Soldiers finally allowed to grow beards as British Army overturns century-old ban

Soldiers can finally grow beards while serving in the army in a historic rule change approved by the King.
For the first time in 100 years full beards will be permitted in the British Army, bringing rules in line with the Royal Navy and the RAF.
It comes after years of debate over facial hair rules with defence secretary Grant Shapps branding the century-old ban “ridiculous” last year.
Chief of general staff General Sir Patrick Sanders is said to have made the decision after a review of serving and reservist officers showed an “overwhelming majority” felt the army needed to change its policy.

The only reason they've allowed this is because facial hair amoung men especially the young is really popular so if you are thinking about joining and you can't grow a beard/stubble is going to be a big no, no.

This is the reason they allowed moustaches 120 yrs ago though when them rules were made. Aristocrats had moustaches so they were allowed.

No - It is to accommodate the views and wishes of all British Army personnel that partook in a poll from CGS asking if we wanted to grow beards, if we were allowed to. Absolutely nothing to do with religion as there are already rules in place for cases such as that.

Muslims and other religious groups were already allowed to wear beards for religious reason. Beards for religious reasons have been alowed for over 200years

About time too. The RAF allowed facial hair and the Andrew always did (though only a full set or nothing). This is nothing to do with religion because non-British religionists were already allowed an exception so this is *FINALLY* allowing native British the same rights as those of a non-British origin or religion. Long overdue.

Not a moment too soon. As a Bearded man myself all I can say is that it’s About time all the negative stereotyping and casual discrimination towards men with Beards wether in the military, the workplace or otherwise, came to an end. At the end of the day it’s a man’s right to choose to grow a beard and no one else’s.

Important to look good? Soldiers don't look good dead, injured or suffering from PTSD and homeless...I just find it weird and old fashioned.

Have you tried to seal a respirator with a beard then? It's not as effective, but you have need to have lived that, one day maybe 🤔
