Squidge Rugby

3 жыл бұрын

The Six Nations resumed after a six-month break, as Ireland began their swing for the title by dismantling Italy. But just how are they playing under Andy Farrell, are Italy actually any good, and what lead to Peter O'Mahony attempting that offload?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can continue justifying staying up til 3AM to finish this to myself.

I think ultimately what's so frustrating about Italy is that they *always* seem to be in this cycle of nearly-there and not-quite-there and looking-to-the-future. Year after year it feels like they show up with a new coach, new players, new structures that just aren't quite working, and the same old defensive frailties. And we never quite get the chance to see them actually develop into a finished team. Is there a lack of continuity in Italian rugby that's hurting them? And as much as their attack structures are *possibly* interesting, what of their defence which always seems really leaky? I'm genuinely curious, as I find it fascinating how positive you are about Italian rugby (and can see where you're coming from!) and yet watching them get destroyed game after game, year after year, having not won a *single* Six Nations match in over five years, it's starting to feel a bit Groundhog Day.
@dietcab-kem6142
@dietcab-kem6142 3 жыл бұрын
However I think they have been like that since they started in the six nations, but only since Connor O'shea have they been looking properly to the future where they've had emphasis on the U20's and youth development and then to the club sides. And the current coach is also carrying on with this development.

Italy need to employ some overseas talent like most other rugby powers.The current All Black team has huge potential,also can’t wait to see the new Springbok team.South Africa defecting to the Northern Hemisphere is a huge blow to NZ and OZ.

From my point of view as an italian, this year is the first time some players outside the pro14 are called, I guess our championships are getting more serious and we are stepping up our game. However, excluding some Northern regions like Veneto and Lombardia, most of the players start at about 16 yo so we have problems with the basics and, for me, it really shows (passes and tackles mainly).
@phrankster909
@phrankster909 3 жыл бұрын
Either it needs to be a five nations or there needs to be a qualifying competition for the other European countries. From an Italian Rugby fan perspective it must be just painful if there is no change.
@silviamancinelli1099
@silviamancinelli1099 3 жыл бұрын
@@phrankster909 I do think that, even if there would be some qualifications, we would win and enter as the sixth nation. We are still the best out of Tier 2 european teams. Unfortunately the problem is inside the FIR, we have lot of beautiful talents that can't grow in here and I think that people like Polledri and Minozzi, who are outstanding talents, are pushed to do the hard work that some of the others aren't doing and they are given too much responsibility on the field (there was Hayward instead of Minozzi and we can all see what that meant on the field). I don't know if you've seen the women game, but now I see the same problems in defence while one year ago there wasn't, and if you see the data the main player from Italy was Giada Franco. We can't focus on only one/two players and leave the responsibility on them, it's even worse for the rest of the team from my point of view.

In my humble and respectful opinion, I just don't see you (or Wales for that matter) having the depth to take on a RWC title effort. You have an exceptional side, but the question is can you play 7 games in 4 weeks against progressively better opposition and win at least 6 of them? This is where England, New Zealand and South Africa have a distinct advantage over every other team, including Australia these days and with you most likely being pitted against one of them in the QF or SF, you come up against a bit of a brick wall.

@@Karma-qt4ji True that, but the Italian team should set his eyes on winning a couple of matches in 6Nations, nevermind winning it all or thinking of RWC. By the time players are accustomed to play at national level they are ready to retire

I see a lot of people say that Italy should be booted out of the 6N, but I feel that it would be a mistake for rugby as a whole. What hinders the development of this sport is the domination by a few countries that makes the outcome of the world cup more predictable. We need to help in the development of tier 2 and 3 nations in order to bring this game to the level it deserves, and this is done with these challenging tournaments. I'm sure Italy will return to winning form (hopefully this week against England).

Every year we hear stuff like "Italy are improving", they're "turning a corner" or "making real progress" and yet, every year, embarrassing multiple-try hammerings by very ordinary opposition. If South Africa are to join the 6 Nations in the future, then it should be at the expense of Italy; 20 years they've been competing at this level and for 20 years they've been lamentably shit, without a single win in the last 5 seasons (a loss against England at this point is assumed). Punt them back into the Euro Nations, give the others someone to chase and spare the rest of us these pointless mismatches.

The risk here is England spank Italy and then the France - Ireland game starts later. France are losing on the 70th minute 2 tries and 2 pens to 1 try (20 - 7), would anyone put it past them knowing they likely won't win to let in two tries.... This is why we used to insist on all the last games being played at once.
