The Sony A7RII review has probably been the most excited I have been about a camera in quite a few years and for a good reason, Sony pulled out all the stops and threw everything plus the kitchen sink in this A7RII. I don't care what you shoot and who you shoot it for, you need the Sony a7R II in your bag. But don't take my word for it, check out the full hands on review.

I mentioned to another well known camera reviewer that for 30 mins of talking I would have liked to of seen a whole lot more sample photos and he basically got offended and told me "he always finds it funny when people want to see more photos...because the youtube compression is so bad he doesnt waste his time putting up that many photos." I was like.....okkkkk. I can't stand listening to someone talk for 30 or even 10 minutes and nothing to show for it. rant over. lol

my favorite feature on the 5D is the joystick for fast focus point selection for photography, event photography and those moments where i only have a few seconds to get it right. how fast is focus point selection on the a7r mark2? great video, i like how you explain details from actually using the camera in professional work situations, not just a review from someone who returns the camera afterwards & never uses it in a professional way.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
+Photographic Elements Hey, Thanks! So the A7s is certainly not as good for moving focus points as the 5D3 because the d-pad also scrolls and it is way to easy to accidentally scroll instead of moving left/right/up/down. You get used to the sensitivity eventually but It's definitely not my favorite d-pad for controlling the camera.

when you get a chance, i would love to see a review on the new pentax k1. (..vs sony a7r ii (..vs nikon d810 vs canon 5dii)). was not able to find a lens adapter for canon or nikon lenses to the k1, is that flange distance issue, like canon fd lenses? thanks, look forward to all your upcoming reviews.

There's a big problem. The Sony A7RII can't track to save it's life and before anyone comments, I own the A7RII and it's the greatest camera I have ever used - except when it comes to tracking. Sony G lenses suffer from focus shifting i.e. the focus acquired when the lens is wide open shifts when the lens closes to a smaller preset aperture. So they "solved" this issue, via a firmware update, by changing the focusing system. It now acquires a basic lock wide open, then closes to the preset aperture, refocuses and then tries to track. Unfortunately at f8 the awesome phase detection AF disables and the camera hunts like you wouldn't believe! I was using a 200mm lens at a fashion show and at under 30 feet the area of focus is less than 3 feet using f8. So to ensure I got the clothing sharp I set the aperture at f8 and my lens hunted and missed the focus time and time again! Remember, the models were walking at less than 5mph and it could even track that speed. I switched to my other telephotos, all top lenses and it happened with each and every one of them. Sony are aware of the problem and have been for over a year since they have been inundated with compaints about this.The majority of owners have requested a firmware update allowing a choice of focusing either wide open or closed - and they've done nothing. Don't believe me, try it and see what happens or if you haven't the time go on the net and look it up, you'll find lots of complaints on the subject. So if you want an awesome camera for motionless subjects get the A7RII but if you shoot subjects that move, forget it and buy a DSLR. One last thought... I was considering buying the new A9 and then I realised if Sony have wrecked the A7RII with this via the firmware what's to stop them doing it with the A9? Be wary buying either of them. In the meantime I and many thousands of others are stuck with a camera that's fine as long as what we shoot is basically dead and not moving until Sony get there finger out and fix the problem. One unhappy A7RII owner...

Because of its size, this is a mountain photography camera. I don't care about the other venues. For me it is the right size and weight and has great small native lenses. When backpacking, the camera and lenses better not weigh more than my bear canister!

nice job Mr. Watson, really enjoyed the video, I actually watched it twice in a row, but wish you would of put the lens being used under all the still images, and I love the camera but still wish it had a fully articulating TOUCH SCREEN and dual sd card slots, but without gaining more weight, I hear the eye focusing only works with Native glass, but I would like to know how good it works at f1.4 or f1.8, also I don't think you mentioned what adaptor you were using, I would like to know if it works with Sigma primes, including the non Art primes like the 50 and 85 f1.4, and the Tamron 24/70 VC, because I saw one video where the guy said his adaptor didn't work with those lenses, and how does the VC or IS work along with the Sony IBIS ? I was also curious about the Canon 70/200 f2.8 with the Canon 2X converter with your adaptor on the A7r ll, I also saw a different review where the guy said the focusing wasn't good with his 400 and 500mm Canon primes, so i'm wondering if it's just his adaptor, so i'm sure allot of people would love to see a really good adaptor comparison done with the A7r ll, I would really love to know what the best adaptor is, because I know some adaptors are better than others, and are you going to test the Batis 85 f1.8, I would like to see the eye focus at f1.8, and also on the Sony 55 f1.8 and 35 f1.4, I'm also curious how the Sony 35 f1.4 compares the the Sigma 35 Art, please get all these answers to me fast, haha i'm joking, I know I'm asking allot, thanks Daniel

photographerjonathan The Adapter is in the description under the video and I go over it more in a separate video but it will not work with any non canon lens or lens before 2006. Other adapters may work but this one does not. I think these adapters have issues with infinity focus and thus the longer lenses do not work as well with AF as wider lenses. Even my 70-200 focuses better at 70 than 200. I have a link to the other AF video at 6:09 in this video.

Nice review! Bit of a downer that Sony is pushing towards micro payments for apps on an already expensive camera. Also FYI, I think you should balance your volumes a bit; I had to adjust my volume up to hear you, but when it came to the music about a 1:40 it was blaring.

thanks for the great review. i trust the adapter for canon glass was reliable allowing you to control iris (you'd said the AF was too flaky for video but i am used to 5d3 MF only anyway but looking at 4k options without switching away from EF glass). also would that adapter allow use of the recent EF versions of sigma art 35 and 50 do you think? also, any high frame rate 120fps+ options here? thanks again. joe
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Casey Photography Hey Joe. I had no issues with iris control and the adapters worked perfectly for that. The adapters 'State' that they only work with Canon lenses after 2006 and that seems to be the case. My Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC (fairly new) lens does not work however I have had several people contact me though that the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.4 DO work but I have not tried those personally. Check out my recent video on the adapters though: learningcameras.com/reviews/dslr-reviews-3/348-metabones-iv-vs-fotodiox-canon-ef-to-sony-e-adapters

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
+Afif Faiq Thanks. I would be leaning towards the A7RII. It really does both so well there is no reason for anything else. If you rarely need to shoot above 800iso, you could consider the A7R and GH4 but the A7RII is better than the GH4 for video and better than the a7r for photos so I would be leaning with 1 of those. If you ever find you need a 2nd backup camera, consider the Sony A6300

Elemino Musgrove The time limit is 29 minutes and 59 seconds. Tony Northrup tested it and it did overheat after arround 20 minutes. Mileage may vary depending on outdoor temperature wind shade indoors. And even flipping the LCD out can help extending the time a bit. If you need 4k video for long durations this may not be your camera. That being said it is bloody impressive nonetheless.

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
+Pongpat Likitchollatarn Pretty big difference because while the A7II was OK, it wasn't quite good enough for me to rely on thus I rarely used it. The A7RII is the first time I was actually relying on AF and hitting my target when using Sony lenses. It's not that it is a night and day difference, but it's finally getting good enough to depend on. I wish it was a bit more fluid but it still works well

+adam hanly If you mostly shoot video and don't need 4k (or don't mind getting a 4k recorder), get the A7s. If you shoot images as well or want 4k (though you will need to record it externally due to overheating if you need to record 4k for more than 20-30 min straight), definitely go with the A7Rii. The A7RII is great in low light but the A7s will be much better above 3200ISO

Hi, as usual, me and my questions, I want you to know that I really appreciate all your responses. This is for the Sony A7-MK2, I have the 55mm 1.8 lens, my problem is installing the Hoya NXT circular polarizing filter, i’m sure you know that the threads on the lens are a little bit recessed and it’s a kind of difficult to screw it on, not to mention trying to unscrew it, after a couple of seconds of turning it counterclockwise to take it off I realized that all I was turning was the adjustable part of the filter. Do you have any suggestions for putting it on and off? I was very careful not to cross thread anything, after being in the plumbing business most of my life I know what it is. LOL

LearningCameras.com I appreciate your prompt response and suggestion, but i’m not happy with sony, this is my first digital camera, this lens cost me over a thousand dollars, I never thought that I would have to by adapters so that I can use filters, I don’t know if nikon and canon have the issue with some filters, but maybe I should have done a little more research before I got this camera. Again, thank you very much for your response. Rick.

A late answer, but perhaps others will benefit: it will fit and work, but this is a crop factor lens, so the image will be surrounded by a black circle. You can use crop modes that will solve this, but of course you'll lose resolution.

I'm really considering buying the sony over the canon, but does the sony really AF reliably and quickly with canon glass?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
TetsusaigaDrgn It's quick but only in ideal circumstances. I found it had difficulty with infinity focus as well as with telephoto lenses. I couldn't test it with many of my lenses either because they are from Sigma & Tamron which will not work and it also will not work with Canon lenses older than 2006.

what are the crop modes with this camera? super35 AND super16?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
+Photographic Elements Yes on the super 35 and you will definitely want to use that for video as the quality and low light performance is better but only use it for video. You can also do an APS-C crop with the non full frame e mount lenses but I never used that

What lens Would you prefer for landscape Photography
@learningcameras

I personally use a 16-35mm for landscape. The F4 by Sony is decent but a little soft in the corners wide open. The 16-35mm F2.8 is a bit better

What about the fact it over heats when shooting 4k video for longer than 15/20 minutes....! This happened to us this week, best to stick to the A7S
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
duncanalecfilms It should definitely not overheat in 1080p or with a recorder to record the 4k so either way you are no better off with the A7s
@duncanalecfilms
@duncanalecfilms 9 жыл бұрын
Not 1080p, but shooting in 4k internally for 15/20 minutes continuously the camera overheats. EOSHD documented this the other week but from testing it out, this is true. It's useless when shooting a long interview or similar. Real shame lovely camera, but not good enough.
@YananoBere
@YananoBere 9 жыл бұрын
duncanalecfilms I believe the point is you can't even shoot 4k on the AS7 anyway so sticking with it is no better. Also, 20 minutes is a very generous limit for internal 4k recording. Most phones & cameras can't get past 5. They may improve the cooling system or architecture of the chip with the A7S ii though.
@duncanalecfilms
@duncanalecfilms 9 жыл бұрын
Yanano Bere you can shoot 4k with an A7S with an atamos shogun or other external recorder. Indeed 20 minutes is generous but if you're filming a conference, wedding, or an interview I wouldn't recommend it. Comparing the camera to a phone is pointless, this is suppose to be a professional camera. If they improve the cooling system then brilliant. This camera is best for B-roll, BTS, stock but I wouldn't use it on set, at the moment.

Zombie Clown Seems to be a potential issue but only after 30-45 min of straight 4k recording. Not an issue with 1080p or external recorders though.

Hi Dan Really appreciate your video's on this camera, and others. I wonder if you could help me as my Sony A7Rii is producing poorly colored photos in non auto modes. In auto, and scene, modes the colors are fine and vibrant. It's just in A, M, S, and P modes that I'm getting terribly dark, and colorless images, and the camera even bumps up the shutter speed, and ISO, to produce such images. Any advice would be appreciated.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
So check that you don't have exposure compensation set to something weird. Also, check that your picture profile is not set to anything until you figure out what the issue is.

Hi Dan, thanks for replying. I have discovered that I had the picture profile set to PP7 (I think that you may have recommended it in another video), and turning that off has solved it. Cheers.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
Cool, glad that fixed it. PP7 is a log file (slog) and MUST be edited. It is super flat with almost no color/contrast in the image until you apply a LUT in post during color grading. It also requires that you are at 800ISO or higher which probably threw off your exposure. It allows more dynamic range and is great for color matching other cameras but it requires some work to shoot using slog.

As for battery life... I have 3 batteries. What I do is when one battery dies I take it out and put it into a USB battery charger (www.amazon.com/dp/B00P66QS8G/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_img?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2Y6S776W9610G&coliid=I1AC21IHG7EF6Q) that is hooked up to a Jackery Giant+ Dual USB Portable Battery Charger & External Battery Pack (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AANQLRI/ref=s9_al_bw_g107_i4) I have no problems keeping batteries charged while on the go. No need to buy a zillion batteries.

"Amazing" - where's the focus here? at 07:48 ? it the people are soft, the lamps are soft, the clouds are worse... is the focus on the grass in the foreground? really?... in the preceding shots at 07:20 highlights were blown out... is this what I can expect to capture? :(
