Hi, I'm Ryan Wexelblatt, LCSW aka "ADHD Dude". I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, School Social Worker, Certified ADHD Clinical Services Professional and a Dad.

This 💯 explains why I always hung out with boys... I couldn’t (and still can’t) keep up with the female communication. Thank goodness I can help my ADHD boy through this with your help.

Yes, I've had other women tell me that as well. I think it's particularly hard for girls who have slower processing speed and auditory processing difficulties.

WOW! Thank you for bringing this into light. Im a (female)speech and language pathologist that works with mainly boys at my school. I’ve been saying this for years but admittedly, we dont get training in social skills as it pertains to boys. You’re absolutely right that we need to make conversation natural. Otherwise, what’s the point of intervening if we aren’t making things better. I actually started watching this channel to find ways to help my son and I am constantly blown away by your content. Keep up the great work!

This makes me wonder if ADHD is more normal than abnormal. Maybe boys are just wired differently and have different needs. All boys are pretty much like this. Thank you for helping me understand my boy

Thank you so much!! I have a 5 year old who was diagnosed with ADHD last year and ODD vs DMDD this year. It’s really been rough as a single mom trying figure out which way to go when navigating social norms of boys. Of course the therapists and grandma want him to socialize one way, but I think some of their expectations are unrealistic for a school aged boy! This was very helpful.

Thank you for this. We had our son in a social skills classes. He made friends but didnt learn anything. The female facilitators just complained about my son and other boys not listening or making "inappropriate" comments. He was excited to to go to see friends but we hated hearing from the facilitators after.

The ones doing your son's group probably didn't really have any understanding of how to engage boys or relate to them. These groups can be profitable which is why people run them.

First time dealing with ADHD and my son's biggest issue is social. Grades well he never gets below a C. He's 14. I am so glad you said to force them into some type of activity. My son does Marching Band and while he likes it, gripes that he's tired, hot, sore, would rather be home relaxing playing games etc.... Like you said make them pick an activity thru the school they can do. He doesn't do sports because while he is athletic and fit, he does not have a competitive drive. So band it is. And the advice about taking the video games away from the 15 year old and making them do a school activity, I couldn't agree more and I've been doing that. This is really reassuring I'm on the right track with my kid!

I have adhd, and im really trying to listen to you so i can help my adhd son, and even more, my granddaughters. but i cant hear you, because all im hearing is "this one time, at band camp.." 😢

Unless I specify boys, nothing here at the channel is gender-specific. None of the content is my membership is gender-specific at all. I am the only person in the world (to my knowledge) who specializes in social skills for boys with ADHD, thus this video.

i’m a 57 year old female that has all these issues. no social skills don’t reciprocate naturally but hv to think oh they did this i need to do this. i was not socialized in my early years didn’t hv siblings until i was 6 years old but your methods makes a lot of sense. i can interact appropriately for a few minutes but working everyday with others is a struggle. Am i too old to learn? i have slow processing. i can learn im book smart but not hands on doing things. i don’t hv a life and very few friends.

As a mom of a son with ADHD, thanks for explaining how women often fail to coach their sons in social settings. That makes a lot of sense. Also, post-Covid...thanks for not focusing on Covid-related topics.

My seven year old boy doesn’t always catch when someone’s trying to be his friend or doesn’t know how to continue the conversation and they walk up to talk to him how can I help him? He just blurt out into topics that he likes without even introducing the subject. Hes going to talk about leaving the other party. Kind of lost my a lot of times they don’t know what he’s talking about and end of walking away or a group of kids will runoff he goes to runoff with them but he runs off too late. I just see the struggling. I’ve been staying at school in the morning for about five or 10 minutes kind of observing I haven’t really tried to help him yet and tried to work with him much been observing, but from what I’m hearing I may not be having the right approach. Thank you so much.

Can these techniques also help kids with high functioning autism?

Yes, I have a strong background in higher-verbal ASD and it depends on the definition of "high functioning autism". Intelligence has nothing to do with this and many highly intelligent individuals with autism have significant social executive function challenges, or have little social motivation so those variables can be an issue.

is it possible you can't have ADHD even you have all the symptoms?

Someone can definitely have executive function delays for other reasons aside from ADHD.

@@ADHDDude i literally have all the symptoms and i suck at math so bad sometimes im not aware when i wash my hands so fast that i splash water everywhere lol and get scolded all the time but thats not the only thing happened many many things, my parents dont know about it but dont want to tell them

You say an Iep or 504 should not seating with positive role models. What would be the better alternative to put in an iep or 504?

To clarify for you: What I say is that kids with ADHD do not improve their social skills by simply being around kids who adults perceive are positive peer role models. Kids with ADHD who struggle socially haven't learned social information intuitively from a young age, they can't just pick it up like that.

As a teacher this honestly does help. Or really what it more is is not seating them by distracting students/friends. If they do they typically get no work done and talk/goof around instead. So while I’m not sure about the social skills part of it (these “positive peer role models” may just be buffer kids that are more on the quiet side) they are enabling the adhd student to have better focus on their schoolwork (and help stay out of trouble) and be more successful in that way.
