On November 2nd 2019, South Africa won the Rugby World Cup. And yet, just two years earlier, the team was in crisis. Political tension off the field and nothing but bad news on it, finding themselves on the wrong side of countless upsets, record losses, and embarrassing scorelines. So how did Rassie Erasmus rebuild the Springboks into a team who could take on the world and unite a nation?

We went to go watch the Springboks vs Australia in Johannesburg in July 2019 where Siya was the water boy for the team. By many this was seen as degrading, but to me it was a sign of a great leader. A leader does not just lead by example, he also serves his team - something that Siya did with absolute graciousness. Afterwards he joined the Gwijo Squad (supporters who flew in from Capetown) in dance. Siya is deservedly the Springbok Captain!

I was talking with my housemate and one of the best qualities of these videos is that Squidge appreciates each team for its own merits; the Boks for their brutality, the French for their Frenchness, the Uruguayans for their passion (and being the best rugby team in the world). That kind of rugby ecumenism makes the game so much richer and more enjoyable to watch. As opposed to complaining about teams not playing rugby "the right way."

been waiting for this video for weeks and made my girlfriend watch it with me. A woman who’s opinion of rugby is that it’s an unnecessary relic of apartheid. As such you can imagine how much rugby she’s actually watched. Mid way through the video she says “ this guy is so good even I know what’s going on - and he’s funny”. This pretty much is the highest praise I can think of for your work.

Such a well deserved team to win the World Cup, I don't think even their own fans had them down to win it. Erasmus is a bloody genius and the entire Bok squad played with so much heart and passion. Thanks Squidge. As a South African who loves the game, the past few years have been really hard on the fans. When Rassie took over, we started to hope. But then we started seeing this kicking game "plan A" and most of us could not understand it. We started to win a few games again, and the fans were placated. and throughout 2018, we continued to be hesitant in "believeing again". But 2019..... oh what a year. the strategy started to make sense (thanks to some of your analysis) and you could hear the intake of breath as we won the rugby championship. But most pundits kept reminding us: "no team, that has won the rugby championship in a world cup year, has ever gone on to win the actual WORLD CUP". So we went into the world cup with most of us hoping for a world cup victory but happy with a semi final appearance. And then we lost to NZ in the opening game of our pool.... and the pundits again said: "no team that has lost a pool game has ever won the world cup".... and it just got better and better and better. The Semi final against Wales was a squeeky bum affair, but we got through it. And the best possible thing to happen was England beating NZ for us. England played their 2019 "final"in the Semi's. The week before the final, the entire UK media had written us off as runners up, and when Cheslin stepped Farrell, you could hear the UK media snapping their pencils and choking on their tea and it was GLORIOUS. As a patriotic South African, the 2019 rugby world cup, and our teams journey to become the overall victors, gives me such hope for my country. Because when we all look past our diferneces and come together as one unit, we are unstoppable! Thanks for the great video as always. and keep up the awesome work. !

As a rugby fan from the States who hopes our national team keeps getting better and better as well as our professional clubs I’ve become quite the Boks fan over the last several years. Some of my favorite players like du Tiot and Kolisi are great man. Squidge, great video man. I started watching your channel from the Lions 2017 tour analysis and I’ve been a fan ever since. Keep it up.
