Value for money. This is a huge subject that can be applied to anything in the world that is a product or service. In the watch world, value for money to you can depend on what is important to you, and what you are looking for in a watch.
Someone can buy a watch for £1500 and feel like its great value for money. (my Oris Aquis fits that category to me) A Tudor Black Bay represents "good value" at under £3000, compared to its Rolex counterparts, it is good value. But for many, nearly £3000 for a watch is difficult to attain at the moment, or ever!
You could buy a watch for £300 and be disappointed, so it's poor value for money as you aren't impressed.
Or you could buy a Chinese made watch, overlook the snobbery and be treated to a well specified watch that objectively is very good for the money, hence "good value". But does all this decent spec add up to a good watch?
Or is it just a case of throwing the kitchen sink at it, and using that as a way of selling it? Lets take a look....

I’m a senior citizen on a limited income, but I like watches! Unfortunately this limits me to buying these Chinese special watches so that I can have a variety of choices. I love the fact that I can find great little watches on a budget. Here in Southern Indiana there are few who recognize the difference between a Rolex date-just and a Cadisen copy of the Rolex. For the price difference I can buy a whole collection for the difference! Great video as always!!!

I was fortunate to buy a Rolex 16613 Sub over twenty years ago, along with a few other investment grade watches. But I also enjoy having some of these homages/micro-brands...which are terrific value for money, look great...are made with quality materials and have very good fit/finish. Based on a reliable SII NH-35A/NH-36A (or some micro-brands with ETA's or Valjoux 7750), they are perfect daily drivers and excellent for travel, the outdoors...and anywhere else one might find that an investment grade might not be appropriate for the occasion. Working from home today while wearing a SteelDive green dial/bezel "Hulk" homage ($99) with an aftermarket fully brushed sub-styled bracelet ($25). Unlike my Rolex...no risk to scratch the ceramic bezel on this baby!

I have 10 seiko dive watches and love them all. I recently bought the steeldive Willard you have here and their submariner homage which I'm wearing right now. They have completely redefined my idea of value. No R&D, design or marketing means a lot of saved money. There is no way at all a seiko turtle can compare to the Willard homage and it costs 3 times more and uses the same movement...! Staggering.

It's much easier to read than my Rolex 16030 Datejust, and instead of paying $600-$800 every few years for service, I can just buy another. For many of us, I think that we will never be able to afford the 'real' Submariners, Seamasters, Breitlings etc., but, these watches fulfil at least the visual appeal, and often the reliability as well. If the movement dies, buy another one and fit it. I personally can’t afford the service on a Seamaster, let alone the price of one. I love automatic watches. China fits the bill. Do they make me feel like I am wearing a Datejust? No. But, I wear my watches for me, not to impress others. Plus, I like modding watches, and when asked 'who makes that watch?', the answer is...me. Far more kudos.

Well when you go that high, you see things as investments and watches are no exception. How much I can make from the Rolex GMT Master II Limited Releases or Patek's Nautilus etc.? If you splurge so much on a watch at this price bracket and you don't care about resale, then you are a fool. Which is part of the appeal of cheap homages and Chinese watches, they are entirely guilt-free

Go for the ones with a Seiko NH35, sapphire crystal & the look you want. As long as you don't mind the name on the dial, you'll have a reasonably good watch. The divers are generally only diver style watches with 100m or less water resistance (my PD1651 is actually sealed really well when I took it apart to remove a dust speck) & poor lume but certainly look the part & make awesome beater watches.

Excellent video. Over the years I have purchsed Seiko Sumo, PADI Samurai and a ProSpecs Turtle. All had issues with either a misaligned bezel ring, chapter ring or in the case of the Sumo a substantial scratch on the Hardlex glass. I sent all 3 to a Seiko watch modder and he did excellent work. Obviously with the original price of the watches plus the mods this came to a pretty penny. Recently I purchased the Steel Dive in your video for $138 USD and it is perfect. Not a single QC issue. I love Seiko divers, but at the current prices, I will not gamble that there will not be any CQ issues. With Steel Dive, I am not at all that worried.

I had a grail watch - seagull 1963 sapphire. It deserves the praise, in my opinion. ANd a SteelDive is on the way, NH35, sapphire, w/e, for a price that has value. QC I can remark on when I get it. On the other hand, the incredibly inexpensive array that are marketed as 'quality' that are overpriced and 'luxury'. Watches that lack value can even be made elsewhere, or not.

Objectively comparing materials, details, movements, etc. from something like a top tier Chinese special or a microbrand then it's hard to see the worth in spending over about $2,000 tops on a watch. Yes, for more money you get better polishing, more faces, finer brushing, etc. But I'm not convinced that translates to a more robust, "better" built watch. It's prettier, but it doesn't necessarily make for more _watch._ Yes, original designs cost money and take effort and skill to produce. But how many times over has the design of the Rolex Submariner or DateJust or an AP Royal Oak been paid for? These designs have barely changed in 50 years but the prices of the products hasn't fallen a cent.

Sometimes you get stinkers with poor design and worse QC, other times you get decent homages that so a really solid job without the financial commitment; lastly you occasionally get an absolute diamond that turns out better than the actual watch it's supposed to be based on. I bought a Steeldive Willard for £80 in the sale and it's better quality and spec than the average mid-range Seiko diver, not least the turtle range. Ali-Ex can be a minefield, but if you take brand snobbery out of the equation then sometimes it's more embarrassing to be wearing the original, from a value perspective.

Hi Dan. Interesting topic and one which you could argue till the cows come home..I guess value for money is a personal thing and what one person may see as really good value for money someone else may not. For example, I recently got the latest Lorier Neptune, and at around £500 imported to U.K., it's not a cheap watch, but OMG it's simply stunning. But some would probably say that it's not good value for money with a Miyota movement in and an acrylic plexi crystal. I really like Steeldive, I think their watches are really good at the right price and the flieger one I have is very good. I think Pagani Design have had their high point with the 43mm Sub homage and the Daytona mechaquartz, possibly you could also include the Yachtmaster homage as well, but since these there have been issues and problems. The quality control on the GMT and the 40mm one you have has not been as good, and little quirky issues have started to creep in. As for the ultimate Submariner homage I think the San Martin comes pretty close, along with the Steinhart Ocean One and also the Phoebus PY007 but these last two are significantly more expensive and with Phoebus, really hard to get new as they are always sold out - maybe that says something about that watch!

I'm a tinkerer. I like the idea of all the replacement parts for Parnis and Bliger watches. I can change bezels, crystals and hands and change lumes and customize faces for cheap . I wouldn't do that on my dad's Datejust or a real Rolex Sub myself. It's a nice, inexpensive way to learn about movements and servicing and you end up learning why the high end luxury watches cost so much from messing around with loud, Chinese, low qc movements. You also gain an appreciation of how good the value is on some of these are.

I have a few subbie's, I think the best was a brand new Invicta pro diver in the blue and gold I snagged for £20, I have just bought a Ben Nevis "turtle" homage for the amazing price of just under a tenner and I got a £2 voucher for next purchase with the intention if the rubbishy lozenge quartz goes I will shove in a Miyota 2115. I am not a fan now really of the subbie, despite it being a Royal Navy design which set the market for diver watches ever since, I have got my eyes on a Cougeot in rose gold, coffee dial and bezel I quite like but any new watch has to fight me wearing my Russian and Soviet pieces and given a choice between an ancient Vostok Amphibia or one of my subbie homages, the Amphibia wins every time.

Good to hear that Steeldive is made in the same factory as Heimdallr ... I was up in the air about whether to go for the Steeldive or Heimdallr Captain Willard. Steeldive is about $30-$35 cheaper. I have heard good things about both brands.

But you buy them ,they are prohibitably expensive to get serviced. Resale low. Quality issues ? What we can't establish yet is how many years can be got out of them. I have a Cadison 1032, a bliger sub, an invicta sub and a parnis. I believe they are trying to buy a share of the lower end market by selling low.

Ginault Ocean Rover hand built in USA is the best Rolex super homage, but not dirt cheap. IMHO, the best part of a homage is capturing the design spirit of an age and not about duplicating an exact look. For example, the French brand, Baltic somehow captures the best of Blanc Pain and earliest Rolex/Tudor but charts a new course. The smaller lug width Baltic uses creates the evocative look of the 60s. In my opinion, Baltic is heading in the right direction. Just some thoughts. Note: Sounds like Paris, not “penis.” You guys are too funny. Everything is perspective, I guess :)

Great review! I understand they're decent quality but I hear you about the Parnis name... Easier to just move on to the next "branded" one, which would be virtually identical and more than likely made in the same factory; and not be named something close to "penis" or "phallus". No offense intended to any who owns one. It's just me... "Nice watch! What kind is it?" "It's an err...uh... Parnis." "A what?" "It's got an "R" in it!" I bought a San Martin 6105 homage recently and am blown away by the quality of it. Incredible watch for just over $200.00! I have a Steeldive on the way too. The Chinese are unbeatable on specs for the money!

It's amazing how powerful branding really is. I also think a product that has been designed and invented to then be manufactured elsewhere is acceptable too. Here in the uk, a Dyson Hoover is designed and developed in the uk (at the moment) then made elsewhere, because making it here would not be as profitable! Trouble is, mr Dyson is a billionaire, so could probably afford to not be quite so filthy rich and celebrate making the products on the uk too!

I bought a Cadisen 8097 from AliExpress for 76€ (about 83 US$) and it's an incredible value for money, high beats premium movement, double sapphire glass, double deployant clasp etc... Wow! Perfectly polished case, no defects at all, except for the leather strap, I like the clasp but the genuine leather is all but genuine... I'm going to buy a better strap for 10-20€ and use it with the original clasp. Oh, I forgot (this is just luck) it gains less than 1 sec per day on average. I cannot believe it cost that price, its much better on the wrist than in videos or photos. I also bought during AliExpress 10th birthday sales a Seagull Ocean Star Inter Milan Commemorative Edition (Internazionale FC made 3 Commemorative sea-gull watches for its 110th birthday via their Chinese property, Suning) a GMT diver's watch with a high quality but... It's stuck at the customs, I don't know if it's because of the covid 19 or they have just made some mistakes with the export documents, I hope it will pass the check eventually, but I ordered it 3 months ago, I'll give them 2 more weeks before asking for a refund, but I want my seagull, not a refund. I paid some 260€,about 285 US$, it's an incredible value for money in theory. I don't buy copies or homages. Ps: sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker, I studied English leterature but never really spoken it. 😁

Chinese watches aren't really good for collecting. Find one you like and you can afford. Maybe buy a couple more if you want. Then you can be done with it. The watches have almost no residual value. They are just for fun. If you don't have much money you can afford to own one of these watches. My favorite happens to be Vostoc. You can find your own favorite. I would not enjoy handing over a large amount of money for a wrist watch. I don't have the money to use in that way.

Not knocking the watches you featured in this video, I had a Steeldive SD1970, pukka watch +2 SPD day in, day out. Gave it to my nephew and it continues to maintain great time keeping. Outstanding lume too. My own experience is that you can get something much better for around £150. Seestern Sub 300 for example, is a really well made watch, head anyway, bracelet looks great but doesn't have the best articulation, although on wrist that's not an issue. You can always change the bracelet... You can pick up some of the San Martin watches for around the £150 mark too, I think what you get for a little extra money is more consistent quality. Side by side with a £500 Seiko (which will most likely have the same movement if they're both automatic) the Chinese watch will put the Japanese watch to shame. Double your budget again to £300 and you can have a solidly made, quality case with something Swiss powering it ( got a very nice Heimdallr Captain Willard homage with an ETA 2824-2 movement for £250 a couple of years back) Whilst I appreciate the hard wearing ceramic bezel insert, aesthetically I prefer aluminium, many of these Chinese brands will make small changes like that if you ask them. Great video Dan, thanks.
