A spooked horse North Yorkshire well recovered by rider.
To add because of some of the comments.... It is a motorbike I am on, at the time it was a year old and totally standard so VERY quiet (Camera mounted within a foot of the engine), yes the horse rider did apologise, and I was sh*ting myself as turning off my engine put me in a position of great vulnerability with no way of getting out of the way, we were in a position where visibility for other vehicles reaching the scene was compromised. This was also a 60mph speed limit road further increasing the risks.

I would actually just like to thank you for switching your engine off...4 days ago was having a similar issue as this girl. My horse was rearing and spinning and I was on a road walking from my competition back to my farm (which is a 7 minute walk) and many other people were trucking back in horseboxes... I have to unfortunately say non of them stopped to help, non of them slowed down... nothing! So actually a big thanks to people like you who do stop, and an even bigger thank you to you specifically for switching your engine off.

+Sean H Horses hearing is incredible they will always hear before the rider, I don't think the rider is not paying attention as a horse owner and rider myself I know hearing is limited on horseback, with helmet on and wind in your ears, hoof falls on concrete, other vehicles etc. Thank you for being considerate when approaching horse riders, we love people like you :) I remember before becoming a rider myself as a child I would get excited and greet riders waving at them and smiling and I always wondered why they looked so stern and unfriendly. Now I realize that they are not being unfriendly but concentrating and trying to control a 1000 lb animal in a heavily stimulated environment.

We were almost in a crash last weekend because a lorry came up behind us at about 50mph on a 30mph limit very narrow country road and one of the tie down ropes on the side hit my poor boy on the bum, luckily he jumped into a hedge rather than into the path of the oncoming traffic or we might not escaped with dented pride and a couple of scratches!

I ride horses in both countries and what I see in this clip just confirms all my experiences of riding on roads anywhere in Britain: Fabulous drivers when it comes to horses, so careful, patient and friendly. I wish German drivers would be only 10% like that, riding on German roads would be much more of a pleasure! Well done, biker. :)

Yeah right. I live in the netherlands and omg. I rode horses so ofcourse i always slow down/stand still and move the car all the way to the other side of the road if i can. Depending on how the horse and rider are responding. Usually i see this getting allert respond from the riders, getting prepared for an ahole on the road that doesnt care, and i will see them relax and them being relieved if they see i am slowing down and giving them space. I always get thanked a lot, which says a lot about the other people who have passed them. But gosh... I went to belgium with a local bus. He went through a forest kinda road. And there were these two woman riding their frysians. The buss driver didnt slow down at all, and he didnt even move the buss more to the right to make more room between him and the horses, even though there werent any other cars comming towards us. He passed them really close... With idunno at least 60 km/hour. One of the horses started rearing bc of that ofcourse... It fucking drove me nuts. I wanted to yell at the buss driver. Like ffs... I really hope that woman and that horse are okay. What did he think tbh? It isnt a car, its an animal that can get spooked and can get hurt, with a human on it that can get hurt as well. I have respect for everyone that has the courage to ride on the road tbh.

Bike rider did a great job slowing down, stopping, turning his engine off and being patient, top man! It is standard in the UK to ride on the roads as either there are no bridleways or you usually have to ride on the road to reach them (which I'm sure many riders would do without given the choice!) and as mentioned before road studs can be added to shoes to minimise slipping. Trotting is no problem provided you are aware of how long you are trotting for during a ride (over do anything and you will cause problems) and how fit your horse is, in this situation the rider rightfully did it to get out of the way for the bike to pass, save the horse being continually stressed by it's presence. And finally, horses were granted the permenant legal right to use roads in England after WW1 in honour of the horses who took part and died in the war. Overall this situation was well handled imo!

this is for all you annoying rats commenting; 1. This horse was not cantering on the road. He was trotting. 2. Trotting is not bad for the horse when on the road. The only gaits out of the four you shouldn't do on the road are canter and gallop 3. Horses have just as much right to be on the road as other modes of transport 4. In the UK there are not alot of places to ride bc many fields are restricted and privately owned, beaches don't allow horses and bridleways are scarce so riding on the road is the last option. 5. If you don't ride or handle horses you have no right to comment

I have to ride on a couple main roads. I can safely say that motorcyclists are the most impressive on the road, very respectful and friendly. A friend and I had a whole gang of about 20 or so go by us, all 20 of them cut their engines far before reaching us and glided past us silently. We were so grateful and yelled thank you several times so the whole line heard us. Even a cool young guy on a street racing bike cut his engine and was very cautious of us. Bravo. :)

You are quite kind and did everything you could do to make the situation better. Thank you for your courtesy; I can tell the rider turned off as soon as she could and I am sure was quite thankful for your assistance! I'm sure she did feel bad, too, for putting you in such a position (it was risky for everyone). In the US I think a lot of people don't understand, as it would be pretty unheard of to ride on a road like this; but if it's common in the UK, and it appears it could be as there are no shoulders to those narrow, narrow roads!, then what choice do people without a riding arena have but to take their rides to roadways?

miskaffon Yep, I live in the US and have had to ride about half a mile down a narrow and winding road just like this one. It was not fun at all. What's with the people saying its bad for horses to trot/walk on the roads and wear shoes. We HAVE to ride on the roads at our riding school to actually get to the yard, 90% of the horses have at least front shoes on. None of the horses have ever gone lame because we ride them on the roads, shoes aren't bad! We use shoes on our horses because it makes their hooves stronger, they are much less sensitive to things and they are never in pain from them. Don't say they are painful for the horse, they can't feel the nails in the hoof wall because surprise, there's no nerves! Their hooves are like our nails, do we feel anything when we cut our nails or if something went through it? No. Rant over.

CynicalPony I want to add is that it a horse spooks and it has front shoes. It can spread its front legs out and slip cause of the less traction on the rode. My riding Instructor had a horse do this and almost got a Cuncusion I believe or the horse could slip and fall on the rider.I understand you can walk and trot just becarful and make sure your not riding a horse that spooks at everyday things.

We've had a few instances where a horse has slipped on the road, fortunately nobody was hurt. We are very careful, if we didn't have to ride on the road we wouldn't. We have to ride down a main road where we can get lorries zooming past at times, one time the horses spooked at a noisy trailer and 3 went galloping down the road, again- nobody was hurt. All of our horses who ride on the road are checked regularly and always come out perfectly sound, we choose and ride our horses wisely. And wear hi-viz A big rule we have is don't trot round corners 1. You can't see what's there 2. There's a high risk of slipping So we're pretty cautious :)

CynicalPony i agree with you that shoes dont cause pain however i disagree that they make them stronger. if you were to walk around with shoes on as normal for one month doing your every day stuff like grocery shopping, walking the dog ect.ect. youd be fine yes? ok now take your shoes off and do everything the same... barefoot. how much would it damage your feet. a lot yes . but if you had never put the shoes on in the first place your feet would be accustomed to it and therefore be stronger than if you were to have to take the shoes off after wearing them same goes for horses. horses that have never worn shoes in comparison to those that have. the horses WITHOUT the shoes will have infinately stronger hooves that the other

I'd really like to thank you for being so considerate and careful. I've been training one of my stables more sensitive horses lately, and we found ourselves in a pasture close to the side of a minor road. The horse was already a bit nervous about it, but him and I took things slow. What I was scared of ended up happening. A truck purposely honked their horn and revved their engine, causing my horse to spook. I can't explain how frustrating it is to come so far with training, and then take 3 steps back because people are so careless. Not to mention the possibility of my horse and I getting hurt, broken tack, me getting bucked off and my horse running off, etc. Thank you for all that you did here. It truly means a lot to me as an equestrian.

If you loosen the reins and the horse lifts it's head you have no control and nothing to hang on to. Ideally you really shouldn't be hanging on to the reins, but on road you can't risk having no control. Even if the horse isn't spooked, only a bit suprised, it might wonder around to the other lane and if this happens in a corner where the driver can't see the danger, you have a perfect disaster.
@mikeandjenny88

ast5515 You hang on to their mane/saddle horn (unless it's a english saddle) & you also hang on with you're legs. You should not ride with a horse tight reined. (except a bit when jumping). How are u gonna have no control "if the horse raises their head"? The head is raised while you're i motion..u think the horse moves with his head down while he is being ridden?? & "Ideally u shouldn't really be hanging onto the reins"? Who "taught" u how to ride?? Of course you should! Always, especially on a road. Ok, u don't have the reins & the horse spooks & 1 falls down & slaps the horse in the chest, then they REALLY spook & take off running at full speed & you're fucked because if u yank on only 1 rein at that speed, you'll turn the horses head so far, he'll go in a circle while losing his balance & fall on u.

Yes, but it was been obvious the Horse spooked because Motorbike have had a mad sound, Most Bikers dont care Horses they just are ignorant because they love the Sound the machine does. But this Biker was one of a kind that slowed down or even turned of the Engine. Thank god the girl and Horse been okay. I would be embarassed if i was her, because she might of tought her Horse was save on Streets.

+Sean H It was not the bike... there propably was something in the bushes. the horse didn't spook ar first, it just wanted to go on the other side of the road (rider tried pushing it back, it didn't want, it spooked.) It was not the goddamn bike. And yes I know that every horse rider apologizes. I am one^^ I was just telling here why she did :) (blocking the street you know) and again: If you really watch the horse you can see that it is not spooked by the bike. Horses do that sometimes. They freak for the dumbest reasons. You could go through hell with my old horse, he would never freak out but cut - down wood would always try to catch and eat him xDD

OMG Do you think the horse is scared of the bike??? The horse was scared of somehting but not the bike. The objuect of the fear was in front of the horse which is why it wont go FORWARD. In fact the horse beautifully avoided the bike which it was well aware of. For the 2nd time a big clap to rider of both bike & horse. And in relation to comments further down - horses dont like to 'run things/bikes/wheely bins/ or people over. This only ever happens in blind panic or through some tragic accident, if horses ran things over they wouldnt be used in crowd control by the police - the rider did not steer the horse round the bike, the horse avoided it (the horse is actually looking at the bike in its nearside (left) eye. Not quite a rant but i'm just getting started lol :p

Country lanes/ roads can be a temptation for speeding so you are lucky that they were all sensible especially the person on the motor bike he was patient enough to wait until you were off the road. Well done for collecting your horse and getting him to calm back down! x

I think this was a great video. Being a bit 'spooky' myself when on horseback, it did me good to watch a composed rider deal with something unexpected which benefits the horse as well as the rider. As for the motorist, you were very considerate and smart to manage as you did (and brave from the sounds of it!). I am fortunate to live where I do (Idaho, USA) because in many places equestrians (read: Cowboy/girl/kid lol) still have the right-of-way and can use roads as needed; most of our horses adapt to it but it does take patience, training and a quiet rider as well as considerate drivers to keep everyone safe. All did well and it looks like a beautiful place with kind, smart people! I'm so happy none were harmed and it came out all right. (and incidentally for those being so judgmental, your horse can every bit as easily damage their legs if you work them incorrectly on soft footing...the bloody horse was walking, no harm done at all.)

Not all drivers are like this in Yorkshire, I was riding my mare when a motorbike passed us, about 3 inches away from my mares rear end, causing her to run into the middle of the road, whilst rearing, and trapping her leg in a bike wheel from a passing cyclist on the opposite side of the road. I wish all drivers would think about the cautions when passing a horse rider on a busy road. Thank goodness my mare didn't spook that much to result in me falling off!

Ah, now there is a story. My wee laddie shares a field with an ex racehorse. One day they decided to have a race (over half a mile) as horses do sometimes. Bobby the racehorse set off a gallop only to be out strided by the Clydie. The Clydie came in first a half length not just because he ran fast, but because he was so bloody big, he outpaced the rest of the boys! Shame it weren't the Grand National Kinclune Patrick Clydesdale weighing 1 ton would have in hall of fame LOL. I like your posts

Amy E quite often the best way to deal with a spooking horse is to trot away, especially on roads. It gives the horse less chance to look around for scary things and keeps their minds busy when they are actively working forward. So less likely to spook. The rider probably wanted to get out of the road as quickly as she could as well.

Very good outcome to a potentialy dangerous situation. Very good riders of both equine and motorcycle. Amazing what a bit of patience and understanding can do. When my horse had a major spook on a road I signalled to the on coming car to slow-down to which he replied with a cheery wave and gunned past me - I've no doubt he meant any malice - just lacked the ability to understand my signal or the odd behaviour of my horse.

My riding instructor taught me that, Also experience from horse training taught me that if I jumped off a horse who was panicking down a small lane they could kick me, or even trample me. I have worked with a lot of 'terror' horses which were abused, and working on the ground is what i do first, but when i am riding them i find talking to a spooked horse calms them (I talk to them during training whilst feeding them mints) so they tend to calm down hearing a voice. I've never been thrown.
