In this video I have a look at a customers 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage with 1200cc's of thunder! He has been battling this EVAP code for a long time now but none of the crappy aftermarket parts have stuck so he's throwing in the towel.
-Enjoy!

*FOLLOW UP-* The fella did call me about a week later after running a drive cycle and said now that EVAP system works it did flag a code for a small leak. Not sure if he fixed it himself at that point or what but he did not come back to me to see the job through. He did mention when he was working on it initially that he had a few mishaps underneath with some hoses or something like that. Any how just thought you guys should know. -Eric O.

I kept pushing the floor so hard it did push me back and sure enough I slowly got up to speed, just in enough time to have to break. Certainly a city car but I live in the country and went back to my Grand Cherokee, parking the Mirage for a couple months till I sold it to my niece as a first car. The CVT really hurts it.

To all you DIY , I run a garden tractor, snow blower on site repair business. I know not everyone can diagnose. So I won’t yell at the parts cannon . BUT for crying out loud---1part at a time. Then clear coat and see if that worked . if not at least if you find a new problem now and reverse before you get totally confused I love Eric in his involved explanations. as a non car mechanic I need some coaching on these computer systems
@xrisdavid785
@xrisdavid785 2 ай бұрын
" I need some coaching on these computer systems" ...... Well, for sure ya need diagrams.....either parts or wiring.....because cars are just rolling computers where various sensors tell the "brains" [ECM] to switch active parts ON or OFF. It's all this fancy stuff we're payin' for when ya buy a new car. Take for instance the windshield wipers. Ol' skool was having a 3 position switch [off-slow-fast] connected directly to the wiper motor. New sh1t has a clickable rheostat that feeds the ECM which sends 12v to the wiper motor in various duty cycles....so ya might have 5 different speeds to set & the ECM sends the 12v to the motor in increments of time [duty cycle]....basically a square wave that changes "length" as view on a scan tool oscilloscope....which a good one can run ya $400 up to $2000. Hey !!! .all these "improvements" are somebody's cash cow....don't ya know

I've had 6 and every one has been reliable and never broken down. Though a friend did crack the block in a Late 80's Magna which they were notorious for doing. I had a 1991 and it was fixed by that time. My '15 Mirage is still going strong, being driven by my niece. Only things I've had to replace over the years has been a gearbox & shocks in my 1983 Sigma, breaks & tires, exhaust, a cat in the '99 Verada, few batteries, belts, coolant hoses. Did have to fix rust in the Sigma, but all others had no rust. All were garaged except for the Sigma, a 1994 Magna, 1998 Express van.

These cars are pretty popular in my area and to their credit, even with a CVT, power train failures are pretty low, sometimes you get one with high mileage and the engine is a little noisy, but I've seen it a couple times that it's just piston slap when the motor is cold in the morning, maybe Mitsubishi missed the mark a little with their NVH, my only dislike for those cars is how fragile they look, they look like you can run over a paperclip and you'll snap the control arm in half or something.

It also goes that you should stay away from appliance parts that are not oem, I’ve figured out that a lot of the elements and safety items ie, thermostats and thermal fuses and other sensors are faulty and don’t last very long or can even cause a fire 🔥 because they are too heavy made to be able to blow! Or too cheaply built.

Your friend at Pine Hollow had the same complaint recently with the new coils someone put into a Subaru he was diagnosing that wouldn't run when the alternator was connected. Found out the coils were just junk aftermarket and wouldn't work right when the voltage was above 12 volts which is always the case when the alternator is charging the battery. Of course, once OEM coils were put in, all was right again.

Your observation about the cheap online parts is a very good 'heads up' to the quality of manufacture. I've been selling auto parts at various 'mom and pop' stores for approx. 45 years and presently work part time in a 'brick and mortar' parts store and we hear it all the time. Someone calls or comes in to get prices and says they can get them a lot cheaper on amazon or ebay. We tell them good luck... and have had quite a few come in a while later needing a replacement because their 'cheaper' part was junk right out of the box.

I've been bit by Chinese parts. Had a dual tank Ford pickup with in tank fuel pumps. One quit so I pulled the tank and swapped the fuel pump and hanger assembly. Return check valve was non existent or stuck open though so that tank would overfill when using the other tank. New pump hanger under warranty, pulled the bed that time as it's easier than pulling a full tank. Same thing. Luckily I left the bed off. Returned second Chinese hanger and bought a $400 OEM one. No issues. My guess is the Chinese one was reverse engineered from a Bronco one (single tank) so it didn't have a check valve.

I have a concern. Concrete is really hard on the knees. So, when you’re trying to check a purge valve on a Mitsubishi, carry a soft pillow with you and let your knees have a break. You only get two of them and they do wear out. And my wife came into my lab LHAO and told me to watch this video. Apparently, luckily for me, she has a dirty mind. Love that the greeting is back. That is so ™️ South Main Auto. Great video, Mr. O! Thanks for taking us along!!

I learned my lesson on Chinesium parts building a motorcycle for my niece. The bike I bought needed rear directionals, from the image the Chinesium ones looked just like factory originals but were about 1/3 the price so I bought some. I installed them and the seemed to work just fine, but then my niece tells me she failed stated inspection when one of them didn't work. I pulled off the failed part and opened it up and was flabbergasted by how cheaply the part was constructed, one of the wires was wrapped around the spring that kept tension on the light bulb, it wasn't even soldered, just wrapped. Fortunately I had some factory originals on hand for another project and replaced the Chinesium parts and she was good to go. I'll buy aftermarket parts for my vehicles, but only from a reputable source, no more cheapy Chinesium for me.

I would much rather use OEM boneyard parts rather than Amazon "new" parts.

I’ve been telling customers that for a while now, I work for a major auto parts store (not Napa, sorry about that) that you get what you pay for. Try to get a refund from those online companies for those “cheap parts”. You come see me with a part and I will refund you without question. Love your videos

Thank you for the diagnosis and followup. You solved the main problem, once the system started working here comes the next problem. Sometimes it's cheaper to change the hoses that were removed and reinstalled especially if they're old and questionable.

I've bought from 1A auto before, and it sounds real that it's crap. I've swapped out parts from them with brick and motor several times. I've learned my lesson. Even Doorman, they may supply oem parts to auto manufacturers, but they also carry crap they will sell to you in a heartbeat!

Hey Eric! Just a suggestion, you should put banana jack leads on your load testing test lites, then you can use your AES wave terminal leads...no more "gingerly front probing". I've been doing it for years and I'd highly recommend it. Cheers!

Nice straightforward diagnosis of the EVAP system. They really aren't that complicated on non-turbo vehicles, but that one uses ORVR so it's a little spicier. Something I rarely work on since my county doesn't have emissions testing. But when I do it's usually the purge valve stuck open, making the engine rich and hard to start after a quick stop.
