Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at a Kia Rondo V-6 that was dropped off with customer complain of an "extended crank time" or a "hard to start" after it has sat about 5 minutes. We quickly narrow down the issue as a fuel delivery problem, but what is the cause? Stick around to find out! -Enjoy!

News these days is depressing. 9 killed here, 6 stabbed there, 36 million without power. 3 Hurricanes and 6 tropical storms coming for Florida and Texas. An earthquake on 9.3 scale just hit Mexico, right after a solar flare exploded on 9/9 . In other news, Iphone now costs $999 and galaxy costs 666. Damn you CNN to hell. I agree with your comment. I go straight to KZfaq before and after work to relax. I done disconnected that mainstream crap.

I just wanted to thank you for posting videos. I have struggled with depression for several years and being part of the SMA audience makes me feel part of something really positive and you are never on your own, like going round to your friends garage to fix cars and have some banter. I am sure there are many other people out in KZfaq land who are helped by being part of SMA.

I became friends wth some mechanics while delivering auto parts, it was my go to place whenever I had a problem or just needed a shoulder, you meet some interesting people also who come and go, like the snap on guy, guys coming by with items that fell off the back of a truck, porn tape sales guys selling pirated tapes, one unfortunately died a few years ago but I still keep in touch with one of the guys after the garage closed in 2006, I even went to their houses, if I needed to borrow tools, they even delivered an engine hoist and engine stand to my house when I needed it.

LR Disco I know exactly what you mean, sometimes I play SMA videos just to have something to listen to for distraction so I can “get out of my own head” for a while (it’s a dangerous place to be for me!) plus car repair is interesting to me, I’m not a mechanic but I’ve always done most of my own auto and boat maintenance and repairs so I’m learning useful stuff at the same time.

beechwood619 no the dorkman kit would be zip ties and glue, that was made in China! You install the zip ties and glue and let it sit 48 hours before installing it into the tank! At least Eric O's fix was a stainless steel hose clamp, probably made in the USA! AGAIN NICE FIX ERIC O

Rock Auto sells pumps for these for under $10. the pressure hose has a crimp clamp holding it on. The website also says the original pump was made by Magneti Marelli. Kinda strange S. Korea went to Italy to buy fuel pumps when China is right next door.

Thanks! I just tore into my 08 Kia Rondo. That fitting was cracked, just like the one you worked on. I decided to risk it with the worm screw clamp like you did. It starts up just fine now. The hardest part was screwing off that 5 1/2" ring.

I think your fix with the hose clamp is better than the factory plastic clips. If it was my vehicle I'd say she was fixed baby! I liked how you scratched a line to tell when the ring was moving and used it again to re-tighten to factory specs. Nice trick

Knowing used car dealers, that IS the fix. Doubt they'll spring for a new fuel pump if it's running. Frankly, the way Eric has it fixed now is better than the OEM. Those clips look really thin and weak.
@andrewthompsonuk1

CO Jones Would not quite say better than OEM. The rest of the plastic will be brittle so something will give one day if the car survives long enough. Might be a better fix than some aftermarket module.

My dad used to keep a box of chalk in his toolbox. He would use chalk for alignment marks and to Mark the timing marks so they would show up nice and bright with the timing light. I still have a Craftsman timing light from 1966 that was my dad's. It has two leads to go to the battery and one to go to plug one. I think I have another one that uses a inductive sensor that goes over the plug wire. I always like the first one better

I just had a hard start condition on my 2009 Tahoe. I had good fuel pressure key on engine off, and good pressure while running, but after I shut it off the pressure would slowly drop off, about 7 psi per minute. I popped the injectors out of the intake and after quite a bit of searching I found that #8 injector had a wet spot on it. I replaced the injector and the pressure is perfectly normal now, hard start condition cleared. Thanks to watching your videos, I have put away my parts cannon and replaced it with actual diagnostic skills. Thank you Mr. O.

I found my issue only after hooking up a fuel pressure gauge and seeing what my pressures were doing. I am not familiar with an "electrical thermostat" on this engine. My suggestion is if you suspect that might have an injector problem, get a reading on your fuel pressure and go from there.

Thanks Eric, good segment I have been so pleased with my 08 Kia Rondo 2.7L V6 that I bought another used and just bought a parts one to fix the other two. The one I bought used is starting to have an extended crank so will check out the filter first as they can be finicky. Good call on the connector, I now see the after market ones have a direct hose rather then a connector to bypass that problem. Mechanic once told me to also keep tank at least half full so fuel pump is always covered and cool. Also use premium so ethanol doesn't do dirty deeds to the rubber and such. Love your channel, always enjoyable and educational. ⛽

Was glad to see this video, I purchased Kia Rondo 2011 just 2 months ago, as my winter car. I did research on the vehicle, good reviews, & every time I saw one & the owner was there, asked for their opinion on it. Didn't get anything negative. It is like a micro minivan with lots of room. Had my mechanic look it over & he gave me a thumbs up. The price was very good, only had 80, 000 kms (48,000 mi.) The air compressor needs to be replaced but that wasn't a high priority for me, since it will be mainly a cooler weather vehicle for me, worry about it next year.

Thank you Eric O. I had a K car and when it warmed up would be perfect but on short hops e.g. 5 minutes it would only crank no start. Determined that the fuel would / could not shut off just keep dumping fuel and would flood out the engine. Corrected by disconnecting the electrical connection at the TB and crank till started of course now no fuel. Reconnect and restart and off you go till next time. B4 OBD2 but you could read the 22 and 55 codes. Don't miss those days in the middle of winter. Note, it was only a winter beater.

That's why SMA and Eric O more specifically gets so many satisfied repeat customers. Whether the problem is electrical or just a plain broken tab on a perfectly good fuel pump, the end result is that the issue is caught and repaired. Eric O made the right call fixing the problem with the hose clamp. Im the first on this channel to want OEM supplied parts BUT to have the customer pay for a whole new fuel pump module because of 2 broken tabs is insane. The pump wasn't even broken but rather a poor cheap design by the Kia engineers. The clamp was secure and fixed the problem nicely. As expected he will notify the owner of what he found and give him any further options available if he chooses to replace the component. Even Eric O needs to fall in line on family movie night. Great job!

Fixed better than new ! One thing I've noticed is how long starters last on fuel injected cars. Easy starting when things are working properly has taken most of the wear and tear off the starters. You could put a note in there with your business card explaining what you did and why. Date it and offer 10 bucks off on a factory repair if it ever fails and you'll also get your hose clamp back.

I believe the Kia Rondo had a TSB for fuel pump problems on the 08-10 but have seen a lot of people saying it started in the 07 models for this same issue you have here, poor connection design and have a repair kit for them. probably a fancy aircraft quality stainless steel worm drive hose clamp. Which Dr. O has figured out on his own. :)

Gotta be the cheapest fuel pump fix around.. I say send out and drive the beast! Usually when people here the word fuel pump they say oh crap gonna cost how many hundred's of dollars to fix. Good job Eric.

I have a 2004 Volvo XC70 that had a crack on the top of the fuel pump in the plastic part that the gas goes through just before it exits the pump I filled the whole cavity with epoxy worked like a champ I think your fix is just fine. I’m sure the car salesman is just going to ship it.

I have a 07 Rondo with the 4 banger with 186,000 miles and you can hear the fuel prime before starting. You need a spanner like the one for a Milwaukee angle grinder to get the fuel pump ring off. They are good running cars. I put 80 miles a day on mine.

1)that has to be one of the easiest fuel pumps to get to. 2)anti-spark punch, LOL 3)those dang o-rings love to expand. one on a mercury cougar was hopeless, I'm not ashamed to say I cut it down to fit and dabbed a little RTV to seal it, worked like a charm.

As long as the tabs match the slots, the clamp should still hold the fitting in. My 2001 Elantra would have almost the same symptoms (Slower more consistent leak down), long crank in the morning and drive fine all day then would crank normal after work. The check valve was getting gummed up so I added Chevron Techron injector cleaner and it cleared up in a couple of days! I started doing it 5 or 6 years ago about once a year and no problems since.

Nice little fix and I seriously doubt the used car guy does anything more. It will hold and I guess you could rough up the plastic a bit with emery cloth to ensure it grabs. What you did is probably better than factory.
