2009 Jeep Compass / Patriot Corroded Relay Box Repair / CEL P0480, P0481, U0100, P0691, P0693, C2202
This a video I tried to do a "live" diagnosis on just to show a little bit of the process of the repair this vehicle and diagnose it. I did jump the gun a little thinking I would have to cut the whole mess out of there but a new day with fresh eyes reviled only a few bad pins and was easily savable by using used parts. Why didn't I get a repair end from Chrysler? Its because they don’t make it unfortunately. I think all in all the repair went well and the customer was happy. Please let me know what you think and leave your comments or tips in the comment box and please subscribe to our channel.

Big thanks to you, Doc. I had a 2008 patriot today with multiple codes. One of the codes was the p0481. I did a Google search and there you were. My customer's car had 1 green relay terminal and 3 wires in the area that were chafed through. The chafing allowed moisture into the wire and corroded the control circuit for the cooling fan relay. I repaired the bad wire sections and replaced the relay. Works fine now. I really appreciate your video. It saved me a big headache. The harness was available for 500 bucks. The labor to replace it would have been huge. Thanks and God bless you.

Eric When I saw all of those trouble codes I felt a little anxiety. Amazing how you do not jump to all sorts of illogical conclusions and use your head and experience to solve a problem. It was really genius how you zeroed in on that problem so quickly. And really worked hard to find a viable and economical solution for the customer (not willing to just settle for the obvious solution of replacing harness and costing the customer a huge amount of money.) Your type of thinking and working teaches a lot about how to properly problem solve. Your technique applies to all sorts of problems.

That's a really bad spot for that box. Great vid. I'm glad I subscribed. On one of the big RAM truck websites, there is a thread where fuses and relays were not seated all the way at the factory causing intermittent failures and codes. People are going out and pressing down the fuses and relays. Some are finding the seating failures and it's correcting the intermittent issues. This is on brand new 2015's. i'm going to check my 2014 tomorrow. Thanks again.

Thanks Eric. I got a good deal on an 08 Compass with a tow package. It's a little workhorse. Please thank the lady whose 09 Compass you periodically work on. Don't overcharge her because after watching your video 1,000,000 times, I've saved a LOT of money and hopefully you're earning a few bucks posting fixit videos on KZfaq. I'm still working on a speed sensor triple dash light after the mechanic changed out a hub. It looks like the sensor was put on correctly but now my abs light is on, with two others lights. I'm also working on a check engine light that traces back to the rear oxygen sensor. The sensor is new. I traced the wiring back to the relay box, like the one you changed in this video, and found one terminal which is corroded. I found the part on Amazon for $14, locally it's $24 but the terminals don't exactly match up. I'd have to change the female receptacle from narrow to wide, the same problem my old lady now has. Thanks again. Slappin the Sides.

Eric: that relay block is a connector. It seems hardwired only because unlike most connectors it also holds the relays. Likely the secret is how the spade lug pins are designed to latch into the block.

The green crusties in action! In times past at work, like you, I learned when you have multiple codes, especially if they're from one fuse or "fuses" close to each other, start with Power and/or Grounds! I saved one co-worker HOURS of diagnostic work, it was one fuse, then he located which part of the circuit was......wait for it....."INTERMITTENTLY" shorting out. Keep up the good work and vidoes!

Great job Eric and really nice of you to go out to the junk yard to get a connector/harness for the lady. I'm sure that a lot of shops would just quote a bill with a part from the Dodge dealer. Then the customer would say that's too much and off they go possibly junking their car. Your dialogue is just the right amount and the video is not too long. Doing a great job with the videos and with the editing. Keep the good work up...

Funny, you should say that about the junkyard. I enjoy walking around them myself, but the biggest fan is my wife. She says it's like a yard sale to her. awesome video eric I think your videos should be just as long as they are now I think you learn more from you explaining the concept of whats going on and what your ideas on how to attack it and then showing the viewers the repair from start to finish to verify the diagnosis was correct. especially for newbies that are trying to learn I think its just awesome the way you do your videos .we both know from doing this field for over 30 yrs there is not 1 wrong way to diagnose you can line up 4 mechanics in a row and not 1 of them will diagnose the car the same several directions you can start with for me to see you diagnose it differently the I or someone else would is just awesome for me and a lerning curve I know its a lot harder and makes a longer day for you but I love your long videos

@South Main Auto Repair LLC. Ya know, I believe that I fixed one of the problems on my 2010 Patriot. The ground Strap from the engine to the strut tower was corroded & shot, falling apart. The Jeep was originally from NY & now in Michigan.... I replaced it & next I'm gonna check the small harnesses that go into the fuse block & see if the 4wd! is corroded. I've heard that is usually why that light comes on & won't allow the 4wd to work. Other than that, there are actually no codes except the o2 sensors & I already know that with 185k, the cats are probably clogging up. If you do catch my comment, would you agree with what I'm thinking could be the 4WD! light popping on. Thanks & great video....

Yeah, here by where I live, there's an auto salvage company located where some of the old GM Plants used to be located at. What buildings were wrecked, they left the concrete floors which now act as the lot where they park all the salvage vehicles in nice neat rows. No mud, standing water, just like a parking lot. At any rate, They've got a lot of Liberty's. Patriot's & Compass's. You can even pay them a fee & they'll pop off the parts you need, so winter doesn't have to be your downfall. You order what you need, they tell you when you walk in that your parts are ready. Since we have a 2007 Liberty that I already looked at & yep, the fuse block & that relay block was starting to look trashed. As for my 2010 Patriot, I'll probably look at my fuse block as well & just get when I think we need, leave all the fuses & relays in & for that additional $15, walk out with loaded fuse blocks, which if they're all in good shape, we'll probably end up with $120 in parts, uses & relays for $35. Then once the weather starts to get warmer, I'll get my son to work with me & we'll just put a weekend aside & replace all those corroded blocks with newer/cleaner parts. I already replaced parts on her Liberty & man oh man it was nice to not mess with a bunch corroded parts. I just have to say thank you for posting this video because we actually have 2 Jeep's that'll need some clean newer looking parts to install, so all those codes disappear....

Great job. I wish the wrench who did ours was as competent as u. ! My wife has the same prob on her 2012. Spent 700$ in 3 visits in the last 6 months. Two visits with chrysler and one indie shop last week. He just bypassed the block to get her on the road. Fan is on full time now, But she is on a 5000mi road trip so at least it isn't overheating anymore.

South Main Auto Repair No problem! I think I had more trouble tracking down the correct relays than with the actual repair :-/ Pulling the inner fender makes that area easily accessible as well, so that might be a consideration for some. We were doing ball joints and a tie rod end at the same time so that made sense for us since the tire was off already.

Eric, I think almost every one of these Jeeps has that relay issue. Just checked mine and the relay pin was rotted off too, cooling fan relay i think. Good show!

I personally like when it's a bad problem and you make t look easy by using your tried and true methods Professor. Garden variety is ok, especially when there is salt involved, but when you combine salt with e electronics that's cool! Just glad I don't deal with salt haha! Keep up the good work and nice camera.
