In this part one of Soss Hinges, I'll show you the correct router bits to use, why you should use a plunge router and how to get a perfect fit! I've used Soss hinges for years and with a few pointers, you can use em in your work as well. Their concealed look is appealing to me, they're available in brass, zinc & black...it's easy to find a finish that works with any project. I don't have any affiliation...I just like Soss hinges!
My eBook with video that shows exactly the tip/trick along with a short description of each one. Get your copy here (it's a small price for you, but it allows me to keep creating these tips/tricks & videos) ramonvaldezfinefurniture.com/...

That was fun to watch, Ramon. For the all the years that I've been woodworking, I've never used Soss hinges. You make it look quite easy so I need to figure out a hinged project where I can give them a try. Thanks!!

They are a unique hinge, for sure. Shaper Hub has a couple of hinge “templates”. How cool would it be to adjust the fit by a thou or two? Thanks David. I have a super simple Soss jig to show this Sunday.

Great jig Ramon, I love these hinges and it usually takes me ages to set up the router and fences to machine for them, really love the second set of fences that you add for the deeper mortice. Cheers man

I love Soss hinges! I used three of them on one door recently and was surprised how easy it was to make them align. The YT video will be out soon…titled Magnetic Latch or something similar. I’m still editing. Much thanks!

The painters tape trick was brilliant. I wonder if a domino could make the mortise for that? Thanks for the jig idea. I’ve seen these at all the shaper booths. But a shaper is way down the road. I’ve been intimidated by these hinges but now I’ll willing to give them a shot.

The painters tape trick I love! Four pieces is 1/64” or about .015”. (Or one piece measuring 3 3/4 thou!) A very small but measurable amount and easily incorporated whenever one needs to make small adjustments…on a router, at the table saw, chopsaw, The Domino is metric and the Soss hinges (here in the States at least) are imperial…so nope. And the Shaper would be a great choice doe Soss…I believe they already have free files for a couple sizes over at Shaper Hub. Thanks a ton for checking out the vid!

They’re cool hinges. I have not used the Shaper for these…but it would do it well. As a matter of fact I’ve seen free files available through Shaper Hub.

Interestingly Soss does say the 100 can be used on 1/2 thick door material but I will say it obviously fits very, very tight which I am a bit surprised they endorse given how little material is left outside the mortise itself etc. The doors I used it for are very small.

Maybe create some visual aids? Make two mortised pockets and then cut them in half. Put the soss hinges in them.

4:18 "This probably drives the Europeans crazy" - Why yes. Yes it does. I know it's what you are used to, but man it seems so complicated compared to metric.
@ramonartful

I suppose it’s a matter of what you learn. I actually use both. We had machines at my old employment that were metric. I like em both.

Ramon - great simplified discussion on calculating the placement of the hinge based on the setback + half the width of the hinge - you're the only one on YT that explains that most critical element! Just to be sure though, is that combined dimension from the outside edge or visible side of the piece (as you state at 4:03-4:04 on that scrap piece that has FENCE penciled on it) - or is that side labeled FENCE the back (assuming interior) edge of the piece as you mentioned at 4:45/46??? I have six cabinet door blanks that the wife had made and wants me to do these on them using the original cab door soss hinges as a go-by. Never have done them and would like to get these down as it is quite the cool hinge - but as with anything these days, there is a specific multi-step process to do so and best to experiment on some scrap first until one can produce consistent results.

Hey Steve. I may have misspoke in the video but "normally" I reference everything off of the outside or faces of the given project. The fence of my jig is a reference that I can use either front or back, depending on how the setback turns out. In other words...sometimes I don't want the hinge centered...and if I make a test cut, I'll sometimes use the other side of the piece as the "front". What counts is that I make sure to keep track of the orientation of the jig, the work piece and even the orientation of the router (I'll explain in a bit) as I make test cuts. Sometimes it's simple after doing the easy math. But test cuts are key. Now, some routers will have the spindle off center by a few thousandths to the center of the hole in the base. Thats adjustable on some routers, or ways to do it on routers that aren't. I show this in a router video. So, keeping track of router orientation can make a difference. Hope that all makes sense. Thanks for watching!

@@ramonartful Hi Ramon - thanks so much for your expertise and instruction. These are definitely tricky little buggers as you mention and I will definitely be practicing many test cuts on the old cabinet doors as you suggest! Thanks again! Steve
