I like how every card is borderless. No need to make ten different levels of artificially scarce alternate treatments, just make every card look good.

I like this card game as a celebration of physical media and a platform for artists to explore their creativity. In an era of constant art grifts and aggressive corporate pushing for making the arts obsolete, this is sorely needed.

Hearing about the placement mechanics reminded me of how my brother and I first played MtG. We thought lands created "lanes" and you could only attack down those lanes. Creatures in front of those lands could defend them and, as per our non-verbal agreement, you could only "stack" four lands. Lands also had to be the same type, so you couldn't mix say forests and mountains. Thus every non-basic also had its own "lane". We also had an idea that unblocked monsters could also steal unguarded artifacts instead of damaging the player, but it never came up in play.

That's very similar to sorcery, funny enough. Unguarded artifacts (like the rolling bolder mentioned in the video), is free for anyone to use. That means if the minion you have equip with flaming sword dies in enemy territory, your opponents minions can pick it up and use it against you.

Early Magic had a very wide range of art. Some of it was iconic and remains very evocative pieces of art even today and some of it was very .... utilitarian. But it all added to the great feel of early Magic where every booster pack held the chance for wondorous discovery. Good to see that at least some people still remember that feeling and are striving to keep it alive. Will definitely check out Sorcery! Thanks for sharing it with us.

@yellowpie

@@zenithquasar9623 I think mtg has been getting a lot better at putting out diverse, inspired art in recent years. There's still "the contemporary mtg art style," but they're not afraid to bring on artists who do something completely different. Jeremy Wilson, Eli Minaya, John Tedrick, and say what you will about Booster Fun and Secret Lairs, but they undeniably make sure Magic has no shortage of unique art. (And even within "the contemporary mtg art style," there's a fair share of masterpieces like Storm the Seedcore.)

Just look at cards like Stasis and Land Tax: you don't need art that is technically breathtaking to be effective in card games. What is missing is the feeling of novelty that gave different cards their unique "feel."

It kind of sounds like you could use this as a worldbuilding tool, especially for D&D. Play a game of this and take a photo of the layout of the sites at the end of the game and you kind of have a hexmap. Heck what happened in the game could even the background lore of that setting

I dig it. Haven't played MTG (as in bought new cards) since.... 2005ish? But this sounds pretty cool. There was a card shop that sold commons and uncommons for 5 cents if you bought 20 or more. My wife (then girlfriend) used to have cheap nerd dates in which she and I would make decks for each other based on what we thought the other would like. I still use the blue wizard/bird deck she made me lol

At this point it might be the only way to honestly know if it's not ai. Given that artists will soon have to compete against an ai stealing their works to compete with themselves basically... getting more effective over a smaller and smaller data set. Well I would consider some notion of this to get more popular.

I like the correlation you make to DnD as I got into MtG when the owner of a now out-of-business comics and games store sold me on it as "DnD but with cards'. From that point on, I always play acted the role of the Planeswalker and would even give my creatures names and do sound effects and funny voices. Even my tournament opponents would eventually get in on the fun. I haven't played a tournament in nearly a decade. Everyone is just so serious.

I love sorcery for what it is as a fan of fantasy and board games, but the compatitive TCG player who plays Flesh and Blood in me is infuriated with how vague the cards can be at times. I was playing a game with my brother and we looked at a card and none of us knew what it was supposed to do, so we pulled out our phones and went to find out and we still didn't figure it out so we had to join the Sorcery discord and ask in the rulings channel to see how to use the card correctly. I remember feeling that a card felt way too strong because of my interpretation of the vague text and after the game I once again asked on the discord and found out that both me and my opponent completely misunderstood how the card works making it grossly OP because of how vague the text is. Love the game tho as a kitchen table board game to get people into TCGs.

While I can't speak to the game itself, I find the stance of no digital art strange to say the least. Honestly, this game sounds like it's not for people who play TCGs. The vagueness of the rules text is always gonna cause issues. I can't even count the number of times I and friends have been baffled trying to figure out text on a card in a board game, and that's always gonna be worse with a TCG card that you've never seen before. The varying limit on copies of a card per deck is going to make deckbuilding frustrating for anyone who has a strong sense of what they want their deck to do, because it reduces the consistency a lot. On top of that, I can't spot where the rarity indicator is on the card... If that's hard to spot at a glance, it'll make it way slower to make sure your deck follows the restrictions.
@QuestingBeast
@QuestingBeast 4 ай бұрын
The rarity is actually in the typeline in the middle of a card. For example, an "elite" card has elite rarity (rare). You can make quite consistent decks if you want, you just have to mostly use commons and uncommons.

The game seems very interesting and has a very unique mechanic with the way you form and play across a battlefield. Some of the appeal points seem directly boomer-ish, a very "well back in MY day these games were BETTER" mindset, but if it inspires something creative and fun, I guess it's an alright outcome. I just wonder how sustainable it is to give every card hand-crafted art. Certainly worth keeping an eye on, but we'll see if it overcomes the Two-Year Curse and doesn't just die out, given that it's a niche within a niche.

@ConfessionGang sorry, but mtg has so MANY formats that I would rather play with.

i like the idea but the layout makes them look like cheap board game cards.

Hi. A professional artist here. You can't tell the difference between digital and traditional painting once it's been mass-printed. Especially on something as small as a not-magic card. What a pointlessly limiting restriction. I love traditional paint as much as the next person, but wow. Dumb. Beautiful cards though! :D

Yeah, this game looks pretty lame to play not gonna lie.

Nice, but the cost is way too high for something with so few cards to draw from. I'm also unimpressed with the art direction. Sure none of it is digital, but digital or not, the majority of it just looks uninspired.

This game is already super expensive without proving itself it's going to last.

That certainly _looks_ like how I remember Magic: The Gathering felt, circa 1994. Thank you for sharing this.
