Twenty-two years. A last-moment score saw Scotland claim their first win in Paris since their coach was at 10, and two of the opposition's dads were playing professionally. So how did Stuart Hogg's side steal the scalp, and how should the two teams assess this Championship?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can buy a tank and try to conquer Paris myself, like Mike from Spaced.

I remember in 1998 when we, Ireland, were going to play France in Paris, the build up to the game was similar. The French were taking bets as to who would score the first try, talk of hitting 50+ and a soccer match in training, fired Ireland up and they tore into France and nearly won the match,. Lesson don’t disrespect your opposition, no matter who it is.

Been anticipating this so long that I forgot about the Lions tour Also nobody is more obsessed with that defence from Chris Harris than me. I just love love how he keeps ahead of the french attackers, never drawing himself in and just waiting for the right moment. Such a great blend of intelligence and work rate. The amount of Scotland fans that still don’t see how valuable Harris is, and keep bleating about how ‘he must have dirt on Townsend for him to keep being picked’ just speaks volume over so many things

Personal favourite even though it didn't count for anything was the hit on Vakatawa. Harris no doubt knew the advantage was to France but still utter cleaved him in two, knocking the ball out of his hands. Finn did the litle pick up and ran over the line, not that it counted but was a little thing to get into French heads we weren't going to the push overs they'd expected.

The Chris Harris segment is what made me fall in love with rugby. As a centre myself it was exactly those instances which kept my playing. I was never any good with the ball, just crashed it pretty much every time, but defence was what I loved and what Chris Harris did in those minutes is what I dreamt of doing every time I got on the pitch.

I'm not a centre but I used to do a sort of faint tackle in a 2 on 1 when defending on the wing and they almost always bit and passed it making it easy to put the guy into touch. Did you do anything like this?
@vonteflon
@vonteflon 3 жыл бұрын
I switch between centre and flanker, and occasionally some other positions too. I find centre, particularly outside centre, the hardest position to defend. Aside from the technical side of covering a lot of space and attackers running at pace (in the back row you get through a lot of work but the tackles are more predictable), it’s so easy to over-commit and leave a massive hole. Harris’s positioning in these clips is exemplary - makes it easier for himself and his teammates to defend. As for the amount of ground he covered, at pace, to execute that positioning brilliance, well I wouldn’t last two minutes.

As a French, I really hope that Scotland maintains this level until the world cup, we need a strong 6 nations (5 out of 6...) if we want, any of us, to have any chance against Southern nations. Against Wales in a losing effort he was absolutely superb. His pass to Duhan to nearly win the game? Was unreal. He had a so so game v Ireland but it was nowhere near as bad as folks make it out to be. It has become a weird function of 6N rugby that any Scottish player that begins to emerge as a potential Lion or a great player? Get immediately picked apart. Squidge is guilty of it as well with Duhan. Guess who Duhan made look like a right muppet to score the winning try against? Damien Penaud yet we get a "feature" on why Duhan's defense is suspect? For perspective LRZ the winger everyone raved about? Missed tackles like it was his job to do so. He missed 8 tackles, for a Winger that is horrendous. Same with Mish and all the too small BS. Hogg gets it as well with his "defensive" question marks. Hogg misses a tackle a whole wave of "defensively questionable" crap comes pouring out. No rugby player is perfect and Finn of course isn't. Yet in a game were you need a try to win v Boks? There isn't a 10 in NH I'd rather hand the ball to.

I really feel like you overestimated the confidence of the french players. Every media in France was saying that this would be a tough game, that we shouldn't underestimate the Scots. The players themselves said that they were worried by the the scots and I think them kicking the penalties instead of looking for tries is evidence of that. Ollivon said we had a title chance which is a huge deal for a nation that hasn't won in 11 years. It wasn't an arrogant statement

Yeah I thought the reaction was strange. What was the French captain supposed to say "no I don't think we will win, I don't even want to win the trophy". Media spinning up a storm, it worked in Scotland's favour.
@vicl6030
@vicl6030 3 жыл бұрын
Came here to say exactly that. Yeah, we literally lost last year's 6N with a defeat to Scotland. Why on earth would we underestimate them now ? I know there's a thing with the French supposedly being arrogant, but come on, that is a cliché, not a framework for actual analysis. Whatever we do, we end up being painted as arrogant because it fits the pre-made narrative. French = arrogant, Italian = not serious, etc. Check facts first, then label what you notice with the appropriate word. Do not go the other way, looking for potential signs of arrogance because, come on, they're French, with a chance at winning the title, they must be arrogant, right ?
@jamesm5497
@jamesm5497 3 жыл бұрын
@@vicl6030 apparently wanting to win when you're a good side is arrogance. you're supposed to let the lesser sides win. I love +SquidgeRugby and his analysis, he's spot on things I don't notice, but indeed, France DID NOT underestimated Scotland. We know it's always a tricky game, and they play our weaknesses very well. Hats off to them, though, they deserved their victory (even if it was a stupid move by Dulin, shit happens). @@jamesm5497 "Lesser sides?" Wow... Now that's a disrespectful comment. Scotland were never a "lesser" side. They convincingly beat England (The team who beat France and kept out their own 22 for the entire 2nd half) It took a desperate tap tackle to stop Scots from beating Wales, a team who dominated the majority of the match against France and who would've won if the penalty try had been given or the final penalty not conceeded. It was so woefully shallow and and banal. I now realise that I have hours of analysis to watch here! I love watching rugby but never really played, Squidge has opened my eyes to everything that I've been missing! Added bonus phrases like "Ali Price with cheese" and the snoop drop make this channel the absolute best. Keep up the great work, and get some sleep!

since I started watching this channel, I actually (slowly) begin to see strategy in rugby. Unfortunately, I can't play myself, but I think I can get the hang of it by watching stuff like this.

Wow gotta say your analysis of Chris Harris's brilliant defence was... well.... brilliant!. For Harris to have that picture in his head and retreat until the optimal time to engage is truly epic imho.

Great vid, feel like its a little harsh on Van De Merwe, you could find a clip of pretty much every test level winger missing a similar tackle. Stockdale and Teddy do it at least once a match 😅

Maybe just a nudge to say "don't get carried away Scotland fans". VDM is lethal in attack, but not brilliant all over the pitch

@@jamesm5497 Fair enough, I've got a lot of sympathy for wingers missing tackles, I played lock and the few times I drifted out to defend near the touchline was an absolute nightmare!

Especially considering the Winger, Squidge once described as the "best in the world" (Adams) missed more tackles than Duhan during that 6N. Squidge's analysis of Duhan fell completely flat. Duhan was excellent during the Lions tour and yes even defensively.

Nah, I think (hope) Scotland is out of having linchpin players. He is a defensive beast, but if I'm honest, I'm glad Scotland are now able to demonstrate depth.
