The analysis in this video is based on this particular set of circumstances, which is outside, and the sun as a back light. I will conduct these test again with more optimal lighting conditions, with 2 x Z6's one with the 35mm Sony and one with the 35mm native Z. And we can asses how they perform in a more controlled environment. Also the adapter works well, but I do not believe it is as good as native lenses. I also think Sony lenses will vary with their mileage, and I would suggest individual lenses need to be tested on the adapter before committing to an expensive lens purchase.

It's worth remembering that AF lenses know nothing about face detect AF. That's the camera's job - the lens simply actuates its AF motors in accordance with the camera's instructions.

Thanks for covering this! I am mainly a Nikon shooter, but did get into Sony for a "fun" walk-around camera as my Nikon's were big DSLR's and acquired a few Sony lenses. Now that I recently hopped into Nikon Z, this seems like a great tool to get some extra mileage out of those FE lenses!

I think, the biggest advantage of newer lens (Nikon S) is the bigger mount. As an optician I think, that it is easier to construct good optics with bigger mounts. There are more vertical beams hitting the sensor.....

Interesting video as always. I'm wondering what the technological differences between different Sony E mount adapters are. I recently tested the first version of the Techart adapter with a relatively new lens, the 35/1.4 GMaster and it didn't work (at least not on the Z 6 body). I even tried to update the firmware in the adapter but that didn't work either. I'm wondering if the newer adapters like the Megadap or the second generation of the Techart would take the lens. Or in general, if there is a key to what lenses are supported on which adapter. I would be quite interested in adapting the 16-35/2.8 GMaster, as it is a focal range that can't be found for the Z mount yet (and we don't know if it ever will) because I would take a 16-35 over 14-24 any time. For my use case it's much more universal.

Sony does have some excellent APS-C lenses that I would not mind adapting For the most part, I see these adapters as a way for people to use both Nikon and Sony cameras without entirely switching systems. I would love to also see adapters for the Canon mirrorless mount as well. That could make the Z-mount king of all mirrorless mounts

Nice video Matt, but are you testing the Megadap E2Z, or the camera's face/eye tracking for a subject moving backwards? If it is the Z camera's firmware that is to blame here the you uncovered a weakness that needs to be sorted out a.s.a.p. in the next firmware release. My thoughts go out to old American blues songs that start as a sort of prayer like "Please Mr. President" and lament about all sorts of injustice. The variant being, "Please Mr. Nikon san".

I have just had another chat similar in regard to this topic of focus tracking. And from my overall use of the Z system testing I think it is a mix of lens age (pre face tracking/video full time focusing needs), adapter, ambient lighting conditions and camera. I believe they all play a part. The 50mm lens was not working as well as the 24-105. So this suggests it is perhaps a non video optimised lens or the 'lens logic' is pre face tracking needs - same camera, same adapter, different lens. The adapter I think is close to native performance in non extreme, optimal conditions (with a good lens) but not the same. Similar. And the camera, I have noted in optimal lighting works very very well. For example my studio, focus sticks. Forward, back etc. But I have noted in situations where I place the sun behind me, a high backlight situation, the camera mileage can vary from a focus tracking perspective. In a similar sort of way the chromatic aberration can very greatly with even the slightest changes in angle of attack of light, focal length, focus etc. Further testing is required. For optimal results I would always choose native everything. But for those perhaps on a budget, or those that have a large number of non native glass this can be a solid option. These test also where with an earlier firmware, this was recorded 2 weeks ago and I have since been informed there is a newer version. As we can see by looking at the firmware updates megadap.net/etz11-firmware/ Individual Sony lenses are improved. This suggest to me that there is the potential for programming for individual lenses. And the adapter is a bridge between Sony and Nikon protocols. If this is the case indeed very old Sony lenses may have not been prioritised ... Of course this is all speculation. Overall there is more to this than just the Z system. And I think the adapters and lenses can have a lot to do with out comes. Cheers Matt

@@MattIrwinPhotography - thank you for your in-depth reply. As I have a Z camera with native lenses only, you put my mind at rest. Something I don't have to verify myself shortly. As to video versus stills AF, note that in stills, the camera focuses at f/5.6 where it has more DoF than at full open and can more easily identify subjects it needs to recognize. In video at wide apertures we don't have that advantage and potentially need a focus-puller assistant ;)

I just purchase the adapter for the new samyang sony mount135.f 1.8....for my z 7.2 Nikon. . Nikon seem to have great lenses that cover lots of ranges but the 135 mm is a prime range that most professionals really need. So where is the Nikon Z 135 ?. Reading the reviewing the samyang 135 given the sigma 135 is not the newest version and Sonys is double the price and seem most reviews about samyang 135 It being better or at least it's equal . I black mailed father Christmas and it's on the way . The problem is there seems to be only one version of an adapter availbe for Sony to nikon mount. I am using the z 2. What I found that updating the dater on lenses and camera has had noticeable improved its colour results. My question is will the samyang or Sony lenses have firmware for Nikon how does work does it not matter?i am not sure how the firmware dater works out side of same make kend to camera.any chance you could share with us the pros and cons of mix and match lenses adapters firmware ? The Sony sensors used in Nikon cameras probably have the same sensor stack as sensors in Sony cameras. Sony lenses are corrected for this stack, which makes for good corner sharpness when adapting wide lenses to the Nikon Z mount. It is this sensor stack that causes a reduction in edge sharpness when adapting wide Canon lenses to Sony.

@Photogopinion Yes they do. This is what introduced all the wide angle problems when people started to use Canon lenses on Sony cameras - the Sony sensor stack introduces field curvature. Sony lenses compensate for the optical characteristics of the sensor stack. People originally blamed problems on adapters, but that turned out to be incorrect. There are some interesting articles online regarding this issue.

I'm in the same boat... but for me, I would LOVE to just be able to run Nikon Z glass on a Sony body, but I don't think it's actually possible due to flange sizes and depths. The Nikon flange depth is only 16mm, whereas Sony's is 20mm, meaning the rear element on a Nikon lens cannot mount close enough to project a clear image on the sensor. This, along with the fact that the Z mount flange is a larger diameter than the E mount flange as well. SIGH. As for the F-mount... well, there are plenty of 'alright' Nikon F/G series adapters for the Sony platform, but none with great reviews that will adapt F/E series lenses...
