The South African Zulu leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has died at the age of 95. His death was announced by president Cyril Ramaphosa, who described him as an outstanding leader and said he was saddened by his passing. Buthelezi was the founder of the Inkhata freedom party, a Zulu political and cultural movement with nearly two million members. Alongside former president Nelson Mandela, he was a key figure in South Africa's transformation from a white apartheid state into a multi-racial democracy in the 1990s. But his legacy is also controversial.

His IFP party is very inclusive, many Indian, Whites. He was a very proudly traditional Zulu with a strong push for development of banks, property and education. Complicated man and condolences to his family. RIP

@user-gu1ti9me6i Oh yes. If he had the option and the majority of people in Natal wanted independence from South Africa he would taken it. Even the current new Zulu king feels the same. But IFP didn't need to inclusive by "law". It was a party chose to have didn't racial groups in Parliament, a big focus on educated people. Not just a group of rubbish yes men, like the ANC.

And the ANC got their way and now look at South Africa. The primary division now is between the ANC kings and the peasants of South Africa. Not to mention all the violence perpetuated by the ANC in the past, I don't think they had a leg to stand on when accusing this man of anything.

Now South Africa is not under apartheid, but why is it currently considered as a failed state.
@crastinaterpro
@crastinaterpro 10 ай бұрын
what a strange question ... put in just that way. There are many reasons ... but, corruption and lack of integrity in ANC structures are probably the biggest reasons. Trying to create meaningful change without dismantling apartheid structures was always gonna be a losing battle, as well. But ... perhaps when the land and the means of production are finally relinquished to their rightful owners ... things will start to take a turn for a brighter future. Do not dispair.

With the benefit of hindsight, DW lauds the anti-apartheid struggle of the 20th Century while traducing the anti-apartheid struggle occurring right now in the 21st Century. In fact, DW's 2022 code of conduct demands that its journalists show allegiance to an apartheid state.

yeah he really doesn't sound like a good guy. if your reviews after you die are this mixed, you sucked in life. kobe bryant was a r**ist, but people still acted like he was literally a saint when he died. this guy here sounds like a tribalist/ethnonationalist who worked only to gain power for himself and his zulu people, and only switched to trying to gain that within a democratic south africa when the apartheid government was already on its way out. I guess it fits well in the context of zulu history, it's not like the zulu are known for treating other africans with respect. him lobbying against sanctions while condemning state violence sounds like all those western leftists condemning putin while calling for weapon shipments to ukraine to end. it doesn't matter what ideas you pay lip service to when your actions have the opposite effect.
