Last year I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding caused by the pandemic, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video.If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

Thanks for the memories. My first solo backpack was in that area at age 16, back in 1976. It’s actually more remote now, with the closure of the campsites at Franconia Falls and Camp 16 and removal of Desolation Shelter. The Shoal Pond Trail was more heavily travelled back then, and about a mile from the south end “The Pool” was marked by a sign. I think you might have videoed it. When I was climbing Carrigain (in the fog) I was startled out of my wits by what sounded like large boulders crashing down the mountain. It had to have been a rockfall or slide.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine it was quite interesting back then. There was a lot of spots around for camping in the desolation area. I had a similar experience out in Colorado. Sounded like thunder almost but then I saw the dust flowing down the mountain. Not even a massive rock slide just a couple larger boulders it seemed but wow that sound was chilling

Hey Chris nice video! I'm so bummed for you...Carrigain is my favorite high peak in NH. Back in August I did a loop around it and camped on top...got an amazing sunrise and sunset. That Desolation Trail is a real butt kicker!!! Hey Chris, out of all channels I follow, you are the one who cares the least about promoting your own channel (I remember you said "subscribe or whatever" in one video, which was funny), now you have remove all affiliate links and last year you remove the trail names which doesn't help people finding you. Just want to say I respect that and enjoy your contents. Keep up with the good work. You have really good films for New England hikes. Also want to tell you that your CT videos gave us the idea of taking a CO hiking trip earlier in the summer where we had great time. Anyways, keep doing the good work!

I believe it. The reports I saw before heading out were pretty much that the trail was in a terrible state. Besides a relatively small area of overgrowth / marshy walking, it was pretty much a breeze to get through. Who ever is taking care is doing better than well

Your cinematography is outstanding. The extra mile you go to capture these hikes really shows and to which I am very grateful. I live in Kansas so there is nothing like this anywhere here. Being able to see these places through you eyes is just priceless to me. Thank you Chris \O/. Have you ever thought of using a small drone to film the walk away scenes and then just fly it back to you afterwards? Just sayin'...
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ron. Appreciate that greatly! I love the look of the drone shots but feel like they are annoying as all hell to other people around out there hiking. I believe they are also illegal to land in most of the WMNF. So as much I may like to dabble with it I dont even consider it as an option. Would be great to not have to back track to the camera though haha

Hi Chris! Great great watch for sure! I have a mt. Carriagan of my own. Rabbit peak out in the Southern California desert. Anza borrego state park. First time we tried it we got slammed by a huge pineapple express storm on the ridge. Not predicted of course. I had a walrus rocket tent at the time and a gust of wind snapped one of the guy lines on the tent. Crazy! Second time was just wrong time, different hiking partner. We had fun just not a good peak assault recipe. Third time my first buddy and I took my chounaird megamid and hiked way further up on the ridge and set ourselves up for a real chance to make it and we did! Sometimes that’s what the mountains want you to do. So do it!👍🏼 Hey I had a question. Do you take a locator beacon with you? I’m a sober backpacker and having an impossible time finding other sober backpackers. Sooo I’m going to have to go alone and feel like I should take a beacon with me. I also want to take bear spray. How do you feel about bear spray? Hey thanks again Chris for going up and down the trail gor filming purposes. Take care and peace.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Haha ya that is a disaster. I actually went and finished off the rest of the trails around Carrigain and was setup at the base again and was going to hike up this morning but it was fog and rain so I skipped it. so now I am 0 for 2.5 we will say haha Do not have a beacon but have been looking into the Garmin inReach. I leave a map with someone and when to expect to hear from me. If they dont, they at least have a rough idea where I am. Bear spray I would carry in grizzly country personally. But luckily my encounters with black bears out in the wild have been ok thus far.

My cascade mountain tech ones I usually use I broke the cork handle on unfortunately

Chris, I have been interested in hiking those trails you hiked, but have been worried about the trail conditions since they are unmaintained and have been for a long time due to the wilderness designation.
