Tests of the A6700's hand-held video image stability and the video auto-focus capabilities would be greatly appreciated. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of videos on KZfaq covering either of these right now for the A6700.

As a user of the a6000 and a6600 this camera is awesome. Sony has other cameras that are bigger, have multiple slots, and are really designed to record for hours. This is a hybrid and hybrids are compromises by definition. It's wonderful. Compact, capable, and affordable (relatively speaking). Enjoy the economies and go make content.

Not disagreeing with you at all. Big upgrade for video especially from the other a6000 series cameras. My only thing I said is it felt like maybe a missed opportunity to go slightly higher end like the X-T5/Canon R7 given the internals have the power to beat those cameras...Sony doesn't have an APSC camera that delivers those features, only full frame

If Sony were a German company, the motto of their APS-C camera line would be "Kompaktheit über alles". Sony believes the main reason for APS-C is compactness, and they've held that philosophy, going back to the tiny NEX cameras. The A6700 is the latest generation of this philosophy. And it's a proud scion of that line. It's a beast, on a gimbal (as are all of the A6xxx cameras). Mount a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 lens on it, and you're light and compact enough for almost any gimbal rated for cameras larger than a GoPro. 11 FPS is faster than all of the other Sony cameras, except the sports-specialized Alpha 1 and A9. And for the cost of an A9, you could buy three A6700s and get 33 FPS, sort of. A6700 is the cheapest entry into the Sony AI autofocus system. The ergonomics are improved over the older A6xxx cameras. Bigger grip, separate dial for stills, video, and S&Q, fully-articulating LCD screen. Video is a quantum leap over the older A6xxx cameras. Uncropped 4K60 is big. 10-bit, 4,2,2 video makes S-log 3 more useable. If you don't shoot long video clips, you've basically got an FX30, with much better stills capability, for $400 less (ok, add $50 for a cage, to hang your video stuff on). Focus breathing compensation in a more affordable camera will make the feature available to more shooters, and help sell Sony-brand lenses that support the feature. You can build a kit that covers 15-525mm full-frame equivalent, weighs under two kilos, and will fit in a 10L sling bag. The older I get, the less stuff I'm willing (or able) to haul around. If you don't NEED a second card slot, and you can live with the small viewfinder, this camera is a no-brainer. For $1400, you basically get an FX30, with more heat limits, combined with an A7RV that's been locked in crop mode, but with only one card slot and a small viewfinder. I call that a helluva deal.

APSC camera is good to be small. If we want a big body, go FF. If you want FF to crop for further reach like APSC, get the a7RV, which basically gives the same 26MP as the a6700 in super 35. The a6600 is just nice to be in this small form factor. Do NOT change.

I would tend to agree. I love shooting pictures, but mostly do it when travelling, and APSC is the compromise that suits me, the smaller the better. Although, to be completely fair, a few mm on the size of the body may ultimately not be so important (even using FF body is not so constraining, see A7C … but physic will catch you though with the size, mass (and cost) of the lenses). What is actually making me sad today is that we more or less see a plateau in photo quality of the sensors (APSC but also FF to some extend) because the billions of $ of R&D and production equipment are geared toward the (very) small sensors for phones. These sensors (crazy 200 MP) are unusable for big camera (FF and APSC) with big lenses. It will take many years before the bigger sensors can benefit from this (production machines but also all the software wizardry for post processing seen in phones) … there may even be a risk that at some point, small sensors, associated with very advance software, could reach a quality perceived as “good enough” even for many pro, that the entire bigger sensor market would crumble 😢

I think there are things left off of it because I think that Sony will surprise us later by releasing another camera that will have those extra features to be called it’s flagship model. I don’t think the size is a big problem because it’s supposed to be smaller. I don’t think it’s a problem to not have an extra card slot. Cards just don’t break suddenly & plenty of professionals such as myself went all of our lives without a second card slot & nothing was wrong. It’s just an inconvenience. I think the viewfinder and the flip open screen are junk. I feel like they should have a much better display on both. I also agree with the model not having a higher frame rate but again, maybe they’re saving it for a later release. It’ll certainly get the job done but we are definitely a spoiled bunch with having so much given to us over the years. You did an excellent and right to the point review!

@@godhead331 The main issue with the S5II crop in 4k60 (the A7IV crops in too) is that Panasonic doesn't have any APSC super wide angle lenses so it's impossible to get a wide angle 4k60 shot. With the A7IV, you can just use one of the APSC lenses for the A6000 series like the 10-20mm F4 when your shooting 4k60 on the A7IV to still get a wide angle. So just know that with the S5II, it's pretty much impossible to shoot 4k60 wide angle. Not everyone needs it, but just make sure. There is a workaround on the A7IV and a6700 series by using APSC specific lenses

Hi! I am looking into beginning my journey as a Hybrid shooter (professional: Some weddings, videos and portrait pictures). Besides the fact of the lack of 2 card slots, would you consider this a6700 could be used as a beginning camera for professional work (Quality to do the job). looking into new cameras below $1,500's : Canon R8 & R7, Sony A6700, A7iii & Lumix S5 (In the future I can upgrade to a more "Pro" camera and this could become my "B-Cam").
@careylymanjones

If you can live without the second card slot, go for it. You'll be getting the same sensor tech as the A7RV (only smaller), the same AI AF as the A7RV, a faster burst rate than the A7RV, and the video capacities of the FX30, albeit with some heat management limitations. The EVF isn't as good as the A7RV, but at least it has an EVF, which is more than the FX30 has. It's lighter and more compact than the FX30, and it's $400 less. And, possibly best of all, it's a Sony, which means you get the Sony E-mount lens catalog to choose from. Unlike Canon, which prohibits third-party RF mount lenses, or Nikon, which prohibits third-party lenses that compete with their offerings, Sony welcomes third-party lenses. Think Sony's 16-55mm f/2.8 G lens is too big and too expensive? Try Sigma's 18-50mm f/2.8. It's half the price, and almost half as small. You give up a little corner sharpness, but not much, especially if you stop down a little. And Sigma's 56mm f/1.4 is as good a portrait lens as you'll find, for APS-C.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 ай бұрын
While this is a great camera, I'd actually personally look at the Canon R7 or Panasonic S5II for more professional work. I do think a 2nd card slot is important for things like weddings and the a6700 ergonomics don't work as well for that type of demanding work. But Canon's APSC lineup is pretty much crap right now so you'll be buying mostly full frame lenses. That could be a good thing if you plan on upgrading soon to something like an R6II but a big negative if this camera is all you'll be using for 3+ years

@@learningcameras With Canon you pay through the nose for glass. Canon's APS-C lens lineup is so bad, I don't see much point in buying a Canon APS-C body. Just bite the bullet, and get full frame. OK, I waited for the reviws of the latest releases of the A7C line and I'm still planning to buy the A6700. The overheating issue has been taken care of with the FW update, so I'm almost pulling the trigger. I guess I'm one of the few people who are more thinking "livestreaming" than "Oh, video, photo.." because in an A6700 the budget, features, size, versatility, and on top of it all (for me, right, livestreaming?..) the Auto Framing feature. I'd gladly pay for the FX30 if Sony'd ad the latest AI and Auto Framing - but they won't. So my scenario is that an A6400 is for the moment my headshot camera but I'm also sometimes going wide on it, showing my whole overbody (not naked folks, but playing the guitar 🙂 ) and that Auto Framing would make it possible that I move in the room and show stuff, amps, accessories used etc etc. So the only thing is that I can't find anybody talking about the time an A6700 is able to send video through HDMI out to a capture card - 'cause that's my scenario. The A6400 can go live for hours, in 4K 25p, sent into Ecamm Live. All I'd need from the A6700 would be some 1,5 hours of live. This because I won't be needing the Auto Framing all the time, only for certain workshops and courses and then I could do the rest on the A6400. The other features of the A6700 are simply amazing, I could do my events photo shoots (concerts, corporate stuff), instructional videos for clients etc.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 ай бұрын
I'm honestly not sure the autoframing will work while exporting HDMI out so confirm that first. If you're not also recording to the card, that should help record time and in 4k24, it should be pretty long but definitely verify that auto framing works when not recording to the card

26MP is what the mighty A7RV delivers, when shooting in crop mode. There's a limit to how small you can make pixels, without destroying your low-light performance. I'll gladly trade some resolution for better low-light performance. I don't see Sony abandoning its compact-body APS-C format to get a second card slot, any time soon. That's just not how Sony rolls. An A7-style body might be nice, but what would Sony do with all the extra space? They've already put nearly everything worth having in the A6700. Add a second card slot, a DSLR-style EVF, and a cooling fan, and you've still got room for stuff to rattle around. Oh, and you've probably raised the price to over $2,000. Hard pass, on that.

Loved the review. I so appreciate it! My thoughts on the weaknesses as listed of the sony a6700: small EVF (I also wear glasses but I don't have a problem with the viewfinder); 2. only one card slot (when is the last time that a data card went bad?! If you are careful you save to a portable external drive every hour, and would only lose one hour of shots, or save every 5 minutes if you are really nervous :)); 3. fast frame rates? How many of us have NO desire to delete hundreds of shots, that take an hour to two hours to decipher like an obsessive compulsive patient, trying to find the perfect shot?! 11 FPS is SO fast that it is plenty of speed for me. What has sold me on the sony a6700 is precisely its small size, weight, and small lenses from multiple companies. I'm an international traveler and soon to be videographer---size matters!!!!!! I completely agree with the vlogger that camera image quality has plateaued... for all the so-called modern tech in today's cameras, how is it possible that the IPHONE 14 Pro, or the 13 PRO, can be as good or better (except for power zoooming)? How humbling is that?! For all that a cell phone can do, and now their cameras are somehow packed into the slender body of a cell phone, and blow away regular cameras?!!!

Thanks!!! So yes and no. The last few years Sony's been really focusing on specific target audiences for cameras...like way too specific. So specific that most people either need multiple cameras to get a job done or have to work around some of the potential weaknesses. It's so specific that they literally have like 7 APSC cameras currently on sale. The current strategy seems to be to target a specific user and flood the market with multiple versions of the same camera for each user. So for this, the a6700 is perfect for someone looking for a mid-grade APSC hybrid camera to use as a compact, travel, consumer targeted camera...that's pretty targeted. Or they just took the a6600, threw in the insides from the FX30 APSC camera (the most current APSC camera), tweaked a few issues on the a6600 and called it a day. And the result is a camera that is amazing but feels like the internals and externals don't quite match up. Not sure exactly which one honestly lol

Sony COULD have gone after that, instead they chose to stay sub compact/consumer and price it $100 less. Still the a6400 is an awesome camera, has more lenses, and a few extra features like 4k120 and some people prefer smaller/cheaper, but given this is Sony's highest end APSC camera (and they have plenty of lower end ones), I'm just thinking they should have just made the external hardware a tiny bit better even if that brought the price to $1499. @@learningcameras $100 more for the body, plus how much more for the Canon lenses? With Canon RF, you can have any lens you want, as long as Canon makes it. Pretty much every third-party lens comes in an E-mount version. Save $100 on the body AND save $$$ on your lens kit. Your only alternative to Canon RF glass to to spend $200 on the EF-RF adapter. Now you're at $300 more, and you're using older glass. If you're desperate to have a second card slot, I guess it's a solution. But I have a two-slot camera (A7III) for those RARE occasions where I don't dare rely on a single card. At this point in my life, two card slots just isn't a big selling point. Would I go an extra $100 for a Sony APS-C in an A7-style body with better EVF and cooling, and two slots? Probably, but I don't think Sony could do it at that price point. The FX30 is $1800, and has NO EVF and no mechanical shutter. Also no AI AF. I think $2,000 is a more likely price point for such a camera. Would it sell, at THAT price point? Maybe. But it would be a complete reversal of Sony's view of APS-C - a big camera body with little bitty lenses, as opposed to a small camera body with a mostly small, and a few big lenses. I don't see Sony taking that leap.

@Dan Watson: have to correct you here when you say Sony a6700 has the largest native lens selection of any brand is only partially true. You did not take into account this camera is an APSC camera, and if you look at Sony’s native APSC specific selection, it is poor compared to say Fujifilm. Sure it is still E mount and people can mount a full frame lens on it, but wouldn’t this be completely defeating the purpose of an APSC platform? Despite how Sony has made great efforts to make their full frame lens more compact, it is still large and heavy, especially mounting them on this tiny small camera. And if people wants the best image quality out of this camera, realistically people have to shell out for the G master lenses which are expensive, large and heavy and because they are full frame lenses, not utilising the full potential of them that people have paid for. Might as well just get into full frame cameras. So it baffles me when many “Sony users” review this camera and call it “the BEST hybrid APSC camera in the world” or “the BEST budget hybrid APSC camera in the market”. I have to ask, compare to what exactly? Within the Sony ecosystem, yes of course. But it can never compete with Fujifilm’s APSC ecosystem, with much higher end cameras such as XH2S, XH2 and XT5. Even the entry level XS20, which uses last generation 26MP sensor is cheaper than the a6700 and yet still matches 98% of what the a6700 can do. Not to mention Fujifilm’s large and impressive “native APSC specific lens selections! Fujifilm’s XH2S is really the flagship of all APSC cameras on the market right now. Sure it is the most expensive, but it is the only APSC camera on the market today with a stacked sensor and it too does 4K 120P videos on top of 6K. And before any Sony fanboys on this channel crucify me, autofocus alone is not everything! Everybody knows Sony’s AF is worlds ahead of everyone else, this is not new. I’m a Fuji shooter (but not a fanboy), shooting the current XH2S and XH2 for professional work, I find it excellent for what I am able to do consistently, delivering results to clients. Sony’s autofocus, however excellent it is, will not improve my results at all even if I switch to Sony now. Just my thought.

I actually think of Sony's native full frame lenses as a positive thing. A lot of people getting a camera like this will eventually want to upgrade and full frame is a great way to get more quality from a sensor. The fact that you can start buying full frame capable lenses that will work when you get an upgrade camera is a benefit and Sony makes quite a few full frame lenses that are barely larger/heavier than Fuji. And you can even use your APSC lenses on a full frame camera in APSC mode if you haven't upgraded all your glass yet. I still think Fujifilm has the best APSC cameras like you said, although if you want something super compact/consumer, I think this edges out what Fuji has. But the main reason I recommend Fujifilm less often is they don't have a full frame camera and many people eventually want full frame. I have the XH2S and it's AWESOME and has unbeatable features for the price, but I don't use it as often just because I have full frame cameras that can offer more if you have more to spend. So I feel "capped" with Fuji a bit more. Again, if I had a $2500 budget and could ONLY buy 1 camera, yeah, the XH2S has way more features than the Canon R6II, but it would be tough to give up that full frame option so I'm torn. I do wish Fujifilm would work on the AF system a bit more...it's one of the few weaknesses but overall, it's an insane camera. My only real issue is that it wasn't until the XH2 series that Fujifilm could even compete with full frame cameras like the A7RV, Canon R5, Nikon Z8 and even now, I think having the option of full frame is an overall benefit if you have the extra $ to justify higher end cameras. But hopefully no one is saying that the XH2S is nothing short of stunning

@@learningcameras totally understand and respect your view. I do agree that it would be great if Fujifilm can keep improving their AF tracking capabilities but have no fantasy that it will match Sony’s, it’s just not what Fujifilm is about. I come from the old XT2, upgraded to XT4 three years ago and honestly, the AF wasn’t that bad if I stick with AF-S and forget about any sort of tracking as it was unusable. I had to shoot every action scene the old fashioned way of timing, anticipation, focus and recomposing. Fast forward to now, I’m rocking a XH2 and XH2S for my professional performing arts event jobs in dark theatre / concert halls with lots of fast action and I find the current firmware excellent for tracking. Finally I can leave my cameras in AFC and eye AF on and just shoot, it is amazing. I have tried Sony’s A74 and A1 before, but never ever liked the ergonomics, feeling in the hand and skin tones. The AF is superb but I do not feel it will improve my output anymore so than with the current generation of Fujifilm cameras. As for upgrade pathways, i actually saved up and got a used GFX100S and a couple of used lenses (GF80 1.7 and GF110 F2) for portrait work both outdoor and indoor. The AF again isn’t great, but good enough if I work a little harder while shooting. 11:28 Why wouldn't you call the AI Processor "AI"? There seems to be a real underlying trained artificial neural network for each subject type, that extracts position information from visual features. As artifical neural networks are part of machine learning and machine learning is part of the concept of "artifical intelligence", it very well makes the autofocus AI. An AI processor is a hardware accelerator for neural network processing, allowing for finer subject separation. Don't interpret it as "the processor is AI", but rather "it processes AI" - making it an AI processor.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 ай бұрын
Because it's really just being trained on a pre programmed set on information and it doesn't make any decisions beyond that. If it could see the frame and identify that my subject was a human, bird, or car, that would be closer to AI and Canon/Nikon do that. But all Sony's AI processor does is "look" to see if it has any attributes based on a set of database images I believe. I want an "AI" unit to make a decision and ideally make a decision that's right. The problem with Sony's AI system is you have to tell it the subject and if the subject isn't there, you have to manually turn it off because it will try and find a subject that isn't there. So when I wanted to take a picture of my camera, I had to turn off the AI system because it thought something off to the left was a subject (and there wasn't one) even though I had a focus point on the camera. Also for my car images it does a decent job finding the entire car but the second I want to photograph a wheel, spoiler, or interior, the AI tries to look for a car so it will prefer to focus on a car way in the background than the centercap of the wheel of the car I have my focus point on because it's just looking for an entire "car". It works well for portraits and animals though as long as you only want to focus on the eye so for that, It's amazing

Cue "Dream On", by Aerosmith. Stick an improved A6700 in an A7-style body, and you're looking at a $2000 price point. I'm not sure that would sell well enough to make it worth Sony's while. Maybe it would, but it would be a hard sell, to me, and a lot of APS-C shooters.

Yeah, the Sony a6700 is a beast and can do almost everything a lot better than previous a6xxx cameras, but does everyone need the 6700. The answer is no. Most people will never master the a6100 and spending $1400 plus tax for the body only is IMO, a waste of $$ for most people. Most would be far better served by buying a like new Sony a6100 from KEH or MPB for $650 and spend the difference on glass like the Sigma 16mm,30mm or 85mm f/1.4. In fact you can buy all three from KEH or MPB plus the a6100 for ~$1400.

Where the A6700 pays for itself is the AI AF and IBIS. For stills, IBIS is usually not necessary, but for video, at least handheld video, IBIS is a must. You can fix exposure, to a point, in post. You can fix, color, to a point, in post. You can't fix missed focus. The Sony A6xxx cameras have all had good AF, for the time of their release. But the AF on the A6700 The A6400 isn't a bad stills camera, especially with the recent price drop. Especially for static subjects. But if the subject is moving, the AI Autofocus if the A6700 is superior. If you're trying to get that cool shot of a bee on a flower, the A6700 is far more likely to get it right, because the AI can be told to lock onto the insect. With the A6400, you'd have to put the camera in high speed burst and blaze away, hoping to get 1-2 good frames out of a couple of dozen.

Well, in Sony's defense, overheating is because they are now oversampling 26mp 4k60 10bit 422 which is much more taxing than what they used to do. It's more that the specs are overpowering the body limits. I'd prefer it to overheat than lower specs but I'd prefer a few extra mm of room for venting than overheating this quickly. But it would be ever so slightly bigger and they have the FX30 that doesn't overheat

As you complain, may I take you back to 1975 and slip a Nikon F into your hands. After using that monster of a camera, tell me how bad the a6700 is??????? You have much more than you can handle. And, if you can't take a picture or video with this camera, get out of the business and take up knitting. This is a tiny camera, a very compact camera compared to my ancient A7R3. But the benefits are there: light weight, smaller lenses, EVF, flippy screen, A7R5 autofocus, the latest Bionz XR chipset and the new AI chip, rugged body, larger grip, etc. Topping it off is an extensive lineup of lens from Sony and 3rd party manufacturers, and the cost is very reasonable at $1,400.

Sorry man, but you have no idea on the needs of sport and wildlife photographers. Forget the viewfinder that it is impossible to judge focus with and single card slot that can cost you loosing one in a lifetime photo. Do you realize how much a songbird or a swallow or a volleyball / baseball can do in a fraction of a second? 11fps is laughable! This is worst spec in contemporary APS-C segment. And the 40 frames buffer? It is embarassing for 26Mpix files. If it had 20fps like it should have at the very least, you would do nothing with this in the field. Also buffer clearing time doesn't look particularily impressive. Canon R7 and OM-1 clears equally fast despite much faster frame rates. No comparison to cameras with CFexpress cards.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 ай бұрын
Wait...the slower frame rate was literally my big negative I pointed out! Did you watch the review??? Mentioned it several times that this was NOT ideal for those cases or for more prosumer/pro things like weddings. I said this was a good compact option for travel/consumer type shoots. Although I do think compressed RAW would be absolutely fine for sports/wildlife and that gets you 80+ images in the buffer which is like 9 seconds of shooting and it clears fast enough to be ready for the next set in 3-5 seconds. But I'm not sure why you think I would recommend this for sports/wildlife...I said the opposite
@przybylskipawel
@przybylskipawel 10 ай бұрын
@@learningcameras I think you understated it and tried to diminish importance of this weakness. However, to be honest I posted this comment before watching whole review, instead I posted it as soon as you stayted at the beginning that 11fps is enough for sport and wildlife, which is definitely not. Also I meant that the buffer capacity would not be enough IF the camera has been shooting as fast as it should given sensor readout speed (data bus too slow throughput - skimped) and competition's mechanical shutter performance (15fps - Sony skimped again). With increased speed of drive modes its buffer capacity would become insufficient as the clearing tempo from UHS-II card would create a bottleneck. Sony skimped on CFexpress type A combo card slot as well. It is not a problem to get 80+ pictures in a buffer when you shoot that slow and give so much time for the buffer to clear. This indicates that Sony skimped also on buffer memory module. Sports and wildlife are especially dependant on EVF quality. Not only on refresh rate, but also on resolution, magnification and eye-relief and again Sony skimped also on that component. Also I cannot imagine serious wildlife, sport but even wedding shooting for that matter without redundancy in storage media. Bottom line is that this is not only not the best camera for sports/wildlife. This camera is INSUFFICIENT for that purpose which you seem to water down. However, if you feel offended by my comment, I can delete it.

@@przybylskipawel Not offended by the comment...I just don't think I said what you stated. My conclusion at 15:00 says if you need the things you mentioned especially for weddings/sports/wildlife, the "DOESN'T quite get you there" The only thing I said was probably good enough for sports/wildlife was the 80 image buffer which is 7+ seconds of shooting, and again, FOR THE PRICE!!! This is a $1400 camera and I'm pretty sure it's the fastest or one of the fastest mechanical shutters in any camera that was introduced below $1400. Would I buy it for sports? Nope. Do I think it's good enough at $1400, yep. Sony deliberately priced this below the Fujifilm X-T5 and Canon R7 because have a few features. I'm not disagreeing with what you said at all...but this isn't designed or marketed as a sports/wildlife camera... clearly this was designed as a consumer camera prioritizing small size so again so I don't think I was diminishing the difference between 11fps and something like the Canon R7's 15fps which is the closest in price. 11fps is absolutely plenty for most of the people this camera was designed and marketed for
