The D100 is indeed the best travel recorder. The good: - battery life - very good built-in mics and preamps - minijack mic-in with decent voltage plug-in power - good headphone amp - built in memory as well as SD card (in case you forget to replace the SD card before leaving!) - 192 kHz - lots of physical controls and switchable backlight (pity controls aren’t illuminated though) - really solidly made - physical distance between capsules in “ORTF” mode for slight time-difference stereo - really quick boot up The bad: - inexplicable discontinuation without an equivalent replacement - always limited distribution outside Japan - no XLRs with phantom power - no charging of batteries via USB The meh - DSD recording Let’s hope Sony are developing the PCM D150 with 32-bit float and XLRs

@@FreeToUseSounds The Art Phantom II is one option. It comes out on XLRs but this can be easily adapted to minijack TRS. You'll have to get a Sony A10 next, it's one I have with me at all times along with a pair of Clippies.

They did make a replacement and it's called the PCM-D10. It's pretty much the D100 with two xlr inputs. It's for sale in America and elsewhere and the only problem getting one is they seem to sale out of them from time to time. I had to wait a few months to get mine but it was worth it. It doesn't have 32 bit float and a fancy screen but that is also one reason why the battery life is so great. I love my D10 and use it almost daily.

I too own this excellent device and am so happy to see one in your skilled hands now too. Gratifying to see your reaction. I had wanted one for years and finally snagged what I felt might have been one of the last ones to go through B&H a year or so ago (though I’ve seen one pop up here an there since). This is possibly my favorite device of all time along with my Teenage Engineering TX-6 Field Mixer. Enjoy this instrument and thanks for your great content as always!

Own it. love it. I will say though, the mic's are THAT good, sometimes getting ultra quiet sounds is a pain because of how good the mic's pick up other noise. You have to go out far away from the mechanical sounds of life to get really clean recordings (usually freeway/road noise is the biggest annoyance). I love mine, and it looks like an old Sony high end walkman from the 90's. Also +1 for Sony's packaging and unboxing experience, you will NOT want to throw away the box because it arrives in packaging like a royal entourage would arrive in court. Well done Sony.

D100: by far the finest sounding and most reliable portable recorder I have ever used, having owned several maranz, tascams, zooms and the like over the years. It´s a comparatively small unit which fires up in seconds and lasts for DAYS on 4 rechargeables, like a pro DSLR of audio. Its combination of internal mics and preamps seem to produce beautifully detailed and natural results from any source I have pointed it at: nature, street, foley, rehearsal room, electric band practice/shows, classical concerts... I like to think of it as a great quality stereo pair + preamp that fits in a (jacket) pocket, fires up and gives me the very best audio I could hope for in seconds with no cables and no fuss. My typical use scenarios are acoustic home recordings, electric/acoustic band rehearsals, sound design for performance arts productions, orchestral/choral rehearsals and classical/auditorium performances. Battery: there is an aftermarket Li-Ion USB-C battery on Aliexpress which works great :-) DSD format: Sony apparently built in dedicated preamps+converters for DSD. I´ve tested the format on full orchestras and electric band + brass rehearsals in the same settings as my usual PCM/MP3 recordings. Results: amazing, truly distinct from PCM but of limited use in production given the scarcity of dedicated hardware and editing software. These recordings have a very different character, with more balanced/rounded highs, punchier/sweeter mids and more focused lows; overall a more natural "in the moment" presence and immediacy that, alas, I don´t know how to use beyond the headphone-out on the D100.... without dedicated hardware it will convert to PCM upon hitting your PC ADC/DAC. Any tips on making creative/productive use of DSD would be most welcome as I LOVE how it sounds straight from the unit! D50: I recently got one and it has been quite the pleasant surprise: In some ways I prefer the D50´s physical design (less handling noise, less obtrusive screen, more physical sound-shaping controls, matched input gain knob). It´s perfect as a backup or if you don´t fancy spending a small fortune for the D100: not too far off in sound quality from the D100 (less bass, more mids, slightly less treble), apparently the same line-in/external PCM mic preamps and a really beautiful design. Minor differences with D100: flatter-sounding frequency response (might be a plus for some), sony pro-duo memory card only (get a 5€ adapter), no mp3 recording, no DSD recording, and smaller internal memory. For those balking at the price of a D100: go get a D50 while they´re still around, you will not regret it!! M10: I have long been tempted but the sound examples seem to be lacking in detail and stereo separation compared to the D100, and in side-by-side pics it looks almost the same size as a D100 minus the mic capsules, so for pretty much the same price, the D50 is miles ahead in my books.

Handling noise is only really a problem if you choose not to get a shock mount for it. I got one from Rycote when I got a better windjammer. It's still so sensitive it can sometimes pick up strong vibrations through a tripod, but handheld is no problem anymore, and it's also more comfortable carrying it with a padded handle rather than holding it directly in the hand. I think it's a great recorder that is worth a little extra effort to get the most out of it.

From just the sound experience I stick to Roland-R26 … Handling noise and practicability (I/O + Mac M1) there are lots of better alternatives… but the sound it bans on the card if from external or internal mics is astonishingly good compared to even actual competitors… And it came with an eInk touch display one can read in glaring sun!

Great recordings as always! These recordings was made w/o limiter, lowpass and post-processing, right? Really nice low end in recording you made under the bridge. And all of them are soo clean, almost without self-noise). Also have sony, but D-50, not D-100. Like their limiter curcuit, if i'm right, sony records 2 tracks where one is 20db lower than original and when signal clips sony takes second signal and use it instead of clipped one (not sure 100% but i have seen it in their D-50 manual).

Speaking as an Electrical Design Engineer, component parts manufacturers, over time, stop making parts because technologies evolve and they can't justify keeping older processes and machines running. Older designs, over time, become prohibitively expensive. It is a VERT COOL recorder though, enjoy it!

Some components might also have limited manufacturing run because the manufacturing is outsourced to a factory not owned by the designer & brand owner. This is especially true for most of digital ICs (CPUs, GPUs, etc). The most well knoen example is TSMC, that has been often in the news when Apple or some other big customer wasn't able to secure enough capacity. Also even if the brand owner owns the factories they might not be able to source enough "raw materials". The processing chain from stones and sand to a finished electronics product is incredibly long and surprisingly fragile.

Despite tech specs, it is less versatile than the X8, less input channels, no mixing/routing options and the like, so not the device for my needs: I need a Swiss Army knife, even if preamps are noisier and all. I did wonder because the box was so huge. I was also surprised at the size of it. I never saw anyone hand hold it before, so it looks smaller than I thought it was. Sounds great too, but for me it was hard to make out the monorail sound in the test as it passed above, especially the second one. Too much background noise and for me it sounded indistinct and could have been almost anything. Anyway, at the end when you were stroking it, I now know you have a new pet ! I'm still wondering why the best handheld recorders (according to numerous reviewers) went completely out of production and got replaced by inferior models more or less at the same time. One of my theories was, that maybe a component manufacturer of the used DACs went out of business or stopped producing these specific ICs but I could never get any confirmation for that. Does anyone have some background knowledge about the reasons behind this or maybe info what DACs were used in the D100?

Its about 1/3rd the size of the D100 and the onboard amps are just as good essentially. The mics give better stereo separation on the D100 as the mics on the M10 are close proximity omnis, but used with external mics will blow you away as well. And it fits in a shirt pocket!

I've had the PCM M10/B since its launch. I have used the D50 but decided against buying it as the M10 was adequate for the task. Though it wasn't one of the "PRO" models, it far exceeds the spec and performance of most modern recorders. Excellent Mic/Pres and a genuinely simple GUI. Perhaps it's only CON is battery life. I circumvent that with Energizer Lithium batteries. I wish there was a way to power via USB. SONY!! Please give us a 32bit float recorder version of the D1!

To large extent, IMHO of course, Zoom's new F3 takes the spot for small, portable, competitively priced handheld recorder with the best sound quality in absence of D100, except F3 doesnt have built in mics nor has it 3.5mm input. Even if D100 was available, F3 would be around two times less expensive, thats also very valid point. It would be cool if Sony reworked D100 into more modern handheld with 32-bit, USB-C, perhaps XLR inputs and still the same quiet preamps and priced it right.

I'm guessing the PCM-D10 is the new version of the D100. Your menu looks very similar to mine if not exactly the same. I looked at the 50 and 100 but they were so expensive for just built in microphones ( although I still want it/them) but I decided to get the D10 for $500 as I figured the recorder didn't get any worse than the older model and I put faith in Sony just getting things right. Also it does have two XLR inputs. The one main drawback is the D-10 is quite big compared to the D100 but they had to fit those XLR inputs in there somehow. I found one good sound comparison video on KZfaq and even though the D100 sounds louder and warmer I found the D-10 to haver a more natural sound. I don't think you can wrong with any of the PCM Sony recorders. I just couldn't bring myself to get that Tascam and all of it's bugs and the Zooms were rather iffy to me also. Can't go wrong with Sony. I hope to make some sound recording sample videos of the PCM-D10 soon. Personally I love the battery life, fast startup and simplicity of these recorders. I use my D10 more than my Mix-Pre 3 these days. Thanks for this video and I can't wait to see and hear more about this recorder. This is getting way too long of a comment.....out.

I didn't have enough money for the D100 but I was able to land a D50 for a fair price an year ago and my goodness, is it one of cleanest audio I have ever heard. The only downside (due to current needs) is that I hope it had XLR inputs and the memory card used SD instead of Sony Memory Card which is hard to find today and still cost quite a lot.
