This week I give you three easy and fun exercises to strengthen up your soft palate so that your voice sounds less nasal. This can be a problem for people after stroke, brain injury, other neurological disease, and cleft palate.
EDIT: pinching off the nasal passages creates a hypernasal voice, not hypernasal. Hypernasal speech sounds more like air is escaping during speaking.

I had no idea your soft pallet was meant to close off to your nasal passage when speaking. This feels like an entirely new way to talk for me... the diagram showing it was just a massive lightbulb moment. Mind blown.

Hello, You may have something going on, there should be a difference in resonance when you close your nose. An ENT may be able to help figure out what is going on anatomically. Thanks Sierra

I was born with cleft palate. I get made fun of because of it. I even got speech therapy all my life, although it didn’t work at all. But this… I can feel my palate actually touching/closed when doing the exercises. I keep thinking to myself that I need surgery even though I’ve had it a couple times, but maybe this might help if I constantly do this. Thank you, I’m 100% doing these every day so it can improve my voice

I appreciate this video a lot. I recently started receiving speech therapy at 36 years old in South Korea following a Muscle Tension Dysphonia diagnosis. The speech therapist has been diligent and putting as much effort as I have however, his English is about as good as my Korean is (I'm an English speaking American) so it has been a struggle to fully comprehend some of what he has been attempting to communicate.

Now that I am 57, someone recently pointed out to me that I sounded a bit nasally in my KZfaq videos. I used to go to a speech therapist in elementary school, but I can't remember the exercises. I feel like another cause of a nasally voice is mouth breathing. There has been a ton of studies done on mouth breathing and how it messes up your skull/jaw/chin development and physical structure, how it ruins your posture, it leads to development of snoring and sleep apnea, and is overall bad for humans because that's not how we evolved. We evolved to breathe through our noses. So I feel like if mouth breathing can do all that,, and physically change your skeleton, then then it is probably able to cause a underdeveloped or weak soft palette and therefore cause a nasally voice.

Thank you :) I have sinus/allergies and blocked eustation (ear) tubes. I have a slightly nasal speaking and singing voice, mostly I can tell when I'm tired/just woken up or there's nasal issues. How many times per day would I do these exercises? What would be the approximate time it would start fixing it, and would I keep doing this (as maintenance)? I use a balloon to pop pressure in my ears, and sometimes use saline spray, but nothing is really helping the crackling sound as I open my jaw/yawn. Would these exercises help? My voice is clearish (I sound like a little 5 year old sometimes lol) I just want to get the little bit of nasal out. Thank you. :)

Hello, These exercises are suggested to be a part of a comprehensive treatment plan. They might help in that case and with weeks of doing them every day. There are other ways to help with nasality as well that someone who can see you in person may be able to help you find. Good luck!

I am narrating now and have gotten to know my voice more intimately than I ever have before. There is a click somewhere in my head (between my nose and ear) after almost every vocal cadence, unless the phrase ends with an N or an M. I can't quite pinpoint it but most likely it's nasal cavity related. The click is not really audible until I mix the track. Then it becomes very audible and I have to use mixing software to remove the clicks. I've discovered that the clicks are triggered when I stop exhaling at the end of the last word in the phrase. I've tried the techniques you demonstrated and they were helpful last night when I was lying in bed. Today, however, while SITTING in font of my computer monitor and after performing the nasal exercises, the clicks did not go away. I am from Long Island NY, we use our nose a lot when we speak. HAHA. Does any of what I described raise an eyebrow?

Hello Sierra and thank you so much, this is very helpful! I have a specific question: I'm a college student who was born with a partial cleft palate and am working to reduce my hypernasality. My doctor said I have really good articulation and the problem is mainly that there's a gap on the right side of the velum when it should be completely blocking air flow, letting a lot more air go through than normal. Will these exercises help with that? is there any way to strengthen one side of my cleft palate in particular? Thanks again :)

Hello Mahmoud, One good option for more severe VPI is to use a prosthetic that is worn like a retainer, it holds the velum up higher, or they can have surgery to increase likelihood of closure. Thanks for the question, Sierra

Hi Qazal, A speech therapist can help to determine what might be happening in your mouth when you try and use those sounds, and they might refer you to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat doctor). And I wouldn't worry about not being able to say "hmm" while holding your nose, no one can! Best of luck.

Hey I was wondering if this can help me sound less gay? I have a problem sounding feminine and some people say I sound nasally, can these exercises help me sound more straight?
