Nicholas heads into the wilderness for a relaxing overnight camping trip, but gets caught in a heavy rain storm blowing in over the distant mountains.
Follow along in my first camping video in over a year as I enjoy some time in the bush setting up and testing out my new surplus pup tent, doing some camp cooking in a specially built cooking fire-pit, some bushcraft work resulting in a fire reflector; useful later as I battled a storm bringing with it so much rain it soaked through my felt hat, boiling up a pot of hot cowboy coffee, and more - all of which features tons of knife, saw, and axe work, and even some exploration of the local area where I find an old abandoned camp with many shelters, fire-pits, a log bench area, and other interesting remains.
Enjoy the video, and stay dry!

I'm currently editing 3 more, so stay tuned! I managed to find some old footage of a grouse hunting trip from 2019 filmed with (at the time) my new camera. I'm thinking about re-editing it and posting it since it's a decent video and I have no idea what happened to it on my channel. I may have accidentally deleted it. We'll see!

Great to be back! I recommend Richmond Hobson's book, "Grass Beyond the Mountains". It takes place in the 1930's north of where Eric Collier and his family homesteaded, and is where I live now. These videos take place right in the same, and vastly untouched country as the book does. It gives a nice bit of backstory to the area, and if you liked "Three Against the Wilderness", this book complements it greatly, with many locations shared between the two. One day I plan to get down into the south Chilcotin and do some more videos around the Collier homestead. Thanks for watching!

You weren't kidding about taking advantage of your time off KZfaq! The videography, shot angles & framing, and editing are on a whole new level. It really brings out the best of the content itself. How did you like the tent? I've become a convert to canvas shelters, where possible. I like the better light blocking and in particular the softer, lower, and much quieter noises vs. synthetic materials. I also find I get more versatility out of the 2 piece shelters, and they can be configured in different ways. I really enjoyed the exploration part. Beautiful scenery and interesting finds. Looks like your camp fared very well given the weather that rolled in on you. Good luck on the hunt, and thanks for taking us along!

Thank you!! I try to be modest when I am producing videos, especially while editing, but even I noticed the improvement in quality with this one. After using the tent in this video then going back to my silnylon tarp in the next one (currently being edited), I completely agree. Canvas is superior in everything, maybe aside from weight, but I don't worry about that too much. I'm planning to make up a few 10oz canvas oilcloth tarps within the next few weeks to hopefully replace the silnylon where I can. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate the kind words 👊

Morning Cowboy!! Great video!! Loved that old school pup-tent. Something about rain hitting a canvas tent does my old heart good. It reminded me of the shelter half pup tents we used when I was in the service. You had a "tent buddy". Each would carry half of the tent. Damn, that goes back a few years. That old camp-site you wandered upon was interesting. Sometimes when I'm out and about, I'll come upon something, an old camp, a rock formation not made by nature. An old faded elk rack. I like to set and just imagine what took place. You know? That old camp you found? Maybe Pan Phillips and his pard's sat in that very spot.🤠 Looks like you're carrying a different rifle from the guide gun. Stay safe. Happy trails. Roger
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, hope all is well! I'm glad that pup-tent brought back some good memories for you. I certainly fell in love with it myself filming this video - it's a great tent!. Another viewer figures the old camp was a guide camp, likely for moose hunting on the muskeg behind it. Seems like a good theory to me, as I saw a cow and calf cross it while I was out there! This area is in the opposite direction of where Rich, Pan, and those folk went, but you never know! The old maps show a horse trail going right through the area, and I was even able to loosely follow it and come across blazes on the oldest dead trees that were still standing. Next video I film in the area, I'll get them on camera! The rifle in this video is what I usually carry, a Marlin 1895 CB, very similar to the guide gun model. Thanks for always watching and keeping in touch!

Thank you! I'm not too worried about leave no trace unless it's man-made garbage. In my opinion, a ring of rocks or a small pile of wood shouldn't be enough to offend folk, unless it's within a park or something similar that has specific laws against it. I took my camp completely apart as I plan to return to it later this fall, and might want to build something different. Clean slate to work with!

Unfortunately, that's not really possible. The majority of my gear is either very old and missing tags or maker marks, or just completely built by me, meaning I'd have very few items to list. Even the backpack, I have no clue who makes it. All I know is that it's old and it's was my uncle's, but if I had to guess, maybe it's a Camptrails bag? Can't say for sure, but I appreciate the suggestion! Thanks for watching

Little backstory on those mountains: last year my father and I went up there filming a black bear hunting video, but got turned around due to an absolute downpour of rain. Not even a month later, hunters up there doing the same thing got mauled by a grizzly. Suddenly I wasn't so bummed out we turned back, haha! The Trapper Nelson's still around! I just haven't gotten to using it yet. I've been waiting for a oilcoth tarp I made to cure, that way I have a shelter to match it's age. I'm not sure what the pack is in this video, but as far as I can tell, it's an old "Camp Trails" pack. I've seen some similar ones to it on Ebay. Thanks for the comment and support!

I have a question for you. I grew up in northern Vermont. Doing many of the same things as you. I have noticed that you dig a fire pit every time you make camp ? We always made a stone pit ! But never Doug a hole . Is this to stop roots from smoldering and later starting a forest fire? I realize that things are different in other parts of the world . Was just curious as to why ? Thank you for the great videos. Chip

@wituikbws 3 ай бұрын
Yes, that's exactly why I do it. I live in pretty much entirely spruce and pine forest, and if you don't dig up and remove the top layer of duff it will smoulder and spread, sometimes even underground. If I don't hit sand, gravel, or rock when I dig, I won't start a fire. No point in risking it. Thanks for watching!

Why the tape on the lever gun.I like the big knife you have where can i get it.
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 жыл бұрын
The tape is currently the only thing holding the rifle together. The stock has a crack right on the grip so I took some notes from a life-long cowboy and rancher and his solution to inevitable crack problem, taped it up, and it's actually holding up great. The knife is a custom design I came up with and had built by Mike Jones Knife & Tool out of Quesnel, BC. Best knife maker without a doubt, but that's my opinion of course. Check him out and say I sent you!

It starts around half way through the video towards the night. I got as much of it as I could on film but it was getting a little bit worrying for the camera gear so I had to cut it short. The majority of the downpour was overnight as well. Sorry I couldn’t film more of it!!

Great video Nicholas! Great camera work. Only thing I got to complain about is not about you but KZfaq. I want to help you make some ad cash by watching them but KZfaq inserted a 25 minute ad as the number two ad. That’s just ridiculous. Isn’t a 25 minute ad just a video that should stand on its own? Just ranting, great to see your videos, I really enjoy watching them.

Thank you! We have all sorts of waterfowl (ducks, geese), upland game birds (various types of grouse), small to large game (muskrat to deer), but the notable ones mainly due to the threat they impose would be moose, grizzly bear, black bear, and cougar, in that order of concern. That's why I always have that rifle with me 🤠 Oh, and bigfoot

Cool video man, what would you recommend for boots ? and also socks ? what do you usually go with ?
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 жыл бұрын
I've tried nearly everything - modern/old hiking boots, engineer boots, packer boots, all kinds of hunting boots, mountaineering boots, insulated and non-insulated rubber boots, etc, etc, etc. In my experience, it really comes down to what the boots are for. If you're in the high country climbing up scree slopes or hunting with heavy packs and need as much ankle support as possible, the Hanwag Trapper is my pick. If you're in bog/muskeg, or in extreme cold, insulated rubber boots like the Baffin Hunters work well, but find tougher and better quality ones if you can as the Baffin's wear terribly and will get ruined within 3 weeks of buying. Riding horses in warm climate? Georgia Packers or Redwing Pecos. In winter? The L.L. Bean Maine Boots are great, but size up and fit a -40C liner in them. There really is no boot that fits all bills, especially when you do a lot of varied activities in the bush. You just buy what fits your activities best, both boots and socks, and just pick whatever one works best at what you're doing. Since that wasn't your question though, if I had to pick one boot that's the most versatile out of everything I've tried, it'd be the L.L. Bean Maine boot. They're tough, have been around for over 100 years, get repaired for free if you damage them, are good in all weather as long as you use a liner depending on what you're dealing with, are good in most areas that don't require serious ankle support or grip, good for riding a horse in since they have a heel and are small enough to fit a stirrup, good for light hunting especially when you want to be dead quiet, and even are decent for canoes and fishing since they're fairly waterproof if you keep the leather treated with Snoseal regularly. These boots do have drawbacks though, like having no ankle support or toe protection and they are soft like a moccasin which you either like or dislike depending on preference. For socks, I can't really recommend anything than whatever you like. In the cold, I use thick 100% wool or polyester with a thin wicking liner sock underneath, and in the warm I use super thin cotton or liner sock, and no matter what, I almost always wear two pairs to avoid chaffing. I hope that helps, and sorry for the long response. It's quite a tricky subject to figure out!

It’s a large area of muskeg that has a small creek in the middle of it. It’s a good example of what just about everywhere looks like in the area I’m in, although most aren’t so photogenic and rather look and smell like death. The insects aren’t really a concern here since if you cared about them, you’d decidedly go insane. The mosquitoes, black flies, and horse flies are unbelievably bad. If it weren’t for deet, I’d question how one could exist here, and it gets a lot worse when you are on a horse, haha! Thanks for the concern and I appreciate the thumbs up! 🤠👍
