics! I'll do my best to stop getting upset by reffing errors after seeing this...

The mix up between Kolisi and Mbonambi for the French try was very much to do with the fact that the Boks had a red card, it was a numbers game at that point. Failing to point that out seems a bit disingenuous, but I know it's Squidge, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt 😅 As a Bok supporter, it's strange, but I came away from that game thinking, I'm pretty happy with that (with the WC in mind), there is a lot to build on, and I feel we only lost because of our mistakes, and feeling we had won almost every head to head battle (especially physicality), but paid for a few stupid moments (including the red card). I think with 15 v 15 for the full match, this is a very different game. But only time will tell. Thanks to Les Bleus for a great game!

Great video as always @squidge. When watching the contentious try on 0.5x speed. It looks like his knee does drop and touch for a split second on the initial move and then on the second shunt he gets over. Splitting hairs here but it was such a big point in a game we have waited many months to watch. Between 10:45 and 10:50 in your vid. Just my two cents though. On a side note, we can't be talking about officiating week in and week out. A good ref is one that no one notices and that hasn't been the case in most international matches for a while now. Can't agree more. Just want a round of international games where all referees are reading from the same hymn book. Sick and tired of this "interpretation" nonsense. Rugby has been professional for almost 3 decades, yet the officials still behave amateurishly. World Rugby needs to do 2 things, firstly simplify the rules and secondly give referees more assistance, either by introducing a second on field referee or by adding more technological assistance. I really hope they go with the rule simplification.

Hey Squidge, what do you use for your editing? The reason I ask is your audio levels jump around quite a lot. You could possibly try using a compressor or limiter on your audio to smooth it out and make it a bit of an easier listen for your viewers.

Always love your videos, but I have to wonder about the French try that you do not see as double movement. Fair enough that you state the French player's knees do not touch the ground, but his head and elbow did making him "tackled" and off feet according to world rugby laws since he is off his feet. Saw the same in yesterdays came when England was awarded the try in the 72th minute.
@darrylleeroberts
@darrylleeroberts Жыл бұрын
Exactly - both he and the ref got that call completely wrong. According to the rules, a player is deemed on the ground if any part of his body other than his feet touch the ground and support his weight. Quite clearly that French players head touches the ground long before the wriggling to cross the line. A blatant double move. Shocking that Barnes got that so wrong.

I agree with the point of the Springboks needing to forget the victim mentality. We are the most hated team in World Rugby because of Rassie Erasmus and his antics. There are so many holes in the Springbok game that are being ignored we are regressing badly with Nienaber at the helm. There are a few undeniable decisions that have gone against us this year specifically though, to a point where it can almost hide the real problems. That being that the Springboks are still living in 2019. We desperately need new management and some good PR to make sure that at least some 50/50 decisions go our way and more importantly to ensure that the game plan actually evolves. In my opinion the Springboks are the easiest tier one team in the world to beat but it's solely the immense talent of the players making sure we can hang on by a thread.

Rassie is toying with you the way he is toying with World Rugby. I watched the game on Amazon Prime in the UK where the commentator had such an anti- Bok slant that at one point he even said, "oooh, that will end in a video!". Some of us have seen the subtle changes in our game, some of us noticed how we ran more and kicked less than both the All Blacks and Australia in the RC, how the Siya try is very similar in regard to maul set up as the breakaway by Eben when he scored but was (incorrectly) penalised.. all the signs are there but the rest of the world are so focused on Rassie that they just aren't seeing it. That's fantastic! As for PR.... waste of time and money. We have been hated for decades, not only since the BI Lions series. No PR company in the world will ever stop New Zealand haters from believing that we poisoned them, or stop that Irish twat from calling for us to be stripped of the RWC title because we were roided off our tits, or stop the English twats from calling us cheaters for using the bomb squad in the RWC.... fuck them, let them hate us, let them focus on Rassie all they want. We'll just carry on evolving subtly and ambush them when the time is right.

Smoke and mirrors in the game plans and tactics this close to RWC. To think that RE is only focused on the refs and that the ability to turn this around is out of the teams hands is daft. Springboks are experimenting in these test matches.

Agreed insofar as the boks were really written off as underdogs for the last 2 games and they lost but not in rhe manner I feel some thought they would.. france's pack was supposed to destroy them...Ireland's attacking play was supposed to open the taps and demolish the boks. As a bok supporter myself I'm most happy about the more attacking minded style of play even if it is not working 100% at least it's better to watch than aimless kick chase rugby. If anyone should be worried it's France and Ireland as the pressure is now squarely on them as this was really narrow wins against a bok team.

I'm not too concerned about next year. Boks are just way more physical and rush attacking them was always gonna be hard to do, and there were still some moments where we opened up your defence. I think South Africa were very unlucky to lose this France game though. A lot of things just worked against you guys (not that I agree with Erasmus's rants). I'm actually afraid of what's gonna happen after the world cup given how bad the Fiji and A team game against NZ were. I think our no. 10 spot is gonna be very weak once Sexton leaves and the lovely style of adaptable rugby we've got will go down the shitter

It’s obstruction if someone’s in front without being bound. You can have the ball as far forward as you like obviously it’s just normally disadvantageous.

I really enjoy these Vidoes, eventhough i am totally biased. I just wish that poeple in SA realise Willies skills and realise Rassie's long game. The Rassie Documentary made this clear for me. in 5 years time we will only realise Rassie's plan, you maybe 3 year earlier, but that will be after the world cup. And i would love to see Am in Jesse Kriel's place just dont think Kriel is as good as Am.

Squidge, while I love your analysis of team tactics and how they aim to break teams down, the rules are not your area. If you are supporting your body weight with anything other than your feet, you are deemed off your feet. Why do you think jackaling players cannot lean on the tackled player when trying to steal? You can create a tripod with your feet and your head but the moment your head touches the ground you are off the feet and must place the ball.
@iabnatgeo
@iabnatgeo Жыл бұрын
I was wondering that too. The law says the player is brought to ground if he is lying, sitting or has one knee on the ground. He isn't lying or sitting. It's semantics, I know, but that's how I'd read it. But what the ref also needs to assess is: - to what extent is the ball carrier's forward momentum affected by the player bound on him driving forward and the defense pulling at him to access the ball ( both are clearly happening). Had it not been a try we have two penalties against SA including no tackle release and whatever Barnes stuck his arm out for.

I need clarification on Ruck, Maul and Scrum rules.. Seems every Ref has his own ideas of what's legal and what's not. For me there's a clear leg lift in the maul for Arendse's try in front of Barnes? And the moment when a French player plays the 9 early and no penalty is given. And forming a wall in front of a player catching a high ball, is that not obstruction? At this point I have no idea what's allowed anymore..
@JacoLuus
@JacoLuus Жыл бұрын
Great analysis again mate. One question , 11:03 Isn't his knees touching the ground? Yes I am South African so obviosly I am leaning towards double movement, and I am aware it's easy to spot in slow motion and with his body position he is not propelled of that knee like the rule suggest, but if you watch this in real time one can clearly see he was stopped twice before crawling over the line, it was not momentum like the rule suggest and if you are French you will argue his knees did not touch the ground. But he did not support his body weight and his momentum was stopped. Does this mean as long as your ass is in the air, knees not touching the ground and you are leaning on the ball in a ruck, you are allowed to crawl around a rugbyfield like a catapilar, remembering if the opposition try to tackle your legs it can be justified as side entry. To many grey areas and world rugby needs to look at it. The solution is simpler than one think, if the momentum is stopped and you cannot place the ball across the line, it's a ruck and those rules apply. Othewise we will have a lot of unhappy fans next year in the World cup. Great content keep them coming.

Around the tryline you're allowed to stretch out to score the try, on any another part of the field you'll eventually have to release the ball if you're no supporting your own body weight. So no, you're not allowed to crawl around and the try was fine.

I think teams with rush defence have put us under a lot of pressure we were used to, plus the most the Fiji game is a write off because our attack never clicks with carberry. I also reckon balacoune has something to do with it, class player but not a playmaker and never really got stuck in to the action the way Lowe does
