Epoxy and super glues worked for me, but it takes some practice to apply it right. Someone out there sells the plastic part that broke, but it is hard to take apart. It really sucks, but hopefully you can fix it.

The Sony tech is nice though. I think I finally found a way to get it to hold together. I used that water weld epoxy that comes in a tube and you mash it up like playdough. I used super glue on the inside of the broken parts of the frame then hit it with the ca accelerator to make that dry. Then I rolled the puddy epoxy into a long snake and carefully wrapped it around it. So far that has held.

That part of the plastic is about 1mm thick. I believe too much rotation force against the stop is what starts the crack. Also, my experience with other plastics is that going from hot car to winter cold over and over again eventually makes it brittle. Also direct sunlight seems to destroy a lot of common plastic, but not really some kinds of plastic like the military box I had that is designed to be tossed out a plane and parachute to the ground holding special equipment such as computers. That plastic green box sat for 10 years and the sun and did not change.

Find that video on how to take it apart. They sell the plastic part for $30 and they seem to have positive feedback on it. If you can't find video let me know. Also, it is on sale somewhere again slightly under $250. Who knows, perhaps it is stronger now from the manufacturer, but I doubt it. I did notice Target removed it from the display soon after I examined it about 2 months ago. I expect this to be a common issue.

@@jstewart627 yep it very common, i found like a lot of reddit talking about it, i manage to fixed mine, using 3D print, spend like $5, but yeah, to unassemble it, it took me like 27-30 unscrew and fiddle with small part, before i can reach that part to replace the broken part

i almost give up in middle, but sony service centre itself, asking usd 75 to fix it.... which you are right.. nowadays you can get it about usd200-250... i agreed with you, its a flimsy plastic, that get degraded if you use it everyday... and they ask $75 for it... to replace it

The Sony sound quality to me is better than the Beats and the noise cancelling too, but the Beats is still nice. The newer Sony might have fixed the issue, it looks different. I sent my video to Sony when they told me they would not fix it.... No response.

It would be nice if all of us could get together for a class action lawsuit. I am mad about this, but my wife bought another set of same headphones and is treating them like thin glass. I expect them to break in 1 to 2 years. They do sound much better than Beats Studio 3, which we just got, but the beats look like they will not break with the way they fold down. I could only find one person selling the part, it is hard to find the guy, and I don't know if it is a good buy for $30 each, I just glued it and use it myself now as I don't care about the glued look. Make sure you submit a complaint to Sony. I did send them a link to my video when Sony refused to give me money for repairs.

I compared them to beats studio 3 and the Sony sounds much better. The XM5 is not on display but the band does look different. I hope they fixed it, but time will tell. Also, it is normal to be putting some force on it when putting on and taking off. We all need to keep up communicating products with what looks like flaws or planned self distruction.

Someone did make the part for $30 each using plastic mold injection tool. Epoxy did not work for me but a lot of super glue worked but I used an accelerator spray. I put some glue on them sprayed it, waited like 5 minutes, then put more glue on it then sprayed it. Has to be done in layers and that accelerator spray makes the glue harden too quickly sometimes, so it takes practice to figure out a way to keep it from hardening when you did not want it to.

You can find someone who 3d printed the part. A lot of glue worked for me.

A lot of super glue put on in layers. Put a layer on and spray with inta set spray for super glue then put another layer. Do this about 3-5 times. Then I used water weld. Made a snake out of it and wrapped it around the frame. That held everything together so far, but it does not fold up. It was my wife's headphones. She bought another set on sale, same ones and I use the broken one with all that glue. You have to get good with super glue first before doing this. I build RC planes, you have to go to proper hobby store to find the super glue accelerator. Super glue does not grab and flex like epoxy, epoxy is super strong and grippy and usually used for parts that vibrate a lot like the firewall of the airplane motor mount. Know and understand this and you will be way more skilled when working with glues now. My trick I figured out is used the super glue with insta set to get things held together in that awkward position that clamps can not help you with, after that dries with acceleration spray, then do the epoxy job. That is what I had to do with these headphones, you can't clamp oddly shaped things. You better practice by gluing oddly shaped sticks without clamps.

I was looking at the newer model and I don't think it has the flawed thin part. Also, we have the studio beats. They are nice, but the Sony sounds a little better, but they still are nice.

Also, Sony warranty refused to replace them for this kind of issue. I bet they get a lot of calls for the same problem now that we see how many responded to the video. There are other videos out there about this too.

Water self and super glue to hold things in place for water weld to set. Use a super glue kicker also. I was able to make it stay together with careful glue work. Don't give that company more money until the issue is gone. This has been happening to many people and I think they still sell that same headphones with that thin plastic part.

I attached my video and emailed it to Sony along with my rejected case. I am annoyed with Sony right now as they basically are calling it use damage and they refused to pay me my request of $50. I do not really want to spend the 1-2 hours repairing this. I made a fair offer to remedy my disappointment in this product. planned obsolescence is a real problem for consumers. Business is basically trying to make us basically pay a continuous rent. Who knows if the weak part in the headphones was intentional. My experience with plastics is that some hold up for many years, some I have that are fine after 10 years, and some become brittle within a year. There is a stamp on the bottom of plastic containers ranging from 1-20, the 1 and 2 quality that I have used will shatter after a year or 2 but the 8 and 10 quality that I have used have not become brittle after 10 years. Look for a quality 10 for a cooler

The best fix that worked for me was to fill is with super glue then wrap it with putty water weld epoxy, but some have found parts, not me.
