Hi! I'm Shaniya but I use the moniker Shanspeare on KZfaq. I'm 23, use they/them pronouns, and love all things pop culture! My channel has a lot going on: think Shakespeare meets Baz Luhrmann meets insufferable jester in a relevant but silly costume. I have a bachelor's in English Professional Writing (and basically Literary Analysis--long story) which aids me in the creation of my content. Above all, I wish to emphasize teachability and critical engagement through a fun lens.

TikTok isn't ruining art, it's just ruining the way books are advertised. More and more authors care about spicy scenes and tropes, even if it doesn't fit the story.

I also hate the "Trust The Process" thing. EVERYONE EVERYWHERE while doing anything mildly unpleasant to the eye is like "trust the process". B**** I don't need a warning. I don't expect something that ends beautiful to be beautiful 100% of the time of production, and neither should you. Puberty should have taught us that. You might end up a beautiful 20yo, or a beautiful 30yo or older, even though you were an ugly duckling as a teen or an ugly baby. My cake WILL BE an amorphous blob before I put it in the oven. My makeup WILL BE making me look like I threw flour on my face before I finish it. My drawings WILL BE messy and unnatural and dirty OR WHATEVER ELSE because I'm STILL DRAWING. And none of those has an obligation to be perfect by the time they're finished or any moment before that.

Actually I feel the opposite. I think this comes off as a bit unhinged. If "trust the process" doesn't apply to you, then that's cool. that's chill. Some people feel insecure about something not looking perfect at first. Yeah, it definitely sucks. When it comes to concerts like that, people going there should already know the music or at least be willing to appreciate all of it instead of just part of a song. In the alternative community, I have heard of people going to concerts of bands they don't know, but that type of behavior is quite different because these people are searching for new music and also supporting small artists at small venues. My biggest issue with booktok is that the books that get recommended are all the same. They mostly fall into two genres: sexy dark contemporary romances and sexy dark light fantasies. There’s nothing wrong with these genres, of course, but where’s the variety? It’s a bit disheartening for me as a budding author. I write high fantasy and I know having social media is a pretty good way to get your book out there, but like… unless TikTok’s taste change, I and many other authors who write genre fiction that’s not romance will not see any traction on the biggest book advertising platform.

one of my problems with booktok is how since a lot of people have only been reading y/a romance (not everyone does that). but now people have horrible reading comprehension. for example, one novel that is misrepresented on booktok is lolita. i have seen so many people thinking it’s an actual romance novel, and they take everything hh says at face value, so they think “no, it’s not abusive, they love eachother.” edit: i want to clarify that what i meant by y/a romance was things like 365 days, colleen hoover, etc… y/a and romance are not lesser genres, there are many very talented y/a and romance authors. it’s not only a problem with those genres, there are those problems with all genres of media.

I've seen people who are anti Nabokov because they think *_Lolita_* is endorsing the narrator's actions and contributes to the culture of overs/xualizing teen girls. They completely missed the point of the book and ignore the fact that Nabokov was a survivor himself

@@s29nv1sr1 yes, that’s exactly what i mean. it’s so frustrating when people misunderstand and mischaracterize the novel. i remember seeing a quote from nabokov himself saying that he didn’t want dolores on the cover because that would contradict what the story is about. i think a part of the misunderstanding of the novel is due to the 60’s film, but it’s also a lack of comprehension, and that saddens me.

this makes me wonder what side of booktok you’re on because I’ve seen a lot of pretty popular videos addressing the fact that Lolita isn’t something that should be romanticized, and that the author fully intended for Humbert to be a villain. If anything, I’d say that the whole “reading comprehension not being a thing” in relation to this book originated on tumblr about a decade ago. Attributing the misinterpretation of this book solely to tiktok feels wrong.
@wyldstallyns__
@wyldstallyns__ Жыл бұрын
@@riley9703 i should clarify that it’s not booktok as a whole. there are plenty of people who are passionate about literature and analysis of novels. the problem is the “book girlies” who make reading colleen hoover (and other similar authors) their entire personality. those type of people are the ones who mischaracterize lolita and other similar novels because their minds are used to romance novels with no deeper meaning. sorry for the long message, i hope it makes sense.

It makes no sense that you would blame teens only reading romance and y/a to the reason why Lolita gets misinterpreted and sexualized. Romance and y/a are not less intelligent genres with no deeper meanings and people who read them don’t have bad reading comprehensions. The problem with Lolita has been happening way before TikTok with the movie and whatever Lana del Rey was doing. And I’ve actually seen more people on tiktok addressing the problem with Lolita then contributing to it.

I think a problem is anti-intellectualism and that short-form media encourages it, challenging art requires time and cannot effectively be summed up in a snappy decisive hook, allowing for nuance and multiple interpretations is important. The way a piece is “sold” can cause problems for experiencing it as well, people can read for the Hook and put blinders on to other concepts the work has to offer or be disappointed by “false advertising” (as well as judging pieces by their own current personal sense of morality rather than being interested in the context of the piece’s creation or even internal context and engaging with the differences)

Also about booktok: There are different sides of booktok and depending on what posts you interact with your fyp changes. Ppl that say “coho is the only author on booktok” def have a very one sided fyp and interact with one type of post: coho slander/ commenting on coho vids. I have been really feeling this shift in music particularity in the metal scene. I went to see Bad Omens recently. I learned the day of the concert that they had a song blowup on Tiktok. While it’s great that Tiktok is getting a lot of people into the scene, that crowd definitely felt off. I love talking to people at concerts, asking who else they listen to, finding new bands from other people and listening to the opening performances. The audience during the openers were…dead…hardly any hype or cheering, and I felt so bad for them. The mosh pit had people falling down and not being picked up as quickly as they should be. And of course when they play Just Pretend, the song that blew up, all the phones went up. I don’t want to point fingers all on Tiktok and say this is all their fault, and that there weren’t already existing problems in the community beforehand, but it does make me feel some type of way about where this scene is going. I find most metalheads are actually very passionate about music and there for a great time. We’re also usually pretty happy that metal isn’t mainstream, since we constantly get shit on for our music taste, and it’s become our little wholesome community where we all just kinda get each other (Not to mention it’s so easy to go to concerts cause tickets are so cheap). All I ask of anyone getting into the music from Tiktok to please explore the artists’ discography. If you’re going to a concert, learn proper etiquette for the artist and the crowd. It’s not about how you bought the ticket and gave them money. They’re artists, and they want to perform more than just a few seconds of one song, because they have so much more to give than that. Newcomers are always welcome in the community. We just ask for respect for the artists and for the fans who have been in this community for many years.

I think the main problem I have with tiktok is it's absolute and complete control over the music industry.. Tiktok can be great for discovering new artists and helping grow followings but at the same time they completely devalue the artists' contribution. As an artist myself, I understand how much work gets put into everything, into going on tours, writing music and so on, so when the people that come to your shows sing only one verse of a song you wrote and know absolutely nothing else, it hurts as an artist. I've also been told that i should "dumb down" or simplify my music so that it can become a tiktok trend and i think we just need to be wary of how tiktok affects our consumption of art. We don't have to write it off completely but i would also like to see music popular on tiktok but not have it define and dominate the industry, thereby forcing artists to conform to a 15 second trend.

I think it’s interesting to see that Colleen Hoover’s writing is portrayed as uniquely problematic when 50 Shades of Grey became extremely popular to the point of becoming a movie series. You’re totally right about it being emblematic of a larger systemic issue. On twitter I see so many claims that Gen Z, especially on tik tok, is uniquely anti intellectual and often similar to some criticisms of the book tok recommendations, it is hidden elitism. I wonder sometimes that certain things being visible to everyone on the internet makes a problem seem as if it’s worse than it truly is. Before if a teenager said they didn’t care about doing any deeper analysis of a book, it would stay within their friend group. There was no way for other likeminded teens to signal their agreement. Now, it is visible on the internet for thousands of like minded peers across the world to relate. Also, 1) your costume is so cool 2)you would not let those baby ⚽️⚾️ go. but that’s a very “wtf” type of thing to write about so I understand.

Tho Idk that I’d agree wholeheartedly with the assertion, I think one thing that can be said about tik tok (perhaps social media in general) is that it puts a lot more emphasis on vibes sorry I meant ✨vibes ✨than it does the actual contents/details of a piece of art. Hence ppl can go to a Steve Lacy concert not knowing the lyrics to even his biggest song cos it’s about the overall ✨mood ✨ not the actual content and the latter arguably isn’t particularly necessary for the former Oh and as it pertains to booktok, I’m a time that is so plagued with nostalgia and looking back to the past, I think, tho it has its flaws, it’s great that modern books are being championed. It helps dispel the idea that there’s nothing worth reading from recent times.

i have really complicated feeling about the term “anti-intellectualism” becuase of the amount of times i’ve seen it used to either downplay the importance of contemporary media and/or be classist and elitist. i saw people on twitter ranting about teens on tiktok who were saying analyzing art is pretentious and art should be self explanatory- and while i do agree those are pretty bad takes, i also can understand where the kids are coming from. like we can’t ignore the art worlds actual problem of being pretentious, and how even today there’s still a lot of inaccessibility to the “real” art world. but these people on twitter were looking down on these TEENS as if they’re the reason for all societal issues just bc they might be jaded on the subject. but there’s countless other times i’ve seen people use the term “anti intellectualism” to put themselves on a pedestal and call the rest of us ignorant and stupid just because we don’t go to sleep cradling an emily brontë book every night

So here's the thing I feel about the elitist vs anti-intellectualism debate- while on every side of it you're going to have large amounts of people essentially throwing around buzzwords to defend an emotional reaction they have to feeling called out (same in all internety debates) the idea that theres some great divide between the institutional intellectuals and the ordinary, un-prentious folk is built on a lot of fallacies. Art and education about art is more wildly accessible and easier to create than any other time in history. If you're online having debates about art under a video talking about art, you're already proving that you're in a position to begin to engage in critical readings and criticism of art. The key word is begin- comprehension and criticism are skills. Like any skill, you need to work on them. That does NOT mean paroting established critics - and I'm not just talking about some college professors or snobby article, I'm also talking about twitter hot takes and you tube videos- both can be equally good or bad. It means practising, like any other skill- reading a lot, engaging a lot, and often stopping yourself from making knee jerk reactions. If you like something or dislike something you have to understand why. If other people like or dislike something, you have to try to understand why. It's not about studying one text in isolation, it's about context- within the works medium, genre, cultural and temporal origin, and outside it, and also with real life. If you're legitimately intrested in this stuff, theres not a whole lot stopping you assuming you have any free time and an internet connection- yes obviously free time is often a luxury but plenty of people have a wealth of free time (and a wealth of everything else) and still manage to be anti-intellectual. If you're NOT intrested in it enough to bother, that's also fine. No ones obliged to, or can, take part in any hobby or career or learn every skill because that's not how life works. But you cant pretend you're as good or better at a skill that you havnt practised as someone who has- your personal emotional response and opinions are valid, but that's all they are- personal opinions.

but on the term of music, i wholeheartedly believe tiktok is ruining the music industry for upper and new coming artists
@luckyxxxxk
@luckyxxxxk Жыл бұрын
Not really. The music industry has been going down since 2015. However, a lot of things factor into this such as: streaming, getting rid of the training system, companies wanting to make quick money and the public culture of consuming music has changed just to name a few. TikTok is just another thing adding to another an ongoing problem.

What you don't see is that while booktok is increasing overall sales for the publishing industry, these sales are for the large part from Amazon, which, if you didn't know, is HORRIBLE for the bookselling industry. Amazon is driving independent bookstores and even Barnes & Noble out of business, and booktok has only expedited their impending monopoly. It's pretty bad.

In these times where short form content is the most effective way to get eyes on your art, it can feel a bit daunting to be an artist of any kind. But there are definitely still people who seek out long form videos, listen to entire albums, and appreciate a piece of art beyond the 30 second process time-lapse. It can feel like the world is moving faster and faster, especially with how quickly things become viral and fade into obscurity and I think that for people like me who were raised with the internet almost always available, remembering to slow down is going to be really important for our health and for how much we enjoy the art around us. Good art deserves our full and prolonged attention and we deserve to fully soak it in too. I hope everyone is doing well and I hope Shanspeare can find more joy in making videos for us to watch.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. As someone raised in the same generation with internet always available, these are problems that a lot of us struggle with. And the way to fight that shrinking attention span is to do things like you are saying, to watch long form videos, to listen to entire albums. It is something that I do attempt to do as someone who appreciates art as a whole, and especially music, and it is a struggle sometimes but it's worth it.

Just a thought, maybe TikTok is making ppl finally realize the media being pushed is mediocre 🤷🏽‍♀️ and they are sick of it. Which actually pushes ppl to actually seek out media they like or demand better quality in the art they consume. I see more and more ppl buying physical books and are wanting a ppl to make albums again and want to buy CDs. So this might be a good thing good thing to an extent. But hey I’m just a baby millennial who likes to own physical copies of things. So this all this might be a stretch 😅

I still arugue that pandemic spolied us when it comes to consuming media. With everyone at home, there were very few ways to entertain yourself. We kept demanding more media, to keep us entertained and the same fast paced environment has not gone away. Netflix needs to constantly keep up with binge culture, content creators were constantly pressured by fans to upload more, and music production was on demand. We are so impatient now. And all these industries are industries as you said so their focus is money which puts pressure on their staff and leads to burn out. It's wild out there

this is so interesting. I've been getting into haiku lately (I'm actually of japanese descent so not just a weird weeb ok?) and I find it so interesting that it's a very old traditional form but would work perfectly for today. it's so short and simple but with very strong imagery and honestly just perfect for today. I'm surprised it hasn't exploded on tiktok or other social media yet. most haiku are shorter than most twitter posts and would go perfectly over an aesthetic picture (again another old traditional art form) or short clip.

I hate sounding like a gatekeeper, BUT, people buying tickets to see an artist based on a 10 second song clip is running up concert prices. On top of that, once they see the artist/hear that ONE song, they LEAVE. AND IT IS SO DISRESPECTFUL TO THE OTHER PEOPLE ON THE TOUR. This happened recently with Pierce the Veil on I Prevail’s tour and I hate it. Don’t go to concerts without at least trying to hear other discography from whoever you’re going to see.

super excited about the decision to have some more scaled back videos mixed in with your ones tbh; I have a lot more time + attention span to listen to podcast-style content and I often find myself waiting to watch video essays bc I'm waiting for a time where I can pay full attention to all the effort that goes into the visuals of video essays. also just love more laid back stuff like this, especially when someone's making a mix of elaborate and more low key content -- it's almost comforting to watch in a way more produced video essays aren't. Like watching a documentary about a subject vs listening to your prof go off on a tangent about that same subject. 👌👌

This might sound weird but I really hate booktok reccomendations specifically. The point of a reccomendation is to tell you what about the media you found meaningful and loved, but tiktok videos are so aesthetic over substance that every single rec ive seen has been like "books with angry but hot brunette peach fuzz you should read!" and its literally the Most Unhelpful Thing Possible. It makes me weirdly frustrated
