People today don't realize how important this movie was to the legions of Zeppelin fans when it first came out. Back then, there was no internet, or KZfaq . If you weren't fortunate enough to see them in concert, this was the only alternative. As a teenager back then who who basically lived for Zeppelin, this movie was the ultimate experience. Sure, there were many good bands around, but Zeppelin was head and shoulders above anything else. There will never be another band like them again. Thank you for bringing back a great time to a old fan!

God Jimmy is the best...just amazing!! Everything was very improvised...no two shows were the same

As a guitarist myself, firt time i saw this movie, I knew I'd be seeing it again and again. There are few things in life that leave you in utter, jaw-dropping awe. This is like 20 songs in one. The number of changes Page comes up with is staggering. He's an unlimited source of power chords, riffs, and rhythms. Amazing, simply amazing.

I was at this show as a teenager and when I got to spend time with Jimmy and his girlfriend a couple of years ago I asked him about the show and if he improvised and he said yes, he usually had the freedom to do whatever and if you watch the entire concert you will notice that unlike most band the rhythm section actually follows Pagey and not the other way around and he will turn around and give Bonzo a nod or a look that will let him know when to go to a certain change

This is more like musical performance art than anything else.

Jimmy Page's guitar tour de force.....there are more "precise" guitarists, but there isn't anyone else who could pull off a performance like this - epic, eclectic, diverse.....a masterpiece.

John Bonham was such a great drummer. I remember the day we heard he had died. We were devastated and shocked.

The fantasy section was filmed at Loch Ness - Scotland, about 15 mins drive from my house.

I know they like to improvise on stage. I noticed at 9:13 JPJ looks at John Bonham and smiles as if to say 'where's Jimmy going now?' and John Bonham looks back and shakes his head at JPJ, then they just carry on and improvise alongside Jimmy. In fact JPJ makes a 'you first' gesture to John Bonham and then follows on the bass. That's my take on it anyway but I might be wrong. Robert always said that there were long songs and musical intervals where he'd just be standing around if he hadn't found vocalisations to fit the music. Jimmy does his own thing and yes it's a real 'show off' song for him. I think Jimmy could have composed a lot more film music if he'd wanted to. Jimmy and JPJ probably learned to improvise when they were session musicians as they were never allowed to know who they were playing with or what the music/song would be until they arrived at the studios for music sessions. At that time Jimmy could not read music, maybe JPJ could, I'm not sure. Jimmy did learn how to read music after a while. He was self taught or learned from fellow session musicians I believe.

As someone mentioned, Dazed had certain musical marks that once hit, would signal a change to the others, but other than that, things were greatly improvised. Robert improvised by adding lines from the song "San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie. Sometimes he would add lyrics from "59th Street Bridge", or "Woodstock", among others (speaking of improvising, it was a surprise to hear a bootleg of Jimmy and Jonesy improvising jazzed up bits of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" during a section of No Quarter). I really like the bowed section and in some bootlegs, the bowing almost sounds like whales singing under water. Jimmy's "fantasy sequence" was filmed on the property he owned, at the time, on the banks of Loch Ness. He said he had to climb up the side of the hill several times so they could get the camera angles, almost falling a few times. He also found the makeup process tedious for having to sit still for so long while it was applied. To me, a performance like this illustrates why Jimmy needed his own band. It was a shame that the Yardbirds broke up but I honestly don't think they would've followed him on such a journey.

Their show at Royal Albert Hall (1970) is fantastic. It's more intimate and I recommend it. There's a high quality version on KZfaq under the title "Led Zeppelin DVD I"

What I love about this performance especially is how Bonham is keeping up with Jimmy's insane, almost unpredictable antics with the guitar and how fun it would be to play the drums for this song. This whole performance is like 90% Guitar and Drums.

I didn't really understand this song MSG Live the 1st 20 times , grew up on studio version then when this came out in 1976 I bought it , over the years i started to understand this piece of music more and more being a guitar player , its a truly deep intense song my favorite live Zep Song truly need to listen to it 20 or so times Love It !!!!

The sound, from that BOW, is just plain Erie, The multiple guitar solos here, are amazing!! There were three shows, in Madison Square Garden. This footage IS Well edited, video from all three shows. Those who think this is ONE WHOLE Concert, ONE NIGHT it wasn't. Sorry Fans. This song, in particular has those edits. There are different versions, of this song, throughout the three nights. Agree with Tektoniks! Too Bad Third solo has the movie, cut away from concert footage, to Police Scuffle, Because, THAT was a GREAT Solo, I would have loved, to see!! Great Job!!

Each performance of each song is unique. You asked about Improve versus rehearsed - of course, there are bits and pieces that they play over and over again in the improvisations. But most of their improvisation is just that new and unrehearsed. Robert said about D&C particularly “essence of the early Zeppelin. . .the improvisation and the stuff that really got us off the ground. . .this is the ability to go up there, down there and back again without dropping a stitch. . .” And Page - “There’s no doubt about the fact that there was a musical… let’s call it ESP, a synergy. There were so many times when the rest of the band came in together, and you’re thinking, ‘They haven’t even heard it yet, but they’re right on it.’” LOL r/e JPJ’s hair- if this is the actual performance film - that IS JPJ's hair style at the time - he had to wear the wig in the recreation done a yr later. If you look at what JPJ is wearing at various points in this video, you can see that the footage is from a different performance night. I LOVE the call and response between Jimmy and Bonham during D/C. In their live performances, they generally add snippets of other songs - in D/C it's usually, like here, Scott McKenzie's If You’re Going to San Francisco from big US hit from around 1967 or sometimes something from Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock - . I think at the Earl's Court concert - Jimmy took off on some measures from Broadway's West Side Story. . . When you noted that they were ramping back up you hear Gustav Holst’s “Mars Bringer of War” from The Planets - which is pretty standard at this point in the song.Page is just a wonder😁 They also add all kinds of things into Whole Lotta Love,( in concerts in the earlier years into Heartbreaker or How Many More Times) - usually it's stuff from 50s/early 60's R&R - like Whole Lotta Shakin Going On or I'm A Man, The Hunter,, Boogie Chillun' or Beck's Bolero etc For THIS fantasy sequence we go to the banks of the Loch Ness, Scotland, to a rise behind Jimmy's house the Boleskine house ( a story all in itself) - did the climbing himself - which he figured out after the fact was pretty stupid. This was a great reaction. This performance always cements in my mind that for me, this is the GREATEST band ever. To think, they did this unbelievably creative unique display every night on tour - for up to 3 hours sometimes just blows my mind. HOPE THERE'S MORE

Pretty much all of the parts that stray away from the original studio track are improvised. The San Francisco part is something they did pretty often but the other bits are improvised. They usually used a very bare skeleton of what they wanted to do generally and then built off that.

It'd be more accurate to say the studio version is played at a faster tempo, to satisfy the record company's time constraints. "It reminds me of some Houses of the Holy stuff" This concert is actually from the Houses of the Holy tour, although the tour wasn't actually named as such, it's the tour that followed the release of that album.

When you asked how much of this is improvised, the structure was pretty much the same night to night but what they did within those certain sections was always improvised with a few key peices they would return to to basically find their footing within the performance. If you listen to other performances from the same tour it's a completely different thing each night.

Dazed and Confused live was the lab in which mad scientist Page would experiment with riffs.

Always though was interesting that they took inside image from the 4th album and used in the movie (talking about the whole wizard thing)

It's still HD concert in my head because I was at this show in the garden. They never really do the songs the same twice. In days and confused they jam throughout the middle of the song.

At around the 24:00 mark, you said, "I like whenever anyone plays with the physicality of the guitar to, like, affect the tone of the notes coming out; I always really appreciate that." Jeff Buckley does this a lot in his live recordings. You can hear it on the Live at Sin-e album, and on live versions of songs like, Grace, and Dream Brother (especially the Mystery White Boy version). He gets really cool clicking, echoing, and popping effects, somehow. This can also really be heard on the final track of Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk: Satisfied Mind. This was the last point in Led Zeppelin's career where they were all really 'on.' They took the entire year off in 1974, as they had toured for 5 or 6 consecutive years. By 1975, Page was a shadow of his former self (playing-wise), and Plant's voice was shot more than Sylvester Stallone's victims during the rescue mission in Rambo (2008). Speaking of your comment about Jimmy Page knowing music theory: Do you know it? You mentioned your sheet music, in another video, thus, I assume you're talking about actual musical notation and not tabs. If so, are you self-taught? You should listen to some other bootlegs of performances of D&C to see how much is improvised. A lot of them sound very different. There’s definitely a structure and signposts for the musicians to get back together but other than that, most of it is improvised on this song. I’d recommend the 45 minute performance of it from March 21, 1975 Seattle, also 9-29-71 Japan and the one from How The West Was Won

FYI when the original film crew was hired they eventually got canned and had very little usable footage so the filming started before Robert Plant got his teeth fixed and then they re-created a lot of footage in a soundstage made to look like madison square garden. Also, John Paul Jones who had his real hair in the original footage got it cut so in the re-created footage he wore a wig. You can tell when it's a wig as it's real bad but you can also tell his real hair just a bad haircut with the bangs.

In a New Musical Express review of 'Remasters' - for the uninitiated, their first major retrospective - the band was described as everything that was great and everything that was shit about 1970s rock. That still holds true today, but it's founded on the perception that you should always just play the song.

All the close ups were shot in an empty theater a year later, JPJ is in a wig, and Plant's teeth are fixed. Most of the singing and guitar playing is mimed.

Bonham at the end tho...... incendiary.

Also you should react to some songs from the celebration day reunion concert in 2007. It's cool to see them older and doing things just as they would've if they had kept going.

I think you should get away from the MSG Song Remains The Same lives. That's just the peak of their flamboyance/extravagance. Take a look at the 1970 Royal Albert Hall or 1969 Danmark TV performances. There is not much Zeppelin footage but Id plump for those two. Cheers.

I'd like to recommend to you Jimmy's soundtrack to Lucifer Rising - many parallels to Dazed and Confused - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5yCZ8qk2JawqGw.html Thought you might find it interesting, not for a reaction, just for a listen. Page wrote/orchestrated the music, played all the instruments used and produced about 20 minutes to be used as the soundtrack to the 1972 film of the same name by experimental film maker Kenneth Anger.(cast included Marianne Faithful, 60s singer/Mick Jagger GF and Mick's brother Chris early on and Jimmy in a cameo) but never used due to a disagreement between Page and Anger (of course, there's a story behind this whole project.. . .) The film was not released until about 1980 with a soundtrack by Bobby Beausoleil (convicted murderer and part of the Charles Manson Family) Even back during the Yardbird's time, Jimmy was into avant garde music/theatre. Jimmy's music here described as "unorthodox guitar based soundscapes." The music was only available in bootlegs until 2012 when Page remastered and released it in vinyl through his website. The snippets other than the main title section are pretty wonderful. I understand the analytical sense here. Jimmy probably has (or had) this himself - although I suspect in the long run that may have been eroded by drug use. Certainly there are stories later on that do not reflect on them well as musicians.
