Finally I get to plumb the depths of the very worst Canadian sweets. And yes, Thrills chewing gum really does still taste of soap! GOOD FOR THEM.

As soon as I heard "Canadian sweets" I knew the molasses kisses would be in the video. I hate those so much. Half of your trick or treat bag would be filled with them. I used to throw them at my sisters. Thrills though, I love Thrills. It's an experience. Strangely addictive.

Love the fact you describe Thrills gum as equivalent to eating your grandparents floral soap, that's how most people in Canada describe it as well. It's was first created as a joke gum and because it was so popular as a prank it caught on. If you ever run into a Canadian mention "soap gum" to them, they'll know what you mean.

I'm from Canada, and I actually like the soap gum. It's definitely not for everyone though, because it really does taste like soap. The molasses kisses are proper nasty though. I remember that every year I'd get a good handful of those bastards in my trick-or-treat bag, even though I didn't see anyone put them in. I think they materialize inside the bags of bad Canadian children to punish them. You can't even use them to bargain for better candy with even the dumbest or youngest of siblings.

I though this ingredient (a brown thick and sticky residue from the extraction of sugar from the sugar canes) was only used nowadays to make bio ethanol gas ! In early 20th century, it was the poorman's sugar, until in 1919 a giant container of molasse broke in Boston, killing over 20 people under a giant wave of brown sirup (it's gotta be one of the worst way of diying, drowning in a tar like substance). It took monthes to clear up the mess and years to get rid of the smell. I would have thought molasse would be pretty much banned from any food after such a tragedy...
