Ai the female gorilla celebrated her 21st birthday on February 27, 2024.
Her father Rikki died five days after Ai was born, so she grew up without knowing her father.
The cause of Rikki's death is unknown.
After that, two females Nene and Oki raised the newborn Ai.
Ai is very loyal and respectful to Nene.
Other gorillas may mess with Nene, but Ai is the only one I have never seen messing with Nene.
She may consider Nene, who was brought up in the absence of the silverback gorilla, to be the absolute leader in her life.
Only Ai knows what Ai thinks of him, though.
By the way, the relationship between Nene and Ai is good these days, and Nene smiles only when she is playing with Ai.
The bond between Nene and Ai is very strong.
Ai and Shabani, a silverback gorilla, had a daughter, Annie.
Annie was artificially nursed for about a year after birth, but Ai and Annie are now getting along well.

Shabani was born in the Appenheul Primate Park, Netherlands.
Nene was born wild in Cameroon.
The other three were born in the Higashiyama Zoo in Japan.
