Plot adding, the theory behind tone shift of shadow is because during Robotnik's arrest, shadow was captured by G.U.N hence why he was in the holding cell and Robotnik was forced to continue his work for GUN under strict supervision, in that time he found out Maria was one of the many that died on the space colony and he lost his purpose. He became very angry and secretly changed the code for the colony and shadow to destroy the earth, changing shadows memories to want to end humans. Amy recites part of Maria's speech and thats when he realises what he promised. He was never made for the downfall of the earth.

Easily my favorite SA2 review. You clearly love the Sonic franchise and it shows. This is one of the best Sonic games of all time and I'm glad you dedicated so much time and work to give it a worthy review

I wanted to point an interesting thing out. Final Rush also appears in the Shadow the Hedgehog game, with the stage being called "The Ark". You start in the tunnel that you rocket out of at the beginning, and if you try playing the stages side by side you will see they are set in the same area.

18:02 the reason why I specifically complained about it is because in shadow the hedgehog (2005) the general of GUN was just a boy when he first laid eyes on shadow 50 years ago. And on top of that was close friends with Maria, and blames shadow for her death. Two things, while I partly understand why he would blame shadow why are you the general of the government that put the bullet in Maria’s back? And two, if the general has been holding a grudge against shadow, for that long, and has known him since his creation, THEN WHY WAS SONIC ARRESTED IN THE FIRST PLACE?! You could argue that he probably didn’t have a clear photographic memory, but I’m pretty sure he would remember that the thing that “killed Maria” would be a black hedgehog. My theory is that he just told his soldiers to capture Sonic when he was told of a giant hedgehog roaming the streets of station square, or central city, or San Francisco, or wherever the game takes place in.

SA2 is actually my top favorite sonic game in the series,great job on the review cooper!

I think the fake emerald functioning for Sonic was also a testament to Tails' ingenuity and skill as a technician and engineer, it was a great character moment for both of them. Literally, Tails SUCCEEDED in creating a form of technology that Robotnik would KILL for; Fake emeralds with all the properties and abilities and functions, just with a bit less power. Imagine mass fabricating them, the unbelievable evil- Or good- it could do. Tails is, literally, a genius beyond even Eggman, even if he doesn't quite know it.

FYI, if Jet Set Radio was called Jet Grind Radio in North America, it's because of copyright problems with the title "Jet Set". I've also heard somewhere that there was a Radio station in North America called "Jet Set Radio", and they didn't wanted to have problems with that radio station, but I'm not sure of that info, take it with a grain of salt.

what i find funny is that Tails is able to drown in the water in the Chao world... that's not something that could be an accident, that had to be programmed in there. he's even got a drowning animation.

Sonic Adventure 2 was revealed a day before your second birthday and that is probably the coolest parallel to The Bouncer being released before my first birthday. I really enjoy your longer reviews! I used the english dialogue. taking what he said as true he might of only known of her and his grandfather. I don't think anything implies he had a close personal relationship with his grandfather but he certainly looked up to him.

In which why I prefer Amy Rose from Sonic adventure 1. Amy's characterization of went downhill starting with Sonic adventure 2 beginning to evolutionary step of what would come in the future. Especially during the 2010s and beyond. Or simply The Meta Era.

Really Like your reviews. You really look back upon mistakes and try your best to improve. Btw Cooper what do you think of the Sonic prime cast? I personally think they are great. I really like shadows voice actor Ian Hanlin who is my favorite Shadow voice of all time. Plus the portrayal of him in prime is really great he really is the anti hero in the story.

I remember reading up apparently Ohtani also did the lyrics for the raps in the Knuckles levels. Not sure if its sourced but given all the Engrish, I'm lead to believe there is truth to it. I'm not sure where the idea Gerald was immediately executed after he was brought into custody but he wasn't. He was made to continue working on Shadow after he was collected after the ARK raid. He was only executed after GUN caught wind of his doomsday plot, which he only started after he found out Maria wasbamong those killed on the ARK when it was shut down. I'm also not sure how Amy's character is regressed in SA2 compared to SA1. Is it just because she isn''t playable? Overall loving the video!!!

Dunno if its cannon or not but i think after the ark incident they still made him work for them and that's where he programmed the ark and left his diary as well as altering shadow's memory, which is why he thinks maria's wish was world destruction

When it came to Sonic Adventure 2 even though it did go through a period when there were fans saying that the game was not all that good to downright bad, I just could not get down with that. I could admit the game was flawed and it's not perfect but despite the flaws, I thought the game was pretty great back in 2002 and even with nostalgia, I just genuinely felt the game was good. The story kept me engaged and got a tear from me with the ending, the gamreplay was functional, and the music was fantastic, what more could a kid ask for? My views more or less line up with yours where there was so much to like about the game then and still is now. One thing I gotta say though is that even though hub worlds were not included in the game, I feel like if they did have them, it would've emphasized the "adventure" feeling just like how it felt in SA1, at least in my opinion anyway. I mean, could you imagine if they made the Space Colony Ark a hub and you got to explore it and heck, they could've left ARK notes that gave more lore about the colony. I dunno, I just think that would've been awesome to explore haha.

42:31 I forgot where I heard this but Gerald Robotnik had travelled around the world for his work which explains the differencebetween the bio lizard and shadow,in SA1's Lost World level there is a mural of chaos on the wall so Gerald must have based the bio lizard off of chaos.Then in S3&K in Hidden Palace Zone during knuckles' boss fight you can see another mural,this time of super sonic versus robotnik,so shadow was based off super sonic judging by things like his quills pointing up.

Love your videos. Start to finish. I find myself to be a sound quality analyst when it comes to video game soundtracks and sound mixing. I never make it a reason to shelve a game because of bad mixing, but I am capable of appreciating clean sound direction. An example is Sonic Unleashed, which chose to omit background music in a majority of cutscenes and only use music to enhance rhetoric (although it can be repetitive). I choose boring cutscenes with an easily comprehensible plot, over an audacious attempt at action packed cutscenes where I can barely hear whats being told. Side note: Hunnid P accusations upset the hell out of me. But the knuckles stages are still a huge vibe. Can’t deny some of the Knuckles stages have some of the best sound direction when it comes to putting the player into the enviornment. Pumpkin Hill, and Meteor Herd are indisputably two of Sega’s greatest attemps at immersion.

41:42 I’m pretty sure it was said somewhere that while Gerald and Shadow were imprisoned, GUN still had him working on project shadow and during that time he tampered with Shadow’s mind to ensure his plans would be carried out if Shadow was ever released. He was executed later when GUN started getting suspicious of him but didn’t find out specifically what he did to Shadow and The Ark. Amy’s words just triggered the memories that were repressed by Gerald.

My personal take on the Mech Shooting gameplay is that Eggman's stages are pretty fun and well designed most of the time, but Tails' stages are mostly frustrating and poorly designed.

I like Sonic Adventure 2, one of my favorite Sonic game under Sonic Mania Plus. I like all gameplay, however there are some nitpicks I have. - Like running in pipes with Sonic and Shadow can be jank. - Trying to LightDash but instead I do a Somersault. - Mechs turning - Electric Shield attracting rings which affects doing the LightDash. - Mechs lock on not being too great since I have to jump. - Rouge’s last stage with the gravity being annoying. - Shadow’s last stage’s gimmick. - Janky rails - Camera which can go behind walls or ground which can be annoying. - Artificial Chaos’… I do think a massive mod could improve this game, maybe years down the line I could make it. - Fix the sound mixing for the cutscenes. - Make the characters not cut off each other. - Improve the game’s lighting, and make it brighter at least, especially for the Aquatic Mine Zone. - Share the same character model for all the cutscenes. - Improve the character model by increasing the poly count. - Also just improve the designs…like Amys… - Remap Sonic & Shadow’s movesets. Spindash - B button Lightspeed Dash - B button Lightspeed Attack - B button Somersault - X button Bounce - X button - Improved momentum gameplay for Sonic & Shadow. - Improved rail grinding to be less jank. - Better turning for Tails & Eggman’s mech. - Better mech lock on. - Remove the annoying enemies that surprise attack the character. - Make it so the player can’t homing attack on a ghost in Eggman’s pyramid, they’re annoying. - Nerf King BoomBoom - Make the meteors in Meteor Herd Zone less annoying. - Give Shadow the Bounce upgrade. - Give Rouge a Water Necklace (what was it called?) - Improved camera to be less crappy. - Let multiplayer characters be playable in the actual stages. Amy be playable in Sonic’s stages Metal Sonic be playable in Shadow in his stages Tikal be playable in Knuckles stages Chaos 0 in Rouge’s stages Good Chao in Tails stages Dark Chao in Eggman’s stage - Nerf Artificial Chaos This is what I want in an improvement mod.

EDIT: @coopercastille One small misconception in both of your sa2 reviews was that the game graded you on whether you got hit via losing rings, the game only grades you on your score and your time, meaning that you can as many hits in a stage like final rush and still get an A rank as long as your fast enough and get a lot of points without dying, same goes for heroes, also this had me thinking, if you had known about this years ago, you’d have a much better time with most of the A ranks LOL, wish we both of us knew about this earlier honestly, also I never really commented about this before since it never had really bothered me, just wanna make sure you shortly address this in your heroes video

1:38:26 I don't think those are a reference to the tubes in Chemical Plant Zone, I think they're actually a reference to those yellow ring zero-G warp transporter thingies that zip you around the place in Death Egg Zone in Sonic 3. Eggman was obviously inspired by the ARK when designing the Death Egg so that might be something he took from it.

The story isn't well put together in game. I'm sure, like you mentioned, the localization didnt help. Though they do go back and try to fill in the holes, it's one of those things that you have to look up on your own than experience it in the game. Concerning Shadow not remembering Maria's last words and his promise, when Rouge confronts Shadow, showing him the paper with Project Shadow info, Rouge says that Shadow may not be the true Shadow, and that even his memories may not be real. Its subtle, but its ment to place a bit of doubt in whether Shadow's memories are actually correct, perhaps they were edited. Of course, the outside sources from the game expand to say that, yes, Shadow's memories were edited by Gerald. He was allowed to continue working on Shadow for G.U.N. for a period of time after his capture. However, after it got out that Gerald was making changes to the Ark (how he gained access I have no answer, perhaps he was allowed back onboard to continue working on Shadow, he remotly changed the programing, hack some G.U.N. bots to do it, no idea) and planing to betray them and destroy the world, thats when they decided to execute him.

I'm enjoying this video so far but I am disappointed that you JUST got done defending the story of SA2, and then at 41:51 you've totally forgotten that Shadow's memories were altered by Gerald Robotnik. Of course Shadow forgot his promise to Maria, he didn't have much say in the matter lol. The same goes for not getting how Gerald make his ARK plan work out. You even point out the writing on the wall of his prison cell, and Sonic's cell earlier in the game, but you don't add 2+2 together that he was clearly still working on Project Shadow the whole time. Or at least making GUN believe he was working on Project Shadow. I'll go back to enjoying the video now. I always love hours long video essays sharing love for SA2B, it was one of the first Sonic games I'd played and the first Gamecube game I ever owned.
