+Anas Maaz To be fair, Jimmy Kimmel/Fallon provide levity whereas Stephen provides that much needed sucker punch wit. That he happens to do both so well is just a bonus...
@Airbii
@Airbii 8 жыл бұрын
+Tafami The thing is you need a certain amount of intelligence to understant over 85% of Colbert's jokes, Jimmy's jokes could be easily understood even by a toddler. In Asia, humour is always very sarcastic and has a lot of depth. May be that is why I like this so much. For example, we make fun of each other based on colour, race and other stuff. The person who is being joked about will have a laugh or come up with a better joke!
@fabulousmyriad267

Anas Maaz That's what I mean. Stephen's audience expect a higher standard of wit than say, the Jimmies. I watched a lot of British satire growing up and in some ways,Stephen's humour is similar in tone. He should guest star in Have I Got News For You.

question to everyone: why is so difficult to pass better background check gun laws and such? its not gonna be bad for the pro gun people because they still get guns what's the big deal?
@LiquidFaiT
@LiquidFaiT 8 жыл бұрын
+851995STARGATE Honestly? Because we have. Its hard for people who don't own guns to understand but the fact of the matter is we have a multitude of gun laws going back to 1934 at every level of government (federal, state, municipal). There are many informed gun owners on both sides of the aisle that would support legislation if it would do anything but there's nothing left that has any logical chance of improving these situations as regards guns. Every transaction through an FFL (Federal Firearm License holder) must have a NICS (National Instant Check System) check. You already have to pass a background check to buy weapons, every weapon. "Better background check" "Common Sense Gun Laws" these are terms that sound good but nobody wants to explain what they actually mean. Fact is that many mass killers pass background checks because they don't have a criminal history until their spree. Magazine bans? Columbine was done in 1999 during the height of an increased period of US gun control called the assault weapon ban which prohibited magazines that held more than 10 rounds. Waiting periods? Spree killers often plan their attack for months or years. They know they are going to die and use as much time as they need to prepare and commit. The recent news crew shooting displayed both an ability to pass a background check and waiting for months before the killing. Fact is, these measures don't even slow down these massacres and people who own guns, know guns, and deal with the existing gun laws regularly know this. To even have an impact we would need to ban guns entirely, but not just that, also a nationwide confiscation which will never happen for both political and economic reasons. But say that it did, the Boston Bombers didn't need guns to kill 4 and maim 264 people (They had guns but the bombs did most of the work). Of course, if guns were illegal it would create a much more lucrative gun running market (just as their is a multi-billion dollar drug running market) and ultimately that illicit activity would create more violence, not less. Guns are also not that hard to make, royal nonesuch is a youtuber, appears to be a teenager, and has all kinds of hand made guns on his channel. If a kid can do it, hardened criminal organizations can do it better. More gun laws make people who don't like guns or even fear them feel better because they equate more gun control = more safety. But this isn't true and as Stephen said, doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insanity. This is probably the primary reason the right (the majority of gun owners) bring up mental health because our mental health system in the US is pathetic and improving it is an avenue that is largely unexplored in preventing these tragedies. Now some spree killers are simply evil people but I think the majority are untreated mentally ill. Improving our mental health system is something that isn't actively pursued and it makes sense why it could prevent these kinds of tragedies which is why I think so many familiar with guns and gun laws in the US support trying something that might work.

Why make a law when crazy doesn't follow it
@williamkeys5701
@williamkeys5701 8 жыл бұрын
+851995STARGATE The NRA opposes ANY type of law that would decrease the number of people that are able to buy guns. They have actively campaigned to strike laws from the books. Their answer to tragedies like the one in OK is to allow more people to conceal carry. That's right, the NRAs answer to gun violence is to have more guns out in the public domain and more people carrying guns. How is that for cognitive disonance?
@taquinas85
@taquinas85 8 жыл бұрын
+Honesthedgehog Life We can still try can't we. The NRA doesn't even block the crazy from getting them. More sales I guess. And how many guns does one person need for protection? 1, 3 or 5?
@Dead_pixelz_
@Dead_pixelz_ 8 жыл бұрын
What we should try is actually fund the psychiatric wards and further mental health awareness. I don't support the NRA as you said, they'd give a gun to anyone. But I don't think imposing laws on people isn't going to be very productive. That would be something just to make people comfortable, and isn't reaching out to the mentally ill who need attention.

Seems like everyone forgets two important words the Founders put in that Second Amendment..."WELL REGULATED." Based on that, I would think the Founders would've been all for some common sense gun laws. And even if they weren't, you think they would've ever foreseen AR-15's? All they had were muskets. If you went back in time and put an assault rifle on the table in front of them, they'd go "Holy shit! Scratch out that amendment! The idiot masses don't need this shit in their house!"
@MartyMacFry
@MartyMacFry 8 жыл бұрын
+Phil Buckhouse District of Columbia v. Heller already settled this. We have to respect all SCOTUS decisions not just the ones we agree with. The founding fathers were pro revolution and even agreed that it was healthy to have a bloody coup every 20 years if necessary. If you put an AR-15 in front of them they would have said oh hell yes the individual should have access to this.

Ok, to be fair, sometimes if you change nothing, things will still change, regardless of whether you are the one changing it or not. Things can and do change on their own. But I think I got the gist of what Stephen was saying. His message was sound.

To the people who claim that greater gun control equals taking guns away from citizens, you have no idea what that phrase even means. It does not mean taking guns away from people who are responsible enough and legally able to own a gun (non-felons) it means making it more difficult to walk into a gun shop and buy a weapon when you are not responsible enough or legally allowed to buy one. There are many states that don't even require background checks to see if you have committed a felony or if you have had a history of mental health issues. Also, many states do not require you to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon, which means anyone in that state with a handgun can carry one concealed. Greater gun controls laws WILL NOT prevent the average citizen from getting a weapon but it will make getting one for those who should not have one much more difficult.

+PresidentSohCahToa I think a waiting period might also help for individual homicides - more time to let the blood cool. I wonder what we could do to prevent the killing sprees. Maybe more youth centers, so kids don't grow up so aggressive? Better foster care system? Any ideas?

What's wrong with highlighting to the country the ineptitude of Clinton thru the Benghazi hearings and the terrible decisions she made as Sec of State? Doesn't it show what a terrible decision maker she is? Very applicable. After all, isn't congress that is supposed to be looking out for the citizens of this country?

@RBriles90 8 жыл бұрын
+evofd I think Colbert is saying that his wording is what is telling. The intent of the hearing in his mind is to weaken her politically, not about Benghazi itself and those that died. You are correct that a byproduct of such a hearing could be that it exposes Hillary's ineptness, but it should be a byproduct not your intent.

Complaint: A late night comedy and entertainment show should be about comedy and entertainment and not be used as a political soap box! I also would like the advertisers to know that I change the channel as soon as guests like Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren or whatever nosy left-wing tyrant comes on and tries to, not merely tell people their business, but enforce policies which tell people what they need to think. You may acknowledge this complaint or continue to ignore it at your own peril.

+StopTheMorons It's a talk show, any other label you want to add onto that is your own bias interpretation. Yeah and what about all the right wingers that have been on? Another idiot making a non-issue into a partisan issue for no reason.

+Naftul Zvi haha All the Republicans that have been on his show are there for campaign reasons. Jay Leno use to have them on also, what Jay never did was preach politics. It is a wonder his numbers are falling to Jimmy Fallon.. You can have politicians on the show, but to insult half of your Audience is foolish, and yes, regardless of who has won the White House this last half century. The American people are basically 50/50 split Conservative and Liberals. The split sometimes is 52/48 or something like that, but basically we are a nation divided down the middle so its stupid to insult half you viewers.
@StopTheMorons
@StopTheMorons 8 жыл бұрын
Naftul Zvi No, it isn't my own biased interpretation. The show is being used to push agenda--period, the fact that I mention and criticize the party of the left in no way indicates that I support the party of the right.

+StopTheMorons So basically, you're saying that talk show hosts should keep their mouths shut if they say things that you disagree with, and that you're only willing to watch political figures on those shows if they're Republican. Boy, that First Amendment really sucks for you, doesn't it?
@StopTheMorons
@StopTheMorons 8 жыл бұрын
Gunman610 That isn't what I'm saying at all. Neither mainstream political party is representative of me. This has nothing to do with 1st Amendment, what part of it's an entertainment show do you not understand? Those people can have all the fucking 1st Amendment they want on the political shows! Oh but I know someone will complain they don't and therefore that's why Colbert must do it. Well that's horseshit!

As DT was bragging about signing the criminal reform bill this week, I was reminded of his obsession with celebrities (does ANYONE think he would've put the "effort" into getting this law passed if a big-butted celebrity hadn't been the one to push him along?), and how he bragged of all the A-list celebs that were going to be at the RNC back in '16, and all he came up with was......Scott Baio and Antonio Sabato, Jr. Colbert's pic of DT's "inauguration" reminded me that he had a show with 'celebs'; weren't any of THEM contacted for the convention? At least they would've been (a little) higher on the totem pole than ….Scott Baio and one of the guys from Duck Dynasty.
