As this channel continues to grow, we're making some changes to reflect how far it has come, and where it's headed. I started Great Lakes Prepping in 2016, and the focus was pretty centered in prepping-specific content. In the time since, the content has evolved into a much broader arrangement of topics. Accordingly, it's time to expand beyond a prepping-only channel (and channel name).
------------------------------
Great Lakes Country (formerly known as Great Lakes Prepping) is a Michigan-based KZfaq channel that focuses on all things DIY, such as cooking, hunting, gardening, outdoor projects, prepping, and lots of other stuff. Be sure to check out our original weekly videos and other online content, including greatlakescountry.com. Please note that we sometimes share links to products or services for which we may earn a small commission, though this does not affect any prices on your end.

I follow you because I’m interested in self sufficiency and homesteading. The ice storm of 1998 left us without power for two weeks. My neighbors froze, then ran away from their cold homes. Not too long ago a home functioned without electricity, it kept the people and their food safe. Modern homes become traps! Back in time people were always prepping, not for the next world disaster, but for the next season …

"Prepping" to me was never about the end of times and the collapse of civilization. To me "Prepping" is about self-sufficiency, learning new skills, and being prepared for emergencies and/or unforseen events that may come up in our daily lives. You've been one of those rare "Preppers", not scaring everyone with fear, simply presenting helpful information in a calm and direct manner. Thanks for the update, best of luck with the changes you've made!

I found your channel via the 5 minute composting video. I think your channel is underrated. You cover a variety of topics, all presented with a mix of geekiness and humour that I find unique and charming, never mind useful. Understand and appreciate the detachment from the "prepper" trend. Looking forward to new content.

Good for you. I'm glad to see that others are sick of the direction a lot of the other channels are going and don't want to be a part of it.

Naturally I, as a fellow Michigander, enjoy that this is a Great Lakes centric channel. I also really enjoy that you are not a fear mongering, insane sort of prepper channel that is too easy to find. I will keep watching your channel because I really like the topics you cover and I'm glad you will be continuing.

Thank you Coleen, I'm happy to have viewers like you who enjoy the sort of content I like making. Those big prepper channels... they are making some good money and have pretty big audiences, but I cannot imagine they actually enjoy anything about making those videos day after day.

I like your channel just the way it is. I’m still watching. I enjoy your cooking. GREAT LAKES is what caught my eye in the beginning. I grew up in the Frankfort, Benzonia, Beulah area. I love the place I grew up in, it’s a beautiful place to live as a kid.

Thanks Dawn. That is a nice area. I've mostly been more on the eastern side, but I've spent a fair amount of time in the Frankfort area. I seem to remember going to an alpaca farm out there once...for reasons I can't really remember!

I just found your channel and do appreciate your delivery style. Im all about being self- sufficient and making things that will be useful for me and my family. I live in Montana but have family in Michigan. Outdoorsy is definitely a great theme, and i would be interested in learning to smoke fish and meat, gardening, as well as food preservation techniques 😊

John! How exciting! I love the new name and the new plan!!! Very cool! I would love to learn about smoking and building an easy and inexpensive smoker and all the other details about it you throw in. Do people smoke rabbits and squirrels? How long does smoked meat last? Where does it fit in the food preservation methods offering? What happens after the stuff is smoked? I love your teaching style too! :)

Thank you Milli, I appreciate that. I'm certain people smoke rabbits and squirrels. And as long as I can get my hands on on 'em, I hope to try it for myself.

I like the change and all the reasons you listed for it are exactly why I love this channel. I was born & raised in MI; in crazy FL now. The thing about Florida is, prepping is essential for everyone -- hurricanes, blackouts, storm surges, scary politics, tropical epidemics, just to name a few. As my intention is to move back home it's important to me to know the differences between area-specific prepping because it can be vastly different. It also gives a new perspective. What I've always loved about this channel is that it teaches (as you said) useful prepping skills without agenda to a much wider population. Prepping should be a part of everybody's life; that said, it shouldn't necessarily be a way of life. Ask anyone in Florida how much of your current life you can miss if you plan, spend and prep solely for the future. I feel this channel has been consistently well balanced and I'm glad to see a name change which reflects that. Well done...as always.

I just found your channel and I appreciate this sentiment. When I watch videos that seem helpful, they're either the types you noted (clickbait/doomsday/ultra-radical) or the same fluffy stuff you might see in very short-form media (3 tips for awesome meals!) parading as preparedness or helpful cooking skills, etc. Inevitably, my entire KZfaq feed becomes the aforementioned from one or two videos and it's not worth it. I think what people miss is that being prepared and learning how to be self-sustaining and self-reliant can/should cross political and ideological barriers and more YTers would benefit from focusing on that. I've watched a few of your videos since the first one was recommended and I think your answers to comments show humility ("That's a good idea, I will try it next time.") and humor. We may or may not agree on tangentially and/or unrelated things, but it doesn't matter because your channel content is largely helpful and I'll subscribe as a fellow Michigander. The new channel name makes sense. 👍

Thank you for your comment. I completely agree with you that preparedness and self-reliance ought to have nothing to do with politics or basically anything else other than what it is. Aside from that, I generally try to make the sort of videos that I'd actually want to watch, and I absolutely don't want to watch people talk non-stop about nothing for 20 straight minutes! I guess I wasn't born with the talent to speak ten thousand words without actually saying anything. Anyhow, thanks again and I appreciate your interest.

I haven’t commented in a while, but I still enjoy and appreciate your content very much! I don’t follow any channels that use fear-mongering or sensationalism, and I find it frightening that a large number of people buy into it. In every genre, in every YT community, sensationalism sells better than high quality and rational content. I dare say it will get worse because this is an election year, and the media won’t help. It’s sad because some of the channels that spread fear actually have some useful information, but I don’t have the time or patience to sift through the bs to try to find it. It must be frustrating to creators with integrity like yourself, but I am happy you stick around. It gives me hope. I look forward to seeing how your channel evolves! 👍🏻🙏🏻

Thanks Forest. It's good to see that a bunch of people recognize the same things I've noticed about the current state of "prepper" channels on this platform. I just don't know how it's enjoyable to anyone to make - or view - that type of content over and over again, week after week. My channel has become a bit all over the place, but every video I make is something that I personally find interesting.
