Come along with Eric O. at the SMA repair shop as he swaps out the 3.8 liter engine in this high mileage 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a P0303 Misfire and has started to burn coolant. I am going to break this up in a multi part series to help keep the videos shorter.
Interested in stuff seen in the videos or the tools and toys Eric O. likes and uses? Check out the S.M.A. "A-Store" and help support the channel! : astore.amazon.c...
If an SMA Video has helped you out please consider giving using the "support" link on our KZfaq home page. The videos take real time to create and pull us away from real work that pays our bills.
THANKS!
--Eric O.

Hannah is without a doubt the best mechanics helper, I have ever seen. She gives her undivided attention to the task at hand, and not on some cell phone or fixing her hair. What an asset to any business. Oh by the way, one of us is going to have to change the ring tone on the phone. Every time your phone rings, I jump up and check to see if it's my phone ringing. ;-) . My wife even asked the other day, Ken is that your phone ringing ? Yeah I know, it's my phone...Oh well. This job is not for old men , like the movie said.....take care..Ken

When I was little I would read the instructions for penetrating oil, and it always said "Set up vibration". I thought that was SO stupid and I never bothered to do it. Years later...I realized how important vibration is...and it really does work.

I've done numerous of these engines, either 3.3 or 3.8. I found the easier way (especially with the newer 3.6) is to remove the front bumper, the top radiator brace and the radiator, condenser and fan as a unit. That way the engine can come out the front. Also no need to remove the water pump, just the pulley and crank.

For we home gamers, it is great to see that you struggle with the same things that we do, but you have a 12-step program to get a solution. I learned kneeling over my father's shoulder, holding the light and ducking wrenches when things didn't work out. I can afford to pay someone like you to do it right (and faster) but I like to get my hands dirty and fingers bloody, so anything purely mechanical on my '08 Dakota, I try to do it myself. My family knows to have the band aids ready whenever I pull the compressor and air tools out!

Was curious why you did not pull the radiator. I can't tell from the video but I have seen a lot of radiators are now held in with a few bolts and then sit on rubber grommets. I may seem like on an inch or two but it could be all you need, and less worrying about contact with the radiator. I love your videos and have come to appreciate what it means when people say 'California car' when it comes to rust. I am still amazed you get anything done without major structural pieces just crumbling from the rust.

This is one reason FWD cars with transverse engines are a PITA to remove them. Especially with the later models, where everything is shoe horned into place. On some cars, you can not even get to the spark plugs or starter motor easily. They are designed to be bought, run until about 150K or so, then gotten rid of. Most people do not keep them that long, as a lot are traded in on something newer. But I keep a car until it dies. Still have a 1999 Grand Prix with some underbody NJ rust on it. But it is good for around town trips.

I've always kept a piece of sheet metal about 18" x 18" to put against the back of the rad core to protect it.

Loving the series so far! One thing though, when asking Hannah to lower the engine a little, I wouldn't have my arm in there, just in case she accidentally turns the valve the wrong way. Brain fade can happen to the best of us! Keep them videos coming!

I tinker with my car as long as it's parts I can have access to and can work on in my parking space without getting caught by management (big city life)but taking engines apart or out completely is what separates the pros from hacks like me. Enjoy watching others do it though!

you can do an engine swap in a parking spot but you have to be quick!

Looks like once you took the cross member off, the engine would fall out if you the top mounts off, instead of taking the water pump off and pulling from above.

hello eric, I like the video. Can you tell me if the 3.6 pentastar flexwheel is attached the same way as the 3.8 you're working on. It doesn't appear that there is access to it thought a bell housing.
