Pea and Ham soup, my favourite. Here in Australia we don't see gammon so much in the supermarket but in the winter we have bacon bones or a ham hock and I make our pea and ham soup with these. Also I use the yellow split peas but I suppose there isn't much difference. Now I'm hungry for pea and ham soup and soda bread. Enjoyed this video.

Another Aussie here and oh yup, ham hocks from the butcher or even better (to me for some reason) those frozen leftover ham bones from the Christmas leg of ham. Yum!

@@tanialane1267How are you ? Good to meet you. I don’t think I actually know what Gammon is. We are in the south coast of NSW and I grew up in Canberra I don’t think I have seen it here, have you? Not to worry, ham bone is pretty good either way. I think allot of the allure of dishes like these are because they are hard wired in our brains to feed our bellies and comfort our minds so if our mothers did it, it’s golden. Oh and it would be lovely to have some after Christmas Ham but never any left at our place. I’d have to hide it from my lot to keep it. Ha ha I’m not that brave😊

Yes i agree, you're a no nonsense home cook. No going into the forest foraging looking for nettle leaves at 7am As soon as i hear the word foraging from a tv chef, I turn off. Such a delight to watch and hear an unpretentious lady cook, true to her family and areas roots. Howay the lads. Im gannen yem noo.

Thank you. I love and appreciate your cooking, tips and videos so much and truly hope you don't change no matter how popular your channel gets. My only suggestion (or request, depending on how you look at it) would be that an ingredients list (and rough number of servings) was added to the description to make it easier for me to prepare for and then follow your recipes. Again, truly thank you for being exactly who you are! ☺️

Just a handy hint - if you need buttermilk for a recipe but don’t have any available, just add a tablespoon of lemon juice to regular milk and wait 10-20 mins, and hey presto…buttermilk substitute. I’ve used it many times, works a treat. Thank you for your lovely cooking ideas. 😊

Another great vid from you, thanks. Pea & ham soup is my fave, I used to make it myself but living on your own there's always too much so the other day I bought some from a bakery near me, it was like a huge tub of mushy peas, the spoon could stand up in it! lol I think it was getting to the end of service and they'd just scraped the dregs into the cup. That went in the bin! Yours looks just like my mum used to make, absolutely lovely and the bread too Love your videos

I always use a ham hock to make stock for soups, I use 2 tins of whole plum tomatoes mixed with the stock and the cubed meat from the cooked ham hock, simmer for 30 minutes, then blitz with a hand blender, gives you a nice thick Tomato soup , I serve it with toasted slices of French bread piled high with grated cheese then melted under the grill, makes a good combo
