In a season of amazing episodes, this one was an absolute masterpiece. And the fact that we never know if it was Mizu's husband or mother that betrayed them makes it hit all the harder.

Completely agree, I also like that it was Mizu's unresolved self-esteem issues that didn't allow her to actually try and figure out who was telling the truth

@14:27, fully agreed. @15:24, also agreed. Alas pride is often times a man's greatest weakness. A spouse is supposed to be someone who you can trust wholeheartedly, especially considering they can slit your throat while you sleep. So why should it matter that they can kick your butt in a fight? If anything that should be a bonus. Dude was a weak man. I think he was the one who sold her out. Her mom had months to betray her after they cut her off from her opium, but they show up shortly after her husband lost their fight and went to go see his lord? Poor Mizu.

Another perspective: Although he did ask her to show him her skills, he also asked her to stop once he felt it was going too far. She didn't. Then she held a razor sharp blade to his throat and thought it was sexy. Although some men would perhaps love this, I don't think it's entirely strange or showing bad character for him to be deeply shocked and scared.

@@jachyra9Don't be ridiculous. This isn't a historical documentary. In the show Blue Eye Samurai, swords are very clearly absurdly sharp.

Episode 5 was a masterpiece. I felt my heart drop when Mikio turned away from Mizu when the armed men came for her. Literally most people's worst nightmare; to allow yourself to be vulnerable and bear your soul to someone you love/respect, only for them to take advantage and betray you.... Anyways, I mostly think that the mom betrayed her and that Mikio was being a coward in that moment. As we all know, drug addicts will do anything to get the next high and Mizu's mom may have held back until she realized that Mizu fell out of favor with her husband, which put their lifestyle in jeopardy.

There's a lady on KZfaq who is also a psychologist and had a really good argument for her husband being the culprit based on his behavior - central to which was th fact that he was unsurprised by the arrival of the soldiers.

Yeah I can definitely believe he could have done it. But I could see her mother doing it too. She did allow Mizu to believe she died for years and her mind was addled by addiction. It's a sad case no matter who did it

Without going into all the pros and cons of which of Mikio or her mother betrayed Mizu.... the most tragic answer would be neither.

I love Mizu, and her husband was awful for calling her a monster, but we have to agree that Mizu also f-up in the spar with Mikio, he said stop and Mizu put a blade to his neck, he was understandably upset. I just feel terrible for her, the two people who she was supposed to trust the most betrayed her, it's almost imposible for her to trust people now :'(

Also that line about losing his spine when he lost his title. She wanted to goad him into the fight either not realising that she is picking at his weakest spot or worse, not caring. She wanted to show off and if it took attacking his greatest source of shame and tragedy, so be it. I'm not at all defending his response (he did take the bait and fight back) but it does highlight how Mizu was already broken and already showing a callous streak.
