A superb review. Thank you Maarten. I like the subtle change from black & white to colour when you mention the red and white RCA plugs. I knew your shirt had to be something special, and it is. Where was I? Ah yes, the HX500 turntable. I'm now persuaded to buy one and to revisit my hefty LP collection which has remained boxed and unused for nearly thirty years. Cheers.

Thank you for the kind words, which are always appreciated. I'll do my best, but admittedly, they're difficult as the equipment isn't very visual, there's lots to say that can't be shown or conveyed in a video and it nearly always requires copyrighted content.
@orangeActiondotcom
@orangeActiondotcom 7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it can be difficult, and perhaps this is why HiFi writers quickly devolve into how 'musical' the 'performance' of each component is. KZfaqr 'techmoan' finds a way to do this that I find enjoyable, but he rarely investigates components or formats that are available on the market today. If you aren't already familiar with his videos, you may find some inspiration there.

No, you can connect it with USB to any device (ie computer) that accepts a USB input for audio. There is no need to use an amp or speakers. Quality does not change if devices are (or not) connected.

You sound like a concise and well mannerd person, I am retiring this year and am torn between this Sony, and the Audio Technica At LP 5 turntable. @MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. There are likely many turntables that will serve you well, but in this case, I recommend the Sony - a heavier turntable is always better than a lighter one. However, if you have a local and respectable audio store, drop by and have a listen. They likely won't have either of these choices, and you'll likely end up spending a little more, but I suspect the results will be worth it. There are still many manufacturers devoted to making quality turntables.

Sorry to comment on such an old video, but did you by any chance render the video in mono or was the vinyl at 9:33 mono? Because the track has a far better stereo effect on the The Intentions Topic channel. If none of the above, is there any way to improve the stereo effect on vinyl?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 3 жыл бұрын
That's the stereo as recorded on vinyl. Haven't you heard? Mono is the new stereo! Yes, there are multiple apps and other hardware to make changes to spatial orientation and render a larger sound stage, typically they work by doing slight temporal shifts that differ across the frequency bands. Not a fan.

@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated. It's very difficult and subjective to try to tease out the sound of a turntable when the contribution made by the cartridge and pre-amp used and the state of the record being played plays such a large role. For me, the attraction of this turntable is primarily its high-res digital capability. Overall, I found it to be reasonably transparent as a transport system.
@wintertrader
@wintertrader 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Maarten for your response. I wish you Happy New Year, health and happiness. Indeed the HI RES capability is very attractive. I should also mention that the price of the unit as we speak is very OK for a good quality entry level. Because of this HI RES capability, I would probably prefer it to the Rega.

Can switch the cartridge with Ortofon 2M blue? Been reading different thing about switching cartridges, Sony says you can't switch (sony-eur-eu-en-web--eur.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/133703/~/frequently-asked-questions-(faqs)-about-the-ps-hx500) but other forums says you can... Wanted to ask here since your video made me want to buy one, and I wanted to be sure if it can be switched. Thanks, hope you'll reply.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
Although it will require a certain level of expertise, and the tools to re-align the counterweight and anti-skating, I would assume that it is possible to mount most cartridges in the head shell. These are skills that were more common and understood in the last millennium, when swapping cartridges was a fairly common task. The Sony materials say that it's not supported, not that it won't work. However, I have to say that this is not something that I've tried, so I can't provide the assurance you seek. The only challenge I can imagine is that the mounting screws on the Ortofon don't line up. Not sure if you have a friendly local dealer who can assist, or provide further guidance. My local dealer (Bay Bloor in Toronto) has a weekly turntable clinic, where such questions can be asked and such assistance provided.
@Arlaat
@Arlaat 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I live in Greenland so turntable dealers are not something that are common, only ones I've seen are portable Crosley which I'm not too keen on buying since I've read it eats your LP's, and the store did not provide any knowledge on Sony HX500 since it's not available in stores here. So purchasing a cartridge takes a lot more online research and it's difficult to imagine which parts are good for upgrading since online information is still pretty limited. I'm gonna give it a go anyway, I haven't found other products that interest me when it comes to turntables, maybe it'll be easier to decide whether I should buy Ortofon 2M blue to replace the stylus/cartridge that comes with the HX500. Again, thanks for the reply.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
That does make it difficult ... if you have some experience and confidence, I think you'll find it a manageable task. I also think that you might need an alternate pre-amp with that cartridge - but it is a moving magnet, so likely it is compatible. I would have a listen to the kit cartridge first and then decide if you need to order the upgrade.

You might as well be searching for an open reel deck. Optical drives have nearly disappeared from the marketplace. I would have recommended either Linn or Simaudio, but neither have an optical player in their current lineup - and I haven't even auditioned one in years. Consider (maybe a little over the top) the Bryston BOP transport and BDP decoder/player. Luxman does have several (SACD capable - which I would recommend) models, but I'm not really familiar with them - maybe that's your best bet.

If I send the output from the PS HX500 or any other TT to an audio interface inputs and record the signal I will get better quality 24bit 192khz opposed to 24bit 96khz from Sony's internal DAC.So the DSD function while sounding great can be passed on, if one has a dedicated audio interface.Still I'm going to get this TT along with its dedicated audio reciever STRDH190, which both were meant ot work in tandem.

It is actually for value-conscious Nikon owners who would like to have a versatile lens for daylight scenes with an extended zoom. If the purpose of this is to transfer high def resolution from a record then that would not be a good audio cartridge . You need at least a elliptical stylus to pick up as much detail as you can.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
That's why they made this with a replaceable cartridge.
@marcp.1752
@marcp.1752 2 жыл бұрын
The phono cartridge of the HX500 is simply a unlabeled Audio-Technica AT-91 cartrdige setup, which is a modest cheapskate stylus. I got this record player very cheap. Much better than using the cheapish AT-91 without exchanging the cartridge is the AT-3651 pickup with "nudeline" stylus, without removing the whole AT-91 from the headshell. I just bought this stylus, but into 2022, i'll exchange it for a Goldring E3. It's nothing compared to my LP12 Linn from the 90s, but at least, after more than 23 years, i have a record player again.

@@MaartenHeilbron I just bought one a few weeks ago. Like it as a turntable, less convinced about the hi-res recording, though it works. But is it really hi-res?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
@@simonbellsinger What is your definition of hi-res? Did you look at the file's settings for bandwidth and bit depth? The issue is that hi-res can't improve the quality if the record itself is damaged or the original quality wasn't very good. It can only capture what's there using the hi-res settings.
@simonbellsinger
@simonbellsinger 4 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron I'm realising that. It's false selling really. I've only recorded pristine records but the recordings don't sound as good as digital download copies; I guess because they have been remastered. I even bought a Sony Hi-res player

@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Why would you want to replace a classic?
@Zockopa
@Zockopa 6 жыл бұрын
A "classic" in itself has no worth except its better,and it is still way better. I wonder why that is after decades of technical advancement. They just had to put the plans for,say, a PS-LX5 out of the drawer,overhaul it for timely demand,and they would own the market in the affordable class by now.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
The benefit here of course, is not the new turntable, but the ability to digitize at high quality - however, you'll find outboard devices (and software) that does the same thing.

Well,the idea to combine a turntable with a phonopre and a analog to digital converter with USB connectivity is a good one - in principle. However,Sony did way better in the past before ordering in China.
@MaartenHeilbron

I find your comment to be an unfair over-generalization. There are many companies, including Apple and Sony who use Chinese manufacturing to create high quality products, that meet the same quality standards for products made elsewhere.

3 grams down force? My Audio Technica cartridge only requires 1.25 grams. That's the way you give maximum output of the record without wearing out the vinyl.
