@StrongestNormal
@StrongestNormal 4 жыл бұрын
@@tnamen1307 you have to have power at the fuel pump before the engine is running. otherwise there isn't any pressure in the fuel system and then your engine wouldn't get any fuel when your try to crank it, certainly when your car has stood still for like 2 weeks any pressure in the system is gone. depending on what motor you have, direct injected motor have an high pressure pump. the fuel pump in your fuel tank builds up pressure until around (3 bar, depending on what application you have) and sends it to the high pressure pump where it gets compressed until around 100 bar

Just what I needed to learn: thank you! You saved me the trouble of taking my old one apart. My Astro's fuel filter is separate from the tank, and its pressure regulator is built into the carburetor. It thus requires a return line to the tank from the carburetor. It's amazing that my new pump can put out as much as 60 psi with just that simple impeller you showed us, that is, if the fuel is blocked from flowing by a pressure measuring gauge. I didn't measure the flow rate, but adjusting the constriction to flow is how the pressure is controlled.

Hey fella just wanted to come back and thankyou for this video because it taught me that my GM Agila a uk vehicle fuel filter was in the fuel pump assembly and it was stuffed full of crap. I had done the usual that is changed the pump initially and no change until I saw your video. cant tell you how brilliant your video was for me. I bought a complete unit and tested it off the car like you did and the pressure went from 7psi to 55psi and I new I was on the right track. Most other videos only focus on the pump. yours showed it all and I am a definate follower for the duration. You are a star in my view. Thanks for helping me!! I dont however understand why manufacturers put fuel filter in the unit anyway. I always thought fuel filters were outside so that they could more easily be changed. Go figure ay!! I'm just preparing to replace my fuel filter, didn't think I really wanted to get into the fuel pump / sending unit assembly at the moment but it's really quite simple and clever. Didn't realise the float and low petrol light were different mechanisms, I guess it's good to still have the dash light if your float circuitry fails for any reason. And it's just using the fuel as a conductor which disappears below a certain level, again so simple. I think we often get tricked into thinking things are really complex because the overall system is. It's great how you break these things down to make it more digestible.

That showed why its so important to never run out of fuel. The fuel going through the pump actually cools and lubricates the motor. Without it a fuel pump will overheat very quickly and that shortens its life.

Note to self: The guy used a battery and some jumper leads to send power to the fuel sending unit after it was taken out of the car. This caused water to be circulated in a pan of water that he set the pump down into. So it doesn't have to be gasoline that moves within the pump, apparently it won't be damaged by water going through it and a 12 volt battery can power it. Also, it appears that the float and variable resistor combo does NOT tell the car if the tank is close to empty, it appears there is a separate sensor that does that. Note that the gasoline itself is what keeps the Direct Current motor inside of the fuel pump cool. There's also a pressure regulator, not only beside the throttle body injection unit, but one inside the fuel pump too. It's usually encased inside a large black plastic box and makes up the bulk of the fuel pump aside from that part which is mostly air inside the casing.

The fuel level sensor is a thermistor that stays cool when submerged so its resistance is high. When not submerged, it starts to get warm from the current and heat up. More and more current flows as it warms which allows the light on the dash to illuminate.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 6 жыл бұрын
+Jay _ that a a good thought, thanks
@rmatalanga
@rmatalanga 6 жыл бұрын
Jay_ you are wrong. The fuel level sensor is not a thermistor. It is a variable resistor (rheostat) whose output resistance (middle terminal) depends on the position of the arm which in turn depends on the amount of fuel in the tank. However, there are some vehicles, especial those with a return fuel line, that have a thermistor in the fuel tank. The purpose of this is to send the fuel temperature to the ECM for engine performance
@bobchiggs

You're talking about the low level light for the thermistor. The fuel quantity or fuel level is a series of resistors.

Thanks, very nice video to understand insights of a fuel pump. I found very valuable to see the pumping volume while working and also the working principle of the filter fuel bypass valve.

Never seen a toothbrush used as a pointer before quite interesting..... Think the variable resistor is called a potentiometer....... Also before you take the pump out good idea to blow the top of the tank with compressed air before you remove it otherwise all the junk and dust and rust will drop into the clean fuel tank... Good video I like seeing things taken apart like that it’s very helpful and for the most part all the different models of car doesn’t matter the fuel pumps are essentially similar....

Good tips.... though if you see my EVAP system video, the tank was cut apart to see what's inside.

This Fuel pump assembly is unique in that the pump, regulator, and filter are all combined into one unit. For example, my car has a fuel filter by the tank under the car, the regulator is by the engine block, and the pump is obviously in the tank. It seems like the video is saying that the pump has both a filter and a regulator but it usually doesn't.

Very informative video , the fuel level low sensor I think is a heated resistor and ecu check the resistance change, when fuel is not touching the resistance it gets more heated and increasing the resistance indicate low fuel level.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's just based on resistance. Nothing to do with heat given how it's wired.
