I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

I check in on Amundsen-Scott every day. The coldest temp I've ever seen is -105 F from July 1st last year. We are brothers from other mothers. If I was my young self, I would find a way to get down there. "The Thing" is one of my favorite South Pole traditions. Did not know about The Shining. Wow! So cool.

Just discovered your channel recently, and its like crack! Watching these update videos while working on spreadsheets while working from home is a good way to get through the work day. I am actually surprised your videos don't have more views than they have - you have a great personality and your videos are fascinating

If the North and South Pole are tilted on 23.5-degree angles, then the Arctic and Antarctic circles go straight up and down, and the “rod” you sometimes see supporting the earth in seasons diagrams go almost straight through them; 90 minus 23.5 is 66.5; the Arctic and Antarctic circles are at 66.55 degrees latitude.

Viktor, I’ve just discovered this channel and I have to say I absolutely love it!!! What an incredible insight into the crazy world of overwintering at Antarctica. I’ve been gushing about your channel to my friends; exhorting them to watch. Are you ever going back? When can we expect more content? Thanks again

Thank you so much!! And sadly there won’t be too much in the July video because it was crappy weather for most of the month 😞 Didn’t really get to go shoot much.

great video as usual. love the timelapse of the sky. that roomba race was too funny. not just because you raced roombas, but lol, the excitement and cheers that came when the first roomba crossed the finish line. do you guys have other entertaining racing ideas? And yeah, wow, you talking about that almost - 100 degree temp there, while ours had hit 100 degrees and above recently here, yikes, hearing that crazy wind out there, i definitely can believe there was an actual 200 degree difference between our locations. i love that movie, The Thing. so while those winds and whiteouts are going crazy in all that darkness, and you hear thumping coming from outside your room door, be careful. it could be The Thing!!!! or it could just be a roomba. :-) :-) . until next time, stay safe and warm my friend.

Thank you so much!! It was a really good month 😊 But right?! The race was seriously one of the funniest things I’ve ever experienced down here. Absolutely hilarious. But I don’t think we have any other racing ideas. And yeah, we probably were about 200 apart! Pretty insane. And the movie tradition is really fun, hopefully it’ll be the roomba on my door though 🤣

How much power does the station consume during winter in Kw and how much fuel is used to heat the facility per day? Can you do a video explaining internet access, availability times and speed?
@GoneVenturing
@GoneVenturing 5 жыл бұрын
Oh man. I'm not sure about the power, but I do know we use between 6500-7500 gallons of fuel per week for everything, whether that be vehicles, heating the station, keeping the science going, etc. And I could do that! There are some explanations that I've done already in previous videos too! ☺️

@Beavereaver
@Beavereaver 3 жыл бұрын
Wow 7500 gallons is actually not a lot for that scale. That’s around 18,000 to 20,000 dollars in fuel costs.

Yeah, the arch doors in front of the LO facility that is a very common scene in the winter. Wear a T-shirt saying “”I Don’t Care”” next time...

The shining is a excellent movie for a bunch of people stuck out in a field of snow. Don't listen to the Barkeep. Especially, if you have no barkeeper 😂

According to Jay Wiener, its Stanley Kubric's admission to his roll in filming the 'Moon Landing'. Well thought out, fits well. Still have yet to find the third installment.

Oh no, that’s not good either. June is also dangerously the coldest month in the South Pole, because at that time is also winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
