Spearfishing Fiji Kadavu - Spearfishing Dravuni Reef
In the forth episode of the Kadavu trip, we are spearfishing the astrolobe reef. Today targeting the reef, we manage to pull in a good haul of species to feed ourselves and others in the village.

All fish were of legal size and were speared for consumption. I abide by catch size limits, daily takes, and no fish zones. Over the past 5 years now I have made the commitment to no longer buy fish, so I only eat the fish I catch.
Spearfishing is the most sustainable form of fishing on the planet, it is also the most environmentally friendly form of fishing.

Beautiful pictures and adventure.Gone are the days when we used to spear giant trevallys,large coral trouts,spanish mackeral,etc at the Dravuni astrolabe in the 1980s. Looking at the sizes of the fishes you speared at Dravuni, you have litterally highlighted the declining fish stocks around the astrolabe compared to the sizes we used to catch. This I believe is due to night spear fishing and overfishing around the astrolabe. I look forward to petitioning the Fisheries department towards conservation methods to restore fish stocks around the Dravuni astrolabe and Kadavu waters.Thank you.Vinaka & moce mada.

Youve hit the nail on the head here. Whilst there still are decent fish around they are nowhere near in the numbers i had seen in 2015 and 16. Its very clear to me that night spearfishing needs to be banned. Great regulation of size limits and enforcement and daily take limits.

@@WetMammal Yes m8.Night spearfishing has to be banned. What's even worse is that we the people of Dravuni aren't the custodians of our fishing grounds anymore.The current Fiji government have promulgated laws that takes away our custodianship.So anyone can spearfish at night without our consent which we used to safeguard, protect in the past years.

Hey Sam! Was it tricky getting your speargun over to Fiji? Me and the Mrs are heading over later in the year and the travel agent said that I'd need to apply for a licence? You've been a massive influence in my spearing journey, thanks for all you do man! - from a fellow brit living in Aus

Hey Jake, No licence required for Fiji just declare it as fishing equipment and make sure its clean for bio. No worries thank you for sharing that man, it genuinely spurs me on to keep making more. 🤙🏼

hey Sam it's great following you along for this trip. Now that travel is possible the missus and I have been looking at indo, solomon islands, fiji etc as spearfishing destinations. How do you find Fiji cost wise? How much is accom and your average day trip to dive locations? cheers

Hey man, thank you! Fiji is awesome cost wise because you can go super budget or go large so there is something for everything. Budget $50 -$500 a day for fuel depending on the type of boat. Accommodation the sky is the limit man some places are dirt cheap others are more expensive but you tend to get what you pay for here. Hope that helps man
