Some of you missed the point, this isnt a review (check out our Review for the Review, a solid 7/10), this a spoilers discussion in which we do nitpick the film and spoil various twists. Also I agree Mysterio is well done for his on screen version, I said as much he's accurate, OJ and Alex didnt like him - I did. However that doesnt change that his backstory is very close to Vultures, why did they have to do that? Why not make him an illusionist having nothing to do with Tony. Everything is related to Tony and id like for Spiderman to move past that (after this film, since Tony's death needs to be dealt with). More importantly when seen as a whole Mysterio's plan doesnt make much sense in the long run and could never have succeeded, if someone can explain how it could have, and how it wasnt dumb if just any amount of army showed up, please let me know. Our opinion is that the film is at its best with the MJ and Vacation aspects, and alright visually and with its action in Mysterio but not so much as Mysterio as a Strong Character himself. Thats mostly our opinion.

@@ganoncooley5318 don't get me wrong, one scene doesn't elevate the whole movie but I am a bit of a Spider-Man fan boy so I could be clouded in my judgement! Vulture's motivation was never to get revenge on Tony Stark, his motivations was to make money to provide for his family. He was pissed that Tony Stark stopped his salvaging operation but when he realised that he could make profit by making stuff themselves and selling it on the black market that's what he did. After that he did went after Stark tech a lot but that's simply because that's the best gear there is. At some point he said something like 'People like Stark, they dont care about us, we eat their scraps...' That sounded more like a rant from someone of the middle class working his ass off while he feel that the upper class is fucking him over rather than a personnal vendetta against Tony. Mysterio however had a motivation to steal Stark tech because he was the engineer behind the drone simulation thing and Tony stole it, gave it the name barf and then fired him, he says it in the exposition scene. He had a chance to become famous and rich with this breakthrough but Stark fucked him. After that he used the super hero personna to get the people's attention et be famous because in the world of the MCU, superheroes are super popular (no wonder). Eneway, though the two villains seem similar in their motivations, they're not the same.

the main problem is that it all comes down to tony stark. As such, spiderman gets overshadowed in his own movie and their seems to be a lack of connection between the villain and spiderman. Vulture worked because i saw it more as due to avengers fault. Meanwhile in far from home, it was all about tony's tech and spiderman just seemed like an after thought.
@sonofquebec
@sonofquebec 5 жыл бұрын
@@creativecookbook I think in the first movie it was relevent that tony stark was there and that the vilain was after him more than spiderman because spiderman was just a teenager trying to help the neighborhood and getting into something much bigger than him. However I agree that it was a little bit too much that tony was once again one of the main point in the second movie, I personnaly was expecting to see Scorpion apears, since he was in the after credit scene in homecoming. But with that epic after credit scene at the end of far from home, I'm sure he's gonna be in the third act. Maybe they did that whole connection with tony to show that spiderman will be the leader of the next part in the mcu? I would rather see him lead in the future than captain marvel.

@@creativecookbook But it's supposed to be about Tony. The MCU version of Spider-Man has been HUGELY dependant on Iron Man. Not to mention Spider-Man gives us a look at the street level consequences of what all the bigger heroes do in their own movies. Mysterio was perfect for me. He has a reason for tricking Peter specifically while staying true to his comic counterpart. He's a petty villain with an overgrown ego - as all Spidey villains should be.

Well, Iron Man's villains are people whom the Stark family screwed over. Spiderman is just picking up the baton. First film's villain is Howard Stark's business partner. Second film is Howard Stark's lab partner. Third film is Tony snubbing a potential business partner. Age of Ultron, Tony screwing himself over. Homecoming, Tony screwing over a blue collared family man. Far From Home, Stark Industries screwing employees over. It's like poetry it rhymes.

Absolutely right. As much as I enjoyed the MCU so far, I made a breakdown early last year, never posted it however, so here it is now. Iron man 1: businessman angry at tony, for taking up the responsibility of stark industries and being in the spotlight, and not doing shady deals Iron man 2: businessman angry at tony, for his father’s demise and for having his originally created ark tech taken away by the starks, wanting revenge, and to bring tony down for who he really is Iron man 3: businessman angry at tony, for leaving him alone years ago on the terrace on a New Year’s Eve and not making the deal with his AIM organization and supporting the extremis augmentation project Spider-Man-homecoming: businessman angry at tony, for dismantling the cleaning up business that helped support his livelihood, and at Spider-Man for interrupting his thefts of scavenged tech from avengers battles to make money Spiderman far from home: businessman angry at tony, for being fired, taking his program concept and renaming it barf (an ai holographic modelling program), and angry at spidey for interrupting his destructive conquest to become a makeshift superhero by destroying fake illusionary threats/projections and make spidey look bad, just like in iron man 1, how tony was made to be a bad guy in the public eye by “the dude” (Obadiah stane/iron monger) 🤯 Marvel, what a continuity!

Exactly. Tf did they expect to happen. It's all about how it was executed n it was executed quite well in my opinion. His backstory also made sense for the MCU n it was cool how they tied in little callbacks from other MCU movies to go with his story. It might not be super unique or anything but that's the point I feel. Villains can be made out of normal people who go thru normal shit due to the events of previous movies. I like that angle personally.

I knew Mysterio, obviously, but the con actually got me, simply because of how they played it and because the MCU is known to change things up. Mysterio's lack of any real power makes him a prime candidate for an origin change, and I think that's part of what sold it.

Mysterio is also able to trick Spiderman in the comics, which means spider sense isn't fool-proof. I assume Peter has to really concentrate to be able to use it to the point that he can close his eyes, and I think that's what they were trying to show -- he had to hone his spider sense to a level not necessary before, since his spider sense contradicts his sight. So let me get this straight.... The reason you guys felt that Mysterio was a weak villain... Is because he's too much like the comics? Dafuq? And already you lost me with your review with comparison to vulture. Toomes(vulture) did NOT become a villain to get revenge on Tony Stark. Yes he was pissed Tony took over damage control essentially putting him out of a job, but he went into the weapons business to help his family. And I thought it was already stated that for this version of spiderman, the spidersense was something that he had to develop, he didn't just know how to use it. And of course we saw Mysterio coming, he's Mysterio!!! He's a lying manipulative scumbag

You misunderstood the 'Peter-tingle' thing - in previous MCU movies he only experienced it a few times, and reacted to that feeling (oh man, look at my hair standing up) before looking around for the oncoming danger. At the start of this movie he has already realised that it works as some sort of danger sense, but he still isn't very used to it and hardly feels anything for lesser dangers (like a slow-moving banana compared to, say a bullet) - hence he doesn't even have a name for it yet. Once he fully starts trusting this sense as a Spider-sense, like he does at the end, he's just that much better at anticipating danger and being able to ignore the illusions. Also I don't see anyone saying much that Mysterio isn't dead (Not the person playing him, though that's also possible) - in the MCU now, 'Mysterio' is an entire team of people. The heroes don't even know about this team, so someone else (the box of scraps guy) can take up the mantle, use holograms to make him look like the original and just go on with their plan. I foresee this as a long-running threat, even teaming up with other villains or providing them with tech a la Hydra for at least one or two more movies

Copied my comment from another thread but: I thought Mysterio was stupid because his plan was dumb. It all hinged on no other Avenger interfering, no Avenger taking Nick Fury's calls and being available, and Nick Fury agreeing that Spider-Man would make a smart tactical ally against what's portrayed as these big magical beings that aren't subdued by conventional weapons... which Spider-Man really wasn't and in the movie he was mostly just a distraction. Mysterio convinced Fury so hard that Fury organized a school trip just to get Peter to the locations set by Mysterio. Which why did he pick Europe for this?? Then his plan requires him to convince Peter to hand over control of Edith directly to him, a man from another dimension who I would expect would want to return home at some point if it were real which Edith would make no sense for him to have. Also why did Peter assume Mysterio even knows or understands the tech and potential of Edith? His plan also leans on knowing that control of Edith is even transferable and Tony not having a contingency plan in the event Peter is coerced, tricked, or forced to give up control. ALSO EDITH RECOGNIZES PEOPLE AND ITEMS IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND DISPLAYS INFORMATION ABOUT THEM AND IT SOMEHOW DIDN'T PICK UP ON HIS FACE MATCHING ONE OF AN EX EMPLOYEE?!?!?! So yeah Mysterio was really really dumb HOWEVER him being a dude that displays holograms was really cool and the sequences with him surrounding Peter were excellent.

yeah me too, I liked this better than Homecoming. It felt like this was more about Peter Parker's life and how his Spiderman identity and responsibilities affects those around him, those he loves and his own personal life. Kinda reminded me of Spider Man 2, which we all loved because of those reasons. I thought Mysterio was well done, although I knew Mysterio was a villain, it still felt interesting to see his relationship with Peter Parker and that he didnt mean no harm to Peter, he just got in the way. I felt for all those people fucked over by Tony Stark, and its much more personal than Vulture's ''I deserve to make more money'' mentality, which had nothing to do with Tony specifically, but was more about the ''us vs elites'' idea. My only gripe was the Spider tingle and how it was resolved, it could have been done much much better. It felt unexplained, why he lost that power, although I did figure it out during the movie, that he has a trauma from Tony's death and the pressure on him to become the next Iron Man. OK, I was fine with that, but the way Peter gets Spider-Sense back was just stupid.

Peter doesn't care about saving people in this movie unless they're his friends. His big lesson in this movie is "sempai believed in you the whole time". I was constantly questioning why he was even a hero in this movie since saving people is such a huge inconvenience to him. And you know, maybe they'll explore that, but no. By the end he still doesn't care about saving people, but since Tony believed in him, guess he'll do it.

So someone tell me if I'm wrong or if this was an error in the movie. When Peter gave the glasses to Beck he had to confirm the transferring of EADITH's uses to Beck. Well at the end when Peter takes the glasses off of Beck he just takes them and starts using them. Wouldn't Beck have had to confirm with EADITH the switch back to Peter or are we just assuming that Peter was given unlimited use to EADITH and didn't need to be reconfirmed as a user regardless of who else is authorized to use her at the time?

Mysterio was potrayed exacyly the way Mysterio was in the comics Yes, we all saw the plot twist coming, because we alredy know this is howMysterio operates, he's an egomaniac who wants to be potrayed as the hero but always fails in the end because he's very short sighted, and in that scense, they nailed it (even the fish bowl head!) He still got positive changes form the source material, they gave a more "realistic" explanation to his ilusions (in the comics he just used an hallucinogen gas that never really epxlains how he can contorl the ilusions) plus, his ilusions can't really harm anyone in the comics, yet here in the movie they found a way to make them be threathening as the drones beneath the ilusion are the ones causing the damage, like REAL damage. Sorry guys, you may have dilsiked Mysterio but to me he was perfeclty potrayed and he was exactly everything I was expecting & looking for Mysterio in the big screen. Face it, Disney turned Spiderman into some softcore cornball bullshit just like they did star wars. How do they make a coming of age Spiderman movie after this fucker already has gone through so much shit including going up against Thanos TWICE and watching his mentor die in front of his damn face! Not to mention what happened in civil war and homecoming. By now he should've already been the fuckin man, and we got just a tiny glimpse of that AT THE VERY END! Maybe Mysterio WAS meant to be corny, ok I might see how that could be true, but Jesus Christ I thought I was watching an actual Disney sitcom like Suite Life or That's so Raven when I watched Mysterio being portrayed in this movie. Okay.... 3 minutes in and you already do not understand what's happening with his spider-sense. Aunt May or Peter never said he didn't have his spider-sense right now. He just doesn't fully developed it yet, which explains why Nick Fury can sneak up on him. And it's great growth of character that now he is able to fully utilize it after fighting Mysterio's illusions. This is an amazing plot point, in my opinion, and I'm sorry to say, you're an idiot for being angry at that. (edit) BTW, Jake Gyllenhaal was great as Mysterio. I loved the adaptation of the Vulture (with him being a scavenger and a suit design that's different than the Falcon) and Mysterio is on par, if not better.

Joe coming from somebody who is well informed of the Spider-Man comics I didn’t mind seeing the twist on film. It was very well done and entertaining I don’t know how else they could of done it now your point of him not having spider sense I contribute to him not wanting to be Spider-Man and being stressed out over the effects of infinity war/ endgame. Also he still doesn’t fully understand his powers in homecoming/civil war there are scenes where his spider sense is used but he doesn’t fully understand it. Now with this film he fully understands his powers and the third film will have a fully powered Spider-Man that is experienced and knows his powers. You can even look at the web swinging web shooting and flipping in this movie and it’s very well done and Spider-Man Comic book like in fact I think it’s the best since tasm 2/tasm swinging so I personally like the development of Spider-Man in this movie and is showing how he is becoming stronger and independent. I do have a big problem with the villain always being tied with iron man. I do wish the next villain is someone truly evil and just wants to kill Spider-Man because they hate Spider-Man other than just being a disgruntled person that hates iron man. This films actions scenes are great. The humor lands very well. The last fight scene is also great along with mysterio using all his powers to make him walk into train was great. So I think this film was very good as long as you don’t nitpick and just enjoy it. Jk Simmons was great and really makes u think if he gets to come back who else could return? Could they actually get tobey to return to be Spider-Man in a multiverse film? All this is hypothetical speaking of course but I would love to see a live action spider verse film with past Spider-Man’s & Spider-Man villains returning

You can see that Spider-Man’s stories are all based around Iron Man, which I like. The fact that the villains are spawned by the mistakes of Iron Man, the sins of the father come to roost, puts some perspective on Iron Man. After endgame we see him as a hero, the perfect hero, godfather of the mcu, the ultimate hero, so everyone is looking at him with rose tinted glasses.
