Soldering a brass ring flange to a lead closet bend Not a great joint, but best I could do with limited and extremely dirty lead. Better than shoving a PVC compression flange inside instead.

Great tutorial for us home owners that need to make educated decisions on how to tackle issues for the homestead. It's taking me so far two days since I took off the toilet but now I see light at the end of the tunnel with the 2nd issue realizing I need un "offset brass flange" also, which I just bought. I heard 40/60 ,also 50/50 which is best recommended for 2nd floor on joists? Just bought the yellow torch I see you using two different materials

50/50 is a leaded solder that bonds to lead and brass better than 95/5 lead free When you solder the lead to the brass, heat the brass, not the lead Secure the flange to the floor with screws and roll your lead down on top of it before you solder. Cut any excess lead away so you have room to solder.

What is the main reason for soldering it. Is the only reason for a better seal with the wax ring?

The lead and brass must be joined to keep a water tight seal

@@charlesdeiliberi ok because I was getting a smell in my bathroom so I pulled up the toilet. Looked to me like the wax ring was too small. I found that I have a lead pipe just bent over the brass flange. I didn’t realize it needed to be soldered. So I stacked 2 wax rings right over the bent lead pipe and closed the toilet back up. Can it be done that way
