Knowing what to choose and the pros and cons of each is important when getting into animation, and honestly is more complicated than animating in my opinion. Heres the best breakdown I could think of
00:58 Selecting a rig
01:10 Analog Rig
03:17 Digital Rig
04:20 Checking specs
06:51 Options for a desktop
07:57 Drawing Tablets
08:48 Screen Tablets
09:35 Drawing Pads
11:04 The truth
12:25 Recap

This video literally saved me. I have had a 3ds XL for ages but nothing to use it for recently, and learning that flipnote is solid for roughs and such and about to leave the legitimate software scene was well timed - just below two months away from the cutoff! Thank you.

I got recommended your third video on the topic and oh boy, i don't understand how underrated are you, i've been scared of animating for a while But i want to, and if i'm being honest i feel like i will give it another try now. So You now earned another subscriber man. (I shall now proceed to coment E on the other 2 videos to maybe give them a boost on the algorithm bc i feel like more people should watch this)

I remember my first animation...it was on paper. But I didn't know any better... It was a parody of the G1 _Transformers_ opening sequence (which gives you an idea how long ago this was) using poorly-matched parody versions of the original robot crew. All in all it was about 500 frames, was animated on what I now know to be "on ones" ( _Exposure sheet? What's that?_ ), and was shot using a Connectix QuickCam hooked to a 486 laptop (okay, that _really_ tells you how long ago this was). Oh yeah, I should mention that I also deviated significantly from following the opening shot-for-shot because I wanted to play with making 3-D camera movements around the robots as they did their thing (i.e. "compensating for something") because I was fascinated by such things when they cropped up in animated shows at the time (look up some of the transformation sequences in _Turbo Teen_ and _Centurions_ -- they *really* stick out as 'blowing the budget moments'). I'm not sure what experienced more pain -- me, or that laptop...I seem to remember it taking several hours to compile all those frames into an MPG file (no audio, though) so it was probably the laptop. A minor miracle considering the era. A year later (evidently not learning my lesson because teenager-hood), I did the same thing for the second-season opening. This time I stayed close to a shot-for-shot parody and "only" amassed about 230 frames to do it. Since locating those files a few years ago I performed a framerate adjustment with the intent of putting them up on KZfaq for posterity. Someday I might even get around to uploading them.

Just a minute in the video and I already love that you talked about paper animation. Instant sub! :) Not a lot of people recently have talkes about Animating on paper nowadays, So I appreciate you bringing it up in this video, As someone who animate on paper. Earned a sub! :) Also, Do you know any animation productions today that are animated on paper but scanned and colored digitally? NJ

Yeah of course! Its super important to understand your options for animation. That I know of that isnt a huge animation studio? I think knights of the light table still rough out everything on paper, then clean it up digitally.

When mentioning even 3DS but nobody ever mentions FlipaClip. In my opinion, it's the best way to get into animation. you'll just have to get used to drawing with your fingertips (unless you buy an s pen). Android phones aren't very much expensive , almost everybody have it , and the free(mium) app ain't going anywhere. At least this is the way I got into animation.

theres display protection that feels like paper they say... idk if it would work on a drawing tablet... only for certain surfaces... so dont do it... would be cool though if they had it for drawing tablets as well!

It gives it the tooth of paper, but the tablet still has latency and lag. On top of the nib never truely being 1 to 1 from the tip to the screen. I have it on my cintiq!

The reality of animating and especially learning animation is that its always gonna be a grind. Animation has really helped break down everything into smaller digestible pieces to make everything not seem as insufferable. My suggestion would be something as simple as bullet pointing what you would like to focus on first. Because of course you want to learn to animate (duh) but maybe you want to learn have to make someone walk a certain way, make a ball feel a certain way, make hair blow in the wind a certain way. Listing things out has helped me a lot and it may also help you a lot because then it wont seem like your in an ocean floating aimlessly but like youre in an ocean floating TOWARDS an island and hopefully floating towards more concrete beyond just finding land. Does that make sense?

Animators survival kit by richard williams and Disney's the illusion of life. twitter.com/Tlauz_ani kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZZhh7J-s6ycgZc.html This 5 part series will also you help understand the very basics of traditional animation These will be your best bet, but they can only show you so much without having an actual apprenticeship if you really want to paper up. They all approach animation very differently as well, so what may ring for them may not ring for you. If were talking about just animating in general Watch my how to actually animate video and my animation is visual music video :D
